    Hallmarking is compulsory

Mauritius has compulsory hallmarking. The Assay Office in Port Louis, under the Ministry of Industry and the Jewellery Act, tests and marks jewellery, registers dealers, and regulates the buying of second-hand and trade-in jewellery. The legal gold standards are 999, 916, 835, 750, 585 and 375, and pieces under 1 gram are exempt. Pay for the gold content the stamp shows, not for a karat someone tells you.

Today the bare international price works out to about 6,152 MUR per gram of 24k gold and 5,639 MUR per gram of 22k (916).

15% VAT on new jewellery, and the trade-in rule

According to the Mauritius Revenue Authority, new jewellery carries the standard 15% VAT. When you trade in old jewellery for a new piece, VAT is charged on the new piece's value minus the old jewellery used (only the weight actually used counts). If you bring a gold bar to be made into jewellery, VAT is charged on the full price of the new piece and the bar's agreed value is then taken off what you pay.

Some gold is VAT-exempt: unwrought and semi-manufactured gold, gold powder, waste and scrap, gold compounds, and the minted gold bars imported, bought or sold by the Bank of Mauritius. Exported jewellery is zero-rated.

Gold from the Bank of Mauritius

Since November 2012 the Bank of Mauritius has sold 999.9 gold bars of 10, 50 and 100 grams to the public, with a buy-back facility, and it also sells 22-carat Dodo gold coins priced from the world gold price, not their face value.

What moves the rupee gold price

The Bank of Mauritius describes the rupee as a managed float with no pre-announced target: the market sets the rate and the bank steps in to smooth sharp moves. A weaker rupee raises the local gold price even on a day when gold is flat in dollars. See what moves gold prices.

    Trading hours in Mauritius time

The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 17:00–21:00 Mauritius time. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Mauritius is on UTC+4 all year, so the overlap falls in the late afternoon and evening. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.

How this MUR gold price is calculated

Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 46.990 MUR. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.

    1. Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
    2. Price per gram in MUR = $130.92 × 46.990 = 6,152 MUR (24k, pure gold).
    3. Price per 10 grams = 6,152 × 10 = 61,519 MUR.
    4. For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 22k = 0.9167, 18k = 0.75, 14k = 0.585, 9k = 0.375.

The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. If you want to do the maths yourself, our guide to converting the gold price per gram, tola and kilo walks through every step with worked examples.

What this price does not include

The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Mauritius, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:

    • Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
    • Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
    • Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
    • Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
    • Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.

When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate today in Mauritius?

At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 6,152 MUR per gram and 61,519 MUR per 10 grams, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. Mauritian jewellers price from the international price; the Bank of Mauritius also sells minted gold bars and Dodo coins priced from the world gold price.

What is the difference between 22k and 24k gold?

Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 22k is 91.67% gold (fineness 916); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750); 14k is 58.5% gold (fineness 585); 9k is 37.5% gold (fineness 375). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 22k is worth 8.3% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. Hallmarking is compulsory in Mauritius: the legal gold standards are 999, 916, 835, 750, 585 and 375, and pieces under 1 gram are exempt.

Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?

This page shows the international spot price converted into MUR, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds 15% VAT on new jewellery, a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.

Is it a good time to buy gold in Mauritius?

We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the MUR exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.

Is there VAT on gold in Mauritius?

On new jewellery, yes: 15%, according to the Mauritius Revenue Authority. Unwrought and semi-manufactured gold, gold scrap and the minted gold bars sold by the Bank of Mauritius are VAT-exempt, and exported jewellery is zero-rated. The price on this page includes no VAT.

How is VAT charged when I trade in old jewellery in Mauritius?

VAT is charged on the value of the new piece minus the value of the old jewellery you hand over (only the weight actually used counts). If you bring a gold bar instead, VAT is charged on the full price of the new piece and the bar’s value is deducted from what you pay.
