How gold is sold in Bahrain

Bahrain sells gold per gram in dinars. We found no official body that publishes a national daily retail rate; shops price from the international rate. Today the bare international price is about 49.226 BHD per gram of 24k gold, 45.126 BHD for 22k and 43.073 BHD for 21k.

Hallmarks and receipts: the ministry's rules

Hallmarking is compulsory. Selling or displaying unhallmarked jewellery is a violation, and all imported jewellery must be hallmarked by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. The approved gold karats are 24, 22, 21, 18 and 14 (916.6, 875, 750 and 585 parts per thousand below 24K). A seized piece that proves to be a legal karat is hallmarked; otherwise it is broken. Moving or altering a hallmark is an offence.

A jewellery receipt must show the shop's name and registration number, the buyer's name, the date, a description, the karat and the total metal weight, with diamonds listed separately.

    Pearls: a Bahraini rule

Bahrain's jewellery tradition is built on pearls, and the rules still protect it: selling or displaying jewellery set with cultured pearls is a violation, displaying uncertified pearls is illegal, and a pearl receipt must give the pearls' weight separately from the metal. The year's big jewellery event is Jewellery Arabia, held every November at Exhibition World Bahrain in Sakhir; the 2026 edition runs from 24 to 28 November.

    VAT and customs duty

Bahrain has charged VAT since 1 January 2019, and the standard rate is now 10% (PwC, July 2026). We could not re-check how investment-grade bars are treated, so ask the dealer how a bar is invoiced. Imports generally pay 5% customs duty on their value, and jewellery trade guides list the same 5% for gems and jewellery. None of this is included on this page.

What moves the dinar gold price

The Central Bank of Bahrain maintains the dinar at 0.376 per US dollar, a peg it says has been effectively unchanged since 1980, and it buys and sells dollars near that rate with retail banks. So the dinar gold price follows XAUUSD one for one. Read what moves gold prices for the global drivers.

Trading hours in Arabia Standard Time

The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 16:00–20:00 AST. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Bahrain is on AST (UTC+3) all year, so the overlap falls in the late afternoon and evening. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.

How this BHD gold price is calculated

Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 0.3760 BHD. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.

    1. Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
    2. Price per gram in BHD = $130.92 × 0.3760 = 49.23 BHD (24k, pure gold).
    3. Price per 10 grams = 49.23 × 10 = 492.26 BHD.
    4. For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 22k = 0.9167, 21k = 0.875, 18k = 0.75, 14k = 0.585.

The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. What this price does not include

The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Bahrain, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:

    • Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
    • Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
    • Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
    • Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
    • Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.

When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate today in Bahrain?

At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 49.23 BHD per gram and 492.26 BHD per 10 grams, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. We found no official daily gold rate in Bahrain; shops price from the international rate, which the dinar’s dollar peg passes straight through, and add 10% VAT and a making charge.

What is the difference between 22k and 24k gold?

Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 22k is 91.67% gold (fineness 916); 21k is 87.5% gold (fineness 875); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750); 14k is 58.5% gold (fineness 585). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 22k is worth 8.3% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. Bahrain’s approved gold karats are 24, 22, 21, 18 and 14, and all jewellery, imports included, is hallmarked by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.

Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?

This page shows the international spot price converted into BHD, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds 10% VAT, a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.

Is it a good time to buy gold in Bahrain?

We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the BHD exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.

Is gold jewellery hallmarked in Bahrain?

Yes. Hallmarking is compulsory, imported jewellery included, and it is done by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. The approved gold karats are 24, 22, 21, 18 and 14, and selling or displaying unhallmarked jewellery is a violation.

Can jewellery with cultured pearls be sold in Bahrain?

No. Under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce’s rules, selling or displaying jewellery set with cultured pearls is a violation, uncertified pearls may not be displayed, and pearl receipts must show the pearls’ weight separately from the metal.
