Guyana Gold Board prices: per ounce and per pennyweight

Guyana's gold trade uses an old unit, the pennyweight (dwt): one-twentieth of a troy ounce, or 1.555 grams. The Guyana Gold Board publishes a morning and an afternoon price each day, per troy ounce and per pennyweight, for gold quoted at 94% purity; in 2018 it said it buys at the London price rather than setting its own. The figures on this page are for pure gold: today about 42,730 GYD per pennyweight. To compare with a Gold Board price, multiply by 0.94.

    A big gold producer

Gold is one of Guyana's main exports. According to official figures reported by Kaieteur News in February 2026, 484,321 ounces of gold were declared in 2025, 50,254 ounces more than in 2024: the Guyana Gold Board took 195,432 ounces (up 45.6%), the large-scale producer 167,005 ounces and licensed dealers 121,883 ounces.

VAT: raw gold exempt, local jewellery zero-rated

Guyana's VAT rates are 14% and 0%. Locally mined raw gold is an exempt supply, and since 16 February 2026 locally produced jewellery is zero-rated, so no VAT is charged on it. Customs duty ranges from 5% to 150% depending on the product; we could not confirm the rate on imported jewellery, so ask how a piece is invoiced.

What moves the Guyana dollar gold price

The Bank of Guyana's statistics show about G$208.50 per US dollar, and the bank injects US dollars when the market runs short, so the local gold price moves almost one for one with the dollar gold price. See what moves gold prices.

    Trading hours in Guyana time

The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 09:00–13:00 Guyana time. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Guyana is on UTC-4 all year, so the overlap falls in the morning and around midday. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.

How this GYD gold price is calculated

Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 209.87 GYD. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.

    1. Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
    2. Price per gram in GYD = $130.92 × 209.87 = 27,476 GYD (24k, pure gold).
    3. Price per pennyweight = 27,476 × 1.55517 = 42,730 GYD.
    4. For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 22k = 0.9167, 18k = 0.75, 14k = 0.585.

The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. If you want to do the maths yourself, our guide to converting the gold price per gram, tola and kilo walks through every step with worked examples.

What this price does not include

The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Guyana, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:

    • Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
    • Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
    • Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
    • Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
    • Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.

When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate today in Guyana?

At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 27,476 GYD per gram and 42,730 GYD per pennyweight, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. In Guyana the reference is the Guyana Gold Board’s morning and afternoon price per troy ounce and per pennyweight, quoted for 94%-pure gold.

What is the difference between 22k and 24k gold?

Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 22k is 91.67% gold (fineness 916); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750); 14k is 58.5% gold (fineness 585). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 22k is worth 8.3% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. Guyana Gold Board prices are quoted for gold of 94% purity, so scale the pure-gold figures on this page by 0.94 to compare.

Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?

This page shows the international spot price converted into GYD, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds VAT where it applies (locally made jewellery is zero-rated), a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.

Is it a good time to buy gold in Guyana?

We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the GYD exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.

What is a pennyweight of gold?

A pennyweight (dwt) is one-twentieth of a troy ounce, 1.555 grams. Guyana Gold Board prices are quoted per troy ounce and per pennyweight for gold of 94% purity, so multiply this page’s pure-gold pennyweight figure by 0.94 to compare.

Is there VAT on gold jewellery in Guyana?

Not on locally produced jewellery: it has been zero-rated since 16 February 2026, and locally mined raw gold is exempt. The standard VAT rate is 14%, so ask how imported jewellery is treated before you buy.
