FOMC Day Gold Playbook: A Minute-by-Minute Plan for XAUUSD Traders

The Fed decision is the one scheduled event that can move gold twice in thirty minutes: once on the statement and again in the press conference. This playbook turns FOMC day into a written plan: the times in your zone, what gold typically does at each stage, a pre-event checklist, what to do in the release minute and how to review it afterwards.

The short answer

On FOMC day, gold usually drifts quietly into the decision, spikes on the statement at 2:00 pm New York time, can reverse during the press conference at 2:30 pm, and finds its real direction later in the evening or the next session. The surprise against expectations decides the direction; the press conference often decides whether it lasts.

The playbook below has four parts: know the times, prepare before, decide in advance what you do in the release window, and review after. It is the event-day version of the routine in how to trade gold on Fed day; read that for the background on the Fed and gold.

What the FOMC release is

The Federal Open Market Committee sets the US policy interest rate eight times a year. On decision day it publishes:

  • The statement (2:00 pm New York): the rate decision and the committee’s wording on inflation, jobs and the outlook
  • The press conference (2:30 pm New York): the Fed Chair’s answers to questions, often the bigger market mover
  • The Summary of Economic Projections, including the “dot plot”, at four of the eight meetings

Gold pays no interest, so it is sensitive to expectations for US interest rates, real yields and the dollar. The gold vs real yields and the dollar tracker shows those drivers against the price.

Release times in your zone

US summer time Mismatch weeks (US summer, UK winter) US winter time
New York 14:00 14:00 14:00

London 19:00 18:00 19:00
India (IST) 23:30 23:30 00:30 next day

Add 30 minutes to each time for the press conference. The mismatch weeks happen because the UK and US change clocks on different dates; 28 October 2026 is one of them.

How XAUUSD typically behaves, stage by stage

These are mechanics that repeat often enough to plan around. They are not rules, and any FOMC day can break the pattern.

Before: the blackout and the wait

Fed officials stop giving public comment during the blackout period before each meeting, so there is less new information. On the day itself, many traders cut positions before the announcement. The result is often thinning liquidity and narrowing ranges through the London session and into the New York morning. Breakouts in this window frequently fail because few participants want to commit before the decision.

What the market expects is visible in advance: rate-futures pricing, summarised by tools such as CME FedWatch, shows the probability of each outcome.

At 2:00 pm: the statement

In the seconds around the release:

  • Spreads widen, sometimes sharply, as liquidity providers pull quotes.
  • The first move is fast and can cover a large part of a normal day’s range in a few minutes.
  • Stops get filled at worse prices than their level when price gaps through them.

The direction of the first move reflects how the decision and statement compare with what was priced. If the decision was fully expected, the first move is often small and driven by changes in wording.

At 2:30 pm: the press conference

The press conference can confirm the first move or reverse it. A statement read as hawkish can be softened by the Chair’s answers, and the reverse. This is why many experienced traders treat the first spike as information, not an entry: the first-move fade is common enough that it is worth having a plan for, but it is not reliable enough to trade blindly.

After: the real direction

Once the press conference ends, spreads normalise and the market digests the message. Gold often sets its post-Fed direction in the hours that follow and into the next Asian and London sessions, when the move either extends or retraces. Weekly levels from the gold forecast are least reliable around this time, because price can pass through several levels in minutes.

The FOMC day plan

Pre-event checklist (the day before and the morning)

  • [ ] Confirm the date and time on the Federal Reserve calendar and convert it to your time zone.
  • [ ] Note whether this is a projections meeting (dot plot).
  • [ ] Check what is priced: probability of a hold, cut or hike.
  • [ ] Mark the day’s key levels: the prior day’s high and low, the weekly pivot and the statistical range from the weekly forecast, and nearby round numbers.
  • [ ] Check today’s normal range on the gold volatility tracker.
  • [ ] Decide which of three plans you will follow (below) and write it down before London opens.
  • [ ] Decide what happens to any open position before 2:00 pm New York.

