Hallmarks in Poland
Hallmarking is compulsory in Poland, except for gold items under 1 gram. Testing and marking are done by the state assay offices under the President of the Central Office of Measures (GUM), including the regional offices in Warsaw and Kraków, and the hallmark's letter shows the office (W for Warsaw, K for Kraków, G for Gdańsk). Sellers must display the hallmark designs where customers can see them. The Hallmarking Convention's profile of Poland lists the legal gold standards as 999, 960, 750, 585, 500 and 375. Jewellers' guides also list 333, which is not on that official list.
Today the bare international price works out to about 16,031 PLN per ounce, 515.42 PLN per gram of pure gold and 301.52 PLN per gram of 585 gold.
VAT and income tax on gold
Under articles 121 and 122 of the Polish VAT Act, which follow the EU VAT Directive, investment gold is exempt from VAT: bars or wafers of at least 995 fineness, and gold coins of at least 900 fineness, minted after 1800, that are or were legal tender and normally sell for no more than 80% above their gold value (coins on the EU's yearly list qualify automatically). Jewellery is not investment gold and pays the standard 23% VAT.
For income tax, an individual who sells gold bars or coins more than six months after buying them, counted from the end of the month of purchase, has no taxable income; an earlier sale is taxed on the gain. A private sale may also attract the civil-law transactions tax, with sales up to 1,000 zł exempt. The Polish Mint sells investment bars and coins.
What moves the zloty gold price
The zloty price is the dollar price of gold times USD/PLN. When the zloty weakens, the zloty gold price rises faster than the dollar price, and the reverse is also true. This page shows both numbers. See what moves gold prices.
Rules for gold traders in Poland
Poland's financial regulator, the KNF, has permanent rules for CFDs offered to retail clients, in force since 2 August 2019. They apply to every CFD provider in Poland, including firms working cross-border, and require leverage limits for each type of underlying, automatic margin close-out, negative-balance protection, risk warnings and no bonuses. Poland also allows an "experienced client" status: a retail client who asks in writing and passes a trading-experience test and a knowledge test may get an initial margin as low as 1% (about 100:1) on currencies, major indices and gold.
Our country guides explain how to check a firm before you open an account.
Trading hours in Central European Time
The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 14:00–18:00 CET/CEST. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Poland is on CET (UTC+1), and CEST (UTC+2) in summer, so the overlap falls in the afternoon. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.
How this PLN gold price is calculated
Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 3.9369 PLN. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.
- Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
- Price per gram in PLN = $130.92 × 3.9369 = 515.42 PLN (24k, pure gold).
- Price per troy ounce = 515.42 × 31.1035 = 16,031.25 PLN.
- For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 18k = 0.75, 14k = 0.585, 9k = 0.375.
The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. If you want to do the maths yourself, our guide to converting the gold price per gram, tola and kilo walks through every step with worked examples.
What this price does not include
The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Poland, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:
- Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
- Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
- Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
- Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
- Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.
When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

Frequently asked questions
What is the gold rate today in Poland?
At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 515.42 PLN per gram and 16,031.25 PLN per troy ounce, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. Polish dealers and the Polish Mint price investment gold from the international price in zloty, with no VAT on investment gold.
What is the difference between 18k and 24k gold?
Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750); 14k is 58.5% gold (fineness 585); 9k is 37.5% gold (fineness 375). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 18k is worth 25.0% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. Hallmarking is compulsory in Poland for gold items of 1 gram or more, and the official list of gold standards is 999, 960, 750, 585, 500 and 375.
Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?
This page shows the international spot price converted into PLN, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds 23% VAT on jewellery, a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.
Is it a good time to buy gold in Poland?
We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the PLN exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.
Is there VAT on gold in Poland?
Not on investment gold (VAT Act articles 121 and 122): bars or wafers of at least 995 fineness, and gold coins of at least 900 fineness minted after 1800 that are or were legal tender and sell for no more than 80% above their gold value. Jewellery pays the standard 23% VAT. The price on this page does not include VAT.
Do I pay income tax when I sell gold in Poland?
Not if you sell more than six months after buying, counted from the end of the month of purchase: under the PIT Act that sale gives no taxable income, and a tax interpretation confirms this covers investment gold bars. A sale within six months is taxed on the gain.
