How gold is priced in Mexico
Mexico prices bullion per troy ounce (onza) and per gram, in pesos. Today the bare international price works out to about 75,971 MXN per ounce and 2,443 MXN per gram of pure gold. Mexico's tax law treats gold in three groups, and the group decides whether you pay IVA (VAT): jewellery, coins that have been currency, and high-purity bars.
IVA: when gold is taxed and when it is not
Mexico's VAT law (Ley del IVA) has three rules for gold:
- 0% rate: gold, jewellery, goldsmiths' work, ornamental pieces and bars with at least 80% gold are zero-rated, but not when sold at retail to the general public (article 2-A). The IVA regulation (article 10) says the goods must be at least 10 karat for this rule.
- Exempt coins: gold or silver pieces that have been currency, such as the Centenario, and "onza troy" pieces are exempt from IVA (article 9, fraction VI).
- Exempt bars: gold bars of at least 99% gold are exempt when sold at retail to the general public (article 9, fraction VIII).
So at a shop, gold jewellery carries IVA at the standard rate, while gold coins that have been currency, onzas and 99% bars do not. We read the law in an unofficial transcription because the official text could not be reached, so ask the dealer how a price is invoiced.
What moves the peso gold price
The peso price of gold is the dollar price times USD/MXN. When the peso weakens, gold in pesos rises even if the dollar price is flat; when it strengthens, local gains shrink. This page shows the dollar price and the exchange rate separately. See what moves gold prices.

Trading hours in Mexico City time
The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 07:00–11:00 Mexico City time. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Mexico City does not change its clocks for summer, so the overlap, which falls in the morning, moves by an hour when London and New York change theirs. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.
How this MXN gold price is calculated
Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 18.657 MXN. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.
- Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
- Price per gram in MXN = $130.92 × 18.657 = 2,443 MXN (24k, pure gold).
- Price per troy ounce = 2,443 × 31.1035 = 75,971 MXN.
- For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 18k = 0.75, 14k = 0.585, 10k = 0.417.
The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. What this price does not include
The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Mexico, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:
- Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
- Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
- Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
- Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
- Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.
When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

Frequently asked questions
What is the gold rate today in Mexico?
At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 2,443 MXN per gram and 75,971 MXN per troy ounce, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. Mexican dealers price coins and bars from the international price in pesos; gold coins that have been currency and 99% bars carry no IVA, while shop jewellery does.
What is the difference between 18k and 24k gold?
Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750); 14k is 58.5% gold (fineness 585); 10k is 41.7% gold (fineness 417). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 18k is worth 25.0% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. For Mexico’s 0% IVA rule on gold goods, the pieces must be at least 10 karat (IVA regulation, article 10).
Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?
This page shows the international spot price converted into MXN, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds IVA on jewellery sold at retail (gold coins and 99% bars are exempt), a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.
Is it a good time to buy gold in Mexico?
We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the MXN exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.
Is IVA charged on gold jewellery in Mexico?
Yes, when it is sold at retail to the public. Mexico’s VAT law zero-rates gold and jewellery of at least 80% gold only when they are not sold at retail to the general public (article 2-A), so a shop sale of jewellery carries IVA at the standard rate. The price on this page includes no tax.
Are gold coins and bars IVA-free in Mexico?
Gold pieces that have been currency, such as the Centenario, and onza troy pieces are exempt from IVA (article 9, fraction VI), and gold bars of at least 99% gold are exempt when sold at retail to the public (article 9, fraction VIII). Dealers still add a premium over the gold value.
