Gold price in Saudi Arabia: per gram, 24k, 22k, 21k and 18k

Saudi Arabia quotes gold per gram in riyals, with 21k and 18k the most common purities in jewellery, 22k popular with the South Asian community and 24k for bars and coins. The riyal is pegged to the US dollar at 3.75, so the SAR gold price is the world price in another unit, without a currency layer. Today's conversion gives 483.47 SAR per gram for 24k and 423.03 SAR for 21k; the rates posted in the gold markets of Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam are built on the same number plus local costs and tax.

15% VAT and making charges

The Kingdom raised VAT to 15% in July 2020, and it applies to gold jewellery, which makes the gap between the spot-based price on this page and the shop price larger than in neighbouring Dubai. How VAT is applied to high-purity investment bars follows separate rules, so ask the dealer. Making charges are quoted on top of the gram rate and depend on the design and the shop; they are the negotiable part of the bill. Because of the tax difference, many residents compare prices with the UAE before a large purchase, and travellers should know both countries' customs rules.

Weddings, Eid and the shift to saving

Gold in Saudi Arabia is traditionally bought for weddings, where the shabka (the groom's gift of jewellery) is a central custom, and for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. The long weekend of Thursday evening to Saturday is when the gold souks are busiest. Alongside jewellery, interest in 24k bars and coins as savings has grown, with banks and licensed dealers selling small bars. Gold also plays a role for the large expatriate workforce, who buy to send or carry home, which links Saudi demand to prices in South Asia and Egypt.

What moves the riyal gold price

With the peg in place, the SAR price follows XAUUSD exactly. The drivers are therefore global: US interest-rate expectations and real yields, the strength of the dollar against other currencies, official-sector buying, and Middle East geopolitics, which can lift gold quickly in moments of tension. Oil prices matter indirectly through the Saudi economy and budget rather than through the gold price itself. For the full picture, read what moves gold prices.

Trading hours in Arabia Standard Time

Saudi Arabia is on AST (UTC+3) all year. The London–New York overlap, the busiest window in the gold market, falls today at about 15:00–19:00 AST, which suits traders who are free in the evening. Note that the Saudi weekend is Friday and Saturday, while the international market closes on Friday evening New York time and reopens Monday morning in Asia, so Sunday is quiet. Onshore brokers are licensed by the Capital Market Authority; the Saudi gold trading guide explains what is permitted and how to check a licence. The market hours tool shows every session in your time.

How this SAR gold price is calculated

Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,010.0 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 3.7500 SAR. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.

  1. Price per gram in USD = $4,010.0 ÷ 31.1035 = $128.92.
  2. Price per gram in SAR = $128.92 × 3.7500 = 483.47 SAR (24k, pure gold).
  3. Price per 10 grams = 483.47 × 10 = 4,834.67 SAR.
  4. For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 22k = 0.9167, 21k = 0.875, 18k = 0.750.

The gold price comes from COMEX gold futures, which track spot XAUUSD closely but are not identical to it. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. What this price does not include

The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Saudi Arabia, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The retail or "jeweller" price adds some or all of these on top:

  • Import duty or customs charges, where the country imports most of its gold.
  • Sales tax, GST or VAT, which may apply to jewellery, to bars and coins, or to both, depending on local law.
  • Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
  • Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
  • Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.

When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

Education only. This page shows a converted international price for learning and comparison. It is not a quote, not a recommendation to buy or sell, and not financial advice. Prices change constantly and your local dealer's rate will differ.

Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate today in Saudi Arabia?

At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 483.47 SAR per gram and 4,834.67 SAR per 10 grams, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. Local retail rates published by jewellers’ associations and bullion dealers will be higher because they add 15% VAT, premiums and making charges.

What is the difference between 22k and 24k gold?

Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths. 24k is pure gold (99.9% or more), 22k is 91.67% gold (fineness 916), 21k is 87.5% (875) and 18k is 75% (750). The rest is other metals such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, 22k gold costs about 8.3% less per gram than 24k, and 18k costs 25% less. Bars and coins are usually 24k; jewellery is usually 22k, 21k or 18k so that it does not bend or scratch easily.

Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?

This page shows the international spot price converted into SAR. A jeweller’s rate adds 15% VAT, a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery, and the shop’s own margin. It may also be based on a local association rate set once or twice a day rather than the live international price, so it lags on volatile days. A difference of a few percent is normal; a very large gap deserves questions.

Is it a good time to buy gold in Saudi Arabia?

We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the SAR exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.

Why is 21k gold so common in Saudi Arabia?

It is the regional tradition: 21k (87.5% gold, fineness 875) gives a deep yellow colour and is harder than 22k, so it suits everyday jewellery. 18k is used for designs that need strength or white-gold alloys, and 24k is reserved for bars and coins. Prices scale with purity, so a 21k gram costs about 12.5% less than a 24k gram before making charges.

Is VAT charged on gold in Saudi Arabia?

Yes. VAT is 15% and applies to gold jewellery. Investment-grade bars and coins are subject to specific rules on how VAT is applied, so confirm with a licensed dealer before buying. VAT is not included in the price on this page.
