How gold is priced in Vietnam
Vietnam weighs gold in luong (tael) of 37.5 grams. Gold bullion is legally defined as gold stamped into bars, marked with weight and quality, and carrying the trademark of a company or commercial bank authorised by the State Bank of Vietnam. Jewellery must contain at least 8 karat (33.33%) of gold, and licensed importers may import only bars and raw gold of at least 99.5%. Today the bare international price works out to about 125,612,289 VND per luong of pure gold.
From a state monopoly to licences
From 2012, under Decree 24, the State held a monopoly on producing gold bars and on importing and exporting raw gold for them, so bar supply could not follow demand and domestic bars traded far above the world price; news reports have put the gap at more than 20 million dong per luong at times. Decree 232/2025, issued on 26 August 2025 and in force from 10 October 2025, ended that monopoly: bar production became a business that needs a State Bank licence, open to commercial banks and licensed companies. Before it was issued, the State Bank said it would grant raw-gold import quotas based on monetary policy and market conditions, and was studying a national gold exchange.
Cash rules and a tax on bar transfers
Since 16 October 2026 (Decree 390/2026), any gold purchase or sale of VND 5 million or more per customer per day must be paid without cash; the earlier limit was VND 20 million. The same decree freed jewellery making and trading from the conditional-business rules. Under the 2025 Personal Income Tax Law, a 0.1% tax is charged on each transfer of gold bars from 1 July 2026, with thresholds to exempt people who buy gold to save, to be set by the government.
The God of Wealth day
God of Wealth Day (vía Thần Tài), on the tenth day of the first lunar month, is traditionally linked to buying gold for luck; in 2026 it fell on 26 February, and Vietnam News reported queues at Hanoi jewellery shops, as in 2025, when many people queued overnight.
The dong and what moves the price
The State Bank of Vietnam sets a daily central rate for USD/VND, and since 17 October 2022 banks may trade within ±5% of it. So the converted price on this page mostly follows XAUUSD, while the domestic bar price also depends on supply rules and the premium. See what moves gold prices.
Rules for gold traders in Vietnam
Vietnam's gold decree defines account-based gold trading as trading in the form of margin trading, and says gold business activities other than those it lists need the Prime Minister's permission and a State Bank licence. In our reading, margin or account-based gold trading is not open to the public without that approval, and we found no such licence. Check the legal position before using any platform.

Trading hours in Indochina Time
The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 20:00–00:00 ICT. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Vietnam is on ICT (UTC+7) all year, so the overlap falls in the evening. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.
How this VND gold price is calculated
Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 25,585.35 VND. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.
- Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
- Price per gram in VND = $130.92 × 25,585.35 = 3,349,661 VND (24k, pure gold).
- Price per luong = 3,349,661 × 37.5 = 125,612,289 VND.
- For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 18k = 0.75, 14k = 0.585.
The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. If you want to do the maths yourself, our guide to converting the gold price per gram, tola and kilo walks through every step with worked examples.
What this price does not include
The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Vietnam, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:
- Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
- Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
- Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
- Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
- Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.
When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

Frequently asked questions
What is the gold rate today in Vietnam?
At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 3,349,661 VND per gram and 125,612,289 VND per luong, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. Vietnamese bar and ring prices are quoted by licensed gold businesses and banks, and can sit far above the converted world price.
What is the difference between 18k and 24k gold?
Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750); 14k is 58.5% gold (fineness 585). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 18k is worth 25.0% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. In Vietnam gold bullion must carry the trademark of a firm or bank authorised by the State Bank, and jewellery must contain at least 8 karat of gold.
Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?
This page shows the international spot price converted into VND, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds the domestic premium, a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.
Is it a good time to buy gold in Vietnam?
We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the VND exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.
Why is gold in Vietnam more expensive than the world price?
Because supply of gold bars was tightly controlled. Under Decree 24 of 2012 the State held a monopoly on producing gold bars and on importing raw gold for them, so domestic bars traded far above the converted world price. Decree 232/2025 ended the monopoly from 10 October 2025 and moved bar production to State Bank licences.
Can I pay cash for gold in Vietnam?
Only for small amounts. Since 16 October 2026 (Decree 390/2026), gold purchases or sales of VND 5 million or more per customer per day must be paid without cash, through accounts; the earlier limit was VND 20 million.
