The short answer
Indian residents can trade gold, but not in the way most global XAUUSD content suggests.
- Trading forex or CFDs, including XAUUSD, on overseas online platforms is generally not permitted for residents under FEMA.
- Legal routes include MCX gold futures, gold ETFs, gold mutual funds, existing sovereign gold bonds and physical gold.
| Route | Regulated by | Leverage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| MCX gold futures and options | SEBI | Yes, exchange margin | Priced in rupees |
| Gold ETFs | SEBI | No | Bought on NSE or BSE via a demat account |
| Gold mutual funds | SEBI | No | Usually invest in gold ETFs |
| Sovereign gold bonds | RBI (issued for the government) | No | New issuance status: check RBI |
| Physical gold | Hallmarking by BIS | No | Making charges and GST apply |
| Digital gold apps | Generally outside SEBI | No | Fewer protections |
| Overseas XAUUSD CFDs | Not permitted for residents | (High) | Generally violates FEMA |

Why overseas XAUUSD platforms are a problem for residents
Under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 (FEMA), residents can only deal in forex through authorized persons and for permitted purposes. The RBI has issued public cautions explaining that:
- Forex trading by residents is permitted only with authorized persons and on recognized Indian exchanges, in permitted currency pairs.
- Remitting money abroad, directly or indirectly, for margin trading on overseas forex platforms is not permitted under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS).
- Residents who trade on unauthorized platforms may face penal action under FEMA.
Overseas XAUUSD CFDs fall into this category for most residents, even when the broker is regulated in another country. Payment through UPI, cards or local agents doesn’t change the rule.
This is a simplified summary. Read the RBI’s latest press releases and FAQs on the RBI website for the current position, and speak to a qualified professional if you’re unsure.
Ads saying “SEBI approved forex broker” or “RBI registered XAUUSD platform” for overseas brokers are a big red flag. Check the claims directly on the RBI and SEBI websites.

The RBI Alert List
The RBI publishes an Alert List of entities that are not authorized to deal in forex or operate electronic trading platforms for forex. Search the RBI website for “Alert List” to find the latest version.
- It’s updated from time to time.
- It isn’t exhaustive. A platform that’s not on the list isn’t automatically authorized.
How to verify an Indian broker
- Get the broker’s SEBI registration number from its website.
- Search it on the SEBI website under registered intermediaries.
- Check the broker is a member of MCX (for commodity futures) and NSE or BSE (for ETFs) using the exchanges’ member search.
- Check the website and contact details match the official records.
- Never pay margin into a personal bank account or a UPI ID that doesn’t belong to the registered broker.
Legal route 1: MCX gold futures
MCX lists several gold futures contracts, from large 1 kg contracts down to smaller ones such as Gold Mini, Gold Guinea and Gold Petal. Options on gold futures are also available. Check the MCX website for current contract sizes, quotation units and margins.
How MCX gold differs from XAUUSD:
- Priced in rupees, usually per 10 grams for the main contracts.
- The price reflects international gold, the USD/INR rate, and Indian import duties and taxes.
- Margins are set by the exchange and SEBI rules, not as a fixed leverage ratio.
- Contracts expire and may involve delivery rules. Learn these before expiry week.
Trading hours
MCX trades non-agricultural commodities such as gold from 9:00 am to about 11:30 pm IST, extended to about 11:55 pm when the US is on winter time. That covers the Asian, London and New York sessions. Confirm current timings and holidays on MCX.
Legal route 2: gold ETFs and funds
Gold ETFs trade on NSE and BSE like shares, and generally hold physical gold. Gold mutual funds usually invest in gold ETFs and don’t need a demat account. Compare the expense ratio and tracking error.
Legal route 3: sovereign gold bonds
Sovereign gold bonds (SGBs) are issued by the RBI on behalf of the government and are linked to the gold price. New tranches haven’t been issued recently, and the scheme’s future is a government decision. Check the RBI website for current availability. Previously issued SGBs can still be bought and sold on stock exchanges, though trading volumes can be thin.
Physical and digital gold
Physical gold is central to Indian culture. Look for BIS hallmarking, compare making charges, and keep your invoice.
Digital gold offered through apps and websites is generally outside SEBI’s regulatory framework, and SEBI has cautioned investors about this. Before buying, check:
- Who holds the gold, and is it independently audited?
- What are the buy and sell spreads and storage fees?
- How can you sell or take delivery, and what happens if the platform shuts down?
A general note on tax
Gold products in India are taxed differently depending on the product and holding period, and the rules have changed several times in recent budgets. Physical gold also attracts GST, and import duties affect prices.
Tax rules change often. Check the Income Tax Department’s guidance and consult a chartered accountant or licensed tax adviser before investing or trading.
Best gold trading hours in IST
India uses Indian Standard Time (IST), UTC+5:30, with no daylight saving. London and New York change clocks, so gold’s busy hours shift by one hour in India twice a year.
| Event | IST winter (Nov–Mar) | IST summer (Mar–Oct) |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly open (spot) | Mon 04:30 | Mon 03:30 |
| MCX opens | 09:00 | 09:00 |
| London open (08:00 GMT winter / 07:00 GMT summer) | 13:30 | 12:30 |
| US data (8:30 am New York) | 19:00 | 18:00 |
| London–New York overlap | 18:30–22:30 | 17:30–21:30 |
| Fed decision (2:00 pm New York) | 00:30 (next day) | 23:30 |
| MCX closes | ~23:55 | ~23:30 |
During the mismatch weeks (October 25 to November 1, 2026, and mid to late March 2027), the London open is at 13:30 IST but US data comes at 18:00 IST.