Choose one plan in advance

Plan What you do Best for
A. Stand aside No new trades from 1:30 pm New York until the press conference ends. Review the reaction instead. Beginners, small accounts, anyone without a tested event plan
B. Trade the settled reaction Wait until after the press conference. Trade only a clear retest of a level that held, with a stop sized for the wider range. Intraday traders with a written retest setup
C. Hold through, small Keep a swing position through the event at reduced size, with a stop you accept may be filled worse. Swing traders whose thesis is about the Fed outcome itself

There is no “trade the spike” option in this playbook. Entering in the first seconds means trading the widest spreads and the least reliable price of the day.

During (1:30 pm to 3:30 pm New York)

  1. From 1:30 pm: no new entries. Spreads may already be widening.
  2. 2:00 pm: read the statement headline and the rate decision. Note the first move and its size against the day’s range. Do nothing.
  3. 2:30 pm: watch the press conference. Note whether the first move extends or reverses.
  4. After the press conference: if you are on Plan B, look for your retest at a pre-marked level, with the stop beyond the post-release extreme and size reduced to fit that wider stop.

After (that evening and the next day)

  • Write a short review: what was expected, what the Fed did, the first move, the press-conference move and the close.
  • Compare it with your plan: did you follow it?
  • Note what the reaction did to your weekly levels.

Common FOMC-day mistakes

  • Treating the decision as the news. When the rate decision is fully priced, the market moves on the wording, the projections and the press conference, not on the decision itself.
  • Trading the statement spike and getting reversed at 2:30 pm. The press conference is half the event.
  • Leaving a tight stop on an old position through the release, then being filled far beyond it.
  • Reading the first hour as the verdict. The post-Fed direction is often clearer the next morning than it is at 3:00 pm New York.
  • Skipping the review because you did not trade. The review of a day you stood aside is where the next plan comes from.

Risk rules for FOMC day

  • Size from the stop, not the account. If the stop has to be wider than usual, the position must be smaller. Use the position size calculator.
  • Assume slippage. A stop near the release can be filled well beyond its level.
  • One attempt. If your post-release trade is stopped out, the day is done.
  • No averaging down into a fast move.
  • Respect the time zone. In US winter the decision lands after midnight in India; do not trade it tired.

FOMC day is one of the most volatile days in the gold calendar. Spreads widen, prices can gap through stops, and leveraged positions can lose more than planned. Standing aside is a valid plan.

Work through it live in the community

FOMC day is easier with a room. Inside the XAUUSD Global community, pods post their Fed-day plan at the New York stand-up, members on a 5-day streak unlock the Fed Day War Room, a vault that opens two hours before every Fed decision, and the reactions are reviewed together afterwards on screenshots, not links. No signals: everyone brings their own plan and reasoning.

Frequently asked questions

What time is the FOMC decision?

The FOMC statement is released at 2:00 pm New York time and the Fed Chair’s press conference starts at 2:30 pm. That is 18:00 UTC while the US is on daylight saving time and 19:00 UTC in winter; 23:30 IST in US summer and 00:30 IST the next day in US winter.

When is the next FOMC meeting?

On our calendar, the next decisions are on Wednesday 28 October 2026 at 18:00 UTC and Wednesday 9 December 2026 at 19:00 UTC, the December meeting including new economic projections. Always confirm on the Federal Reserve’s FOMC calendar the day before.

How does gold usually react to the Fed decision?

Gold reacts to the surprise, not the decision itself. A decision or message that is more hawkish than the market expected tends to lift yields and the dollar and weigh on gold; a more dovish surprise tends to do the opposite. The first move can reverse during the press conference, so many traders wait for it to settle.

Should I hold a gold trade through the FOMC announcement?

Only if the position is small enough that a fast move through your stop, at a worse fill than expected, is still an acceptable loss. Spreads widen and slippage is common in the release minute. Many traders close or reduce before 2:00 pm New York time.

Why does gold go quiet before the Fed?

Fed officials stop speaking publicly in the blackout period before each meeting, and many traders reduce positions ahead of the decision. Liquidity thins and ranges often tighten until the statement.

Is this playbook a trading signal?

No. It is an educational routine for preparing, executing and reviewing your own plan on FOMC day. It does not tell you which direction to trade.
