How gold is priced in Zambia
We found no published daily gold rate and no hallmarking authority for jewellery in Zambia; dealers price from the international price and the kwacha. Today the bare international price works out to about 2,661 ZMW per gram of 24k gold. Raw gold from small mines is often far from pure, so its value depends on its tested purity.
Royalty and VAT
Gold carries a 6% mineral royalty on the norm value of precious metals, in force since 1 June 2016, and VAT at the standard 16%; exports of goods are generally zero-rated. In September 2026 the mines ministry said it was examining a cut to the VAT that affects gold transactions. The 2027 Budget, presented on 6 November 2026, proposes cutting the royalty on gold that artisanal miners sell to approved aggregators from 6% to 3%, and raising VAT to 16.5%; both are proposals until passed. Small-scale miners with turnover up to ZMW 5 million pay a 4% turnover tax, less any royalty paid.
Bringing small-scale gold into the formal market
Zambia Gold Company, owned 51% by the state mining investor ZCCM-IH and 49% by the Ministry of Finance, buys gold from artisanal and small-scale miners, and in August 2025 the government put ZCCM-IH in charge of formalising the gold sector. Ministry of Mines figures show 2,237 kg of gold produced in 2023 and 3,142 kg in 2024, and ZCCM-IH's chief executive put 2025 output at about 127,000 ounces. Trade data suggest much more gold leaves the country: the UAE reported 29,140 kg of gold imports from Zambia in 2023, far above Zambia's own declared exports.
The Bank of Zambia buys gold
The Bank of Zambia signed a gold purchase agreement with Zambia Gold Company and the Kansanshi mine on 11 December 2020, and it buys gold locally in kwacha. It renewed the Kansanshi deal for three years in August 2025, and said it was finalising rules to let artisanal and small-scale miners sell to it. The bank calls gold a hedge against swings in the exchange rate and a way to spread its reserves.
What moves the kwacha gold price
The kwacha price is the dollar price of gold times USD/ZMW, so a weaker kwacha raises the local gold price even when gold is flat in dollars. This page shows both numbers. See what moves gold prices.

Trading hours in Central Africa Time
The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 15:00–19:00 CAT. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Zambia is on CAT (UTC+2) all year, so the overlap falls in the afternoon and early evening. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.
How this ZMW gold price is calculated
Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 20.325 ZMW. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.
- Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
- Price per gram in ZMW = $130.92 × 20.325 = 2,661 ZMW (24k, pure gold).
- Price per 10 grams = 2,661 × 10 = 26,609 ZMW.
- For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 22k = 0.9167, 18k = 0.75.
The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. If you want to do the maths yourself, our guide to converting the gold price per gram, tola and kilo walks through every step with worked examples.
What this price does not include
The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Zambia, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:
- Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
- Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
- Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
- Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
- Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.
When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

Frequently asked questions
What is the gold rate today in Zambia?
At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 2,661 ZMW per gram and 26,609 ZMW per 10 grams, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. We found no published daily gold rate in Zambia; dealers price from the international price and the kwacha, and add 16% VAT where it applies and their margin.
What is the difference between 22k and 24k gold?
Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 22k is 91.67% gold (fineness 916); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 22k is worth 8.3% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. We found no hallmarking authority for jewellery in Zambia, so ask for a test and a receipt that states the purity.
Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?
This page shows the international spot price converted into ZMW, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds 16% VAT where it applies, a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.
Is it a good time to buy gold in Zambia?
We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the ZMW exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.
Does the Bank of Zambia buy gold?
Yes. Since its December 2020 agreement with Zambia Gold Company and the Kansanshi mine, the Bank of Zambia has bought locally produced gold in kwacha for its reserves. It renewed the Kansanshi deal for three years in August 2025 and said it was preparing rules to buy from artisanal and small-scale miners too.
What taxes apply to gold in Zambia?
A 6% mineral royalty on precious metals (since 1 June 2016) and the standard 16% VAT on domestic sales, with exports generally zero-rated. The 2027 Budget (6 November 2026) proposes a 3% royalty for artisanal gold sold to approved aggregators and a 16.5% VAT rate; both still need to be passed.