Indian traders are well placed for both the London session in the afternoon and the New York session in the evening.
Position sizing in rupees
The XAUUSD lot formula used worldwide is:
Lots = Risk in $ ÷ (Stop distance in $ × 100)
For MCX, you size in rupees instead. First, translate a gold move in dollars per ounce into rupees per 10 grams.
Step 1: convert the move (hypothetical exchange rate)
- 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams
- A $10 move per ounce = $10 × (10 ÷ 31.1035) = about $3.22 per 10 g
- At a hypothetical USD/INR = 88, that’s about ₹283 per 10 g
Step 2: value per contract
For a contract quoted per 10 g, profit or loss = price move per 10 g × (contract grams ÷ 10). For a 100 g contract:
- ₹283 × 10 = about ₹2,830 for a $10 gold move
Step 3: size it
- Account: ₹500,000
- Risk per trade: 1% = ₹5,000
- Stop: equivalent to a $10 gold move, about ₹2,830 per 100 g contract
- Contracts = ₹5,000 ÷ ₹2,830 = 1.77, round down to 1 contract
The 88 rate is hypothetical, and MCX prices also move with the rupee. Always check the current contract size, quotation unit and margin on MCX before calculating.

Gold in Indian culture
India is one of the world’s largest consumers of gold. Demand traditionally rises around Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras and Diwali, and the wedding season. Gold jewelry is a long-standing store of family wealth. Government policies on import duties affect domestic prices and the gap between MCX and international gold. The gold seasonality tool helps you study recurring patterns.
Which legal route fits you?
| If you… | Consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Want to trade short-term gold moves | MCX gold futures (smaller contracts) | Regulated, rupee-priced, long or short |
| Want long-term exposure without leverage | Gold ETFs or gold mutual funds | Simple to hold; no margin calls |
| Already hold SGBs | Keep or sell on exchange | Check the bond’s terms and current status |
| Want jewelry or coins for family use | BIS-hallmarked physical gold | Making charges reduce investment value |
A practical tip: if you follow XAUUSD charts for analysis, compare them with the MCX chart. Moves in USD/INR can make MCX gold rise or fall even when XAUUSD is flat.
Scams and red flags in India
Indian traders are heavily targeted. Watch for:
- Overseas forex and XAUUSD apps advertised on Instagram, YouTube and Telegram, especially those on the RBI Alert List.
- Fake “SEBI registered” or “RBI approved” claims for foreign platforms.
- Deposits via UPI to personal accounts or “payment agents”.
- Telegram and WhatsApp signal groups promising fixed daily returns.
- “Account handling” or profit-sharing offers where someone trades your money.
- Fake prop firm challenges and courses that push a specific overseas broker. Read our prop firm gold trading guide.
- Withdrawal fees or “taxes” demanded before you can withdraw.
Trading gold futures with leverage carries a high risk of loss, and gold can move sharply on US data and Fed decisions late in the Indian evening. Overseas platforms add legal risk and leave you with no Indian regulatory protection. Only trade money you can afford to lose.

What is the RBI Alert List?
The RBI Alert List is a public list of entities that the Reserve Bank of India says are not authorized to deal in forex or operate electronic trading platforms for forex transactions. Are sovereign gold bonds still available?
New tranches of sovereign gold bonds have not been issued recently, and the scheme’s future is decided by the government. Previously issued bonds can still be bought and sold on stock exchanges. Check the RBI website for the current status.
Is digital gold regulated by SEBI?
