The short answer
Most MT5 login problems come from five causes. Check them in this order:
- Wrong server. Your broker has several servers (for example a “Demo” and a “Live” one). The login only works on the server where the account was opened.
- Wrong login or password. The login is the account number, not your email. Passwords are case-sensitive.
- Investor password instead of master password. You can log in but can’t trade.
- The account no longer exists or is disabled, for example an old demo, or an MT4 account typed into MT5.
- Your connection. Internet, Wi-Fi, a firewall or a VPN.
The fixes for each are below. If you’re getting trade errors after logging in (“invalid volume”, “market closed”), see MT5 gold errors explained and the full MT4 and MT5 error codes list.
First, read the message in the right place
- Bottom-right corner (PC): MetaQuotes’ help says the status bar shows “server connection indication”. “No connection” or “Invalid account” appears here.
- Journal tab (PC): open the Toolbox (Ctrl+T) → Journal. MetaQuotes’ help says this tab holds the platform’s log of “the platform start and all events during its operation”. The login error line here usually names the problem.
- Phone: MetaQuotes’ Android help says the connection status is in the side panel: “A rotating indication next to an account number means the app is not connected to the server.”
Take a screenshot of the message. If you need your broker’s help, it saves a lot of back and forth.
Fix 1: “Invalid account”
As broker help pages commonly describe it, this means the platform reached a server, but your details didn’t match an account on it.
- Check the server name in your broker’s welcome email or client area. Match it exactly, including words like “Demo”, “Live” or a number at the end.
- On PC, go to File → Login to Trade Account. MetaQuotes’ help lists three fields: Login (“the account number”), Password (“the master or investor password”) and Server. Fill them again, carefully.
- Retype the password instead of pasting it. Pasting often adds a hidden space.
- Is it an MT4 account? MT4 and MT5 accounts are separate. An MT4 login won’t work in MT5.
- Is it an old demo? Demo accounts live on the broker’s server, and a broker can remove them. Open a new demo: see our demo account guide.
- Was the password changed? MetaQuotes’ help notes that brokers may ask you to change the master password, and that a forced master password change makes the investor password invalid too. Use the newest password.
- Still failing? Use your broker’s client area to reset the trading password, or contact the broker. On the Android app, MetaQuotes’ help says tapping “Forgot your password?” below the login form opens your broker’s contact details.
Fix 2: “No connection”
The platform can’t reach the server at all.
- Check your internet. Open any website. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data on a phone.
- Turn off a VPN or proxy for a moment and try again. Some networks (office or college Wi-Fi) block trading ports.
- Check the server name again. A typo here looks like “no connection”, because the platform can’t find the server.
- Reconnect: File → Login to Trade Account, then OK. Many broker help pages also suggest clicking the connection indicator in the bottom-right corner and choosing Rescan servers, which looks for a working access point.
- Is it the weekend? You can usually still log in, but you can’t trade. See why can’t I trade gold right now?.
- Update MT5. Very old builds can fail to connect.
- If other accounts connect but this one doesn’t, the server may be down or your account disabled. Contact your broker.
Fix 3: wrong server, or can’t find the server
When you add an account, MT5 asks you to choose a server.
- PC: MetaQuotes’ help says that if your company isn’t in the list, “type its name and click ‘Find your broker’”. You can also type the server address instead of the name.
- Android: MetaQuotes’ help says search results appear “after you type three characters”, and “You may contact your broker to find out the appropriate server name.”
Type the broker’s exact legal or brand name. Choose the server that matches your account email exactly. Many login problems are a “Demo” account typed into the “Live” server, or the other way round.
If someone sends you a server name and a login for an account you didn’t open yourself, be very careful. Logging in to an unknown server is how many fake-broker scams work. See fake MT4 and MT5 apps and clone firms.
Fix 4: logged in, but can’t trade
You see prices and your balance, but the order buttons don’t work, or every order fails.
- Investor password. MetaQuotes’ help says the investor password lets you “view account status, analyze prices” and use your own Expert Advisors, but not trade. Log in again with the master password.
- Gold is hidden. See how to add gold to MT4 and MT5.
- Market is closed or trading is disabled. See MT5 gold errors.
- One-click trading is off (that’s a setting, not an error): see one-click trading in MT5.
Fix 5: “common error” and other vague messages on the phone
Some versions of the MT5 app show a short message like “common error” without saying why. MetaQuotes’ help pages that we checked don’t explain this message. So treat it as “something in the login failed” and run the same checks:
- Internet on, VPN off.
- Server name exact.
- Account number, not email.
- Password retyped.
- Account still active (log in to your broker’s client area).
- App updated from the official store.
- Try the same login on PC. If it works there, reinstall the phone app from the official store.
The 2-minute checklist
- ☐ Server name matches my broker’s email exactly (Demo vs Live)
- ☐ Login = account number, not my email
- ☐ Password retyped, not pasted; master password if I want to trade
- ☐ It’s an MT5 account, not MT4
- ☐ Account still active (checked in the broker’s client area)
- ☐ Internet works; VPN off
- ☐ MT5 updated from metatrader5.com or the official store
- ☐ Screenshot of the Journal message ready for support
Keep your login safe
- Never share your master password. If someone needs to see your account, the investor password is read-only by design.
- Turn on extra security if your broker offers it. MetaQuotes’ help describes one-time passwords (OTP) and certificate-based extended authentication.
- Don’t install MT5 from a link in a chat. Use metatrader5.com or the official store listing.

Frequently asked questions
What does 'Invalid account' mean in MT5?
The platform reached a server but the login details didn’t match an account on it. The usual causes are the wrong server, a mistyped login or password, a demo account that has been removed, or using a login from another broker or from MT4. Check the server name your broker gave you first.
Why does MT5 say 'No connection'?
The platform can’t reach the trade server. Check your internet, then the server name, then try reconnecting from File, Login to Trade Account. If other accounts connect but this one doesn’t, contact your broker.
Can I use my MT4 login in MT5?
Usually not. MT4 and MT5 accounts are separate, on separate servers. An MT4 account number will normally give an error in MT5. Ask your broker for an MT5 account if you want to use MT5.
Why can I log in but not trade?
You may have logged in with the investor (read-only) password. MetaQuotes’ help says the investor password lets you view the account but not trade. Log in again with the master (trading) password.
What is 'common error' in the MT5 app?
It’s a general message that doesn’t name the cause. MetaQuotes’ help pages don’t explain it, so work through the same checks: internet, server name, login and password, account still active, app updated. If it continues, send your broker a screenshot.
