How to Trade Gold in Saudi Arabia: XAUUSD Rules, CMA and SAMA Checks, Gold ETFs and Best Hours in KSA Time

Gold is deeply rooted in Saudi savings culture, and online ads for XAUUSD trading are everywhere. Saudi regulators have repeatedly warned about unlicensed forex platforms. This guide explains who regulates what, the routes to gold that sit inside the Saudi system, and the busiest gold hours in Riyadh time.

Can Saudi residents trade spot gold (XAUUSD)?

XAUUSD is the price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars. If you’re new to it, start with what XAUUSD is.

Saudi Arabia is stricter than many countries on online forex. In 2017, the Ministry of Commerce and Investment, the Capital Market Authority (CMA) and the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) launched a joint campaign against unlicensed forex and securities websites. As part of it, the CMA said it would not license sites or companies dealing in forex, and that such firms would be barred from advertising in the Kingdom. In 2022, a permanent committee chaired by the CMA warned again about unlicensed forex marketing, including social media accounts using photos of well-known people.

Many platforms advertising XAUUSD to Saudi residents are licensed abroad, not in the Kingdom. If something goes wrong, a Saudi regulator can’t help you recover money from them.

The good news: there are regulated ways to own gold.

Route What you own Inside the Saudi system? Notes
Gold ETF on Tadawul Units of a listed gold fund Yes, listed on the Saudi Exchange Albilad Gold ETF (symbol 9405), described as Shariah-compliant
Physical gold Bars, coins, jewellery Dealers are licensed traders Check purity, making charges and buy-back spread
Gold-related listed shares and funds Equity exposure Yes, via CMA-licensed brokers Indirect: miners and funds can move differently from gold
Offshore CFD and forex platforms Contracts on the gold price Not licensed in Saudi Arabia Saudi authorities have warned about unlicensed forex activity

The regulators: CMA and SAMA

Capital Market Authority (CMA)

The CMA (cma.org.sa) regulates the Saudi capital market under the Capital Market Law and licenses capital market institutions: brokers, asset managers and advisers. If a firm offers you securities or investment services in the Kingdom, it should appear in the CMA’s list of authorised persons.

Saudi Central Bank (SAMA)

SAMA (sama.gov.sa) supervises banks, finance companies and payment providers. If a platform asks you to pay through an unusual payment app or a personal account, that’s a warning sign, and SAMA’s licensed-entity lists help you check who you are dealing with.

How to check a firm

  1. Search the firm’s exact legal name on the CMA and SAMA lists of licensed entities.
  2. Make sure the website domain matches the one in the official record.
  3. Treat “licensed in another country” as not licensed in Saudi Arabia.
  4. Never send money to an individual’s account or a crypto wallet to “open a trading account”.

The Tadawul gold ETF

The Albilad Gold ETF started trading on the Saudi Exchange on 2 June 2020 under symbol 9405, after CMA approval earlier that year. The Dubai Gold & Commodities Exchange described it as the region’s first physically backed, Shariah-compliant gold ETF. It’s priced in riyals and trades during Saudi market hours, so it won’t react to gold moves that happen overnight until the next session.

An ETF gives you no leverage, which removes the biggest risk that wipes out new traders: a small move against an oversized position. Check the fund’s fact sheet for fees and how it tracks gold.

Shariah considerations

Gold has specific rules in Islamic finance. Standards generally require gold to be exchanged hand to hand, and many leveraged contracts that roll overnight with interest-like swap charges may not meet them. “Swap-free” or “Islamic” accounts at offshore platforms are a marketing label, not a fatwa. If this matters to you, check a product’s Shariah certification and ask a qualified scholar.

Tax overview (general terms only)

Saudi Arabia has no personal income tax for individual Saudi residents on most investment gains. Zakat is a separate obligation, and how it applies to gold, funds and trading balances depends on your circumstances. Ask a qualified adviser. Non-Saudi residents should check how their home country taxes their gains.

Best gold trading hours in Saudi Arabia (KSA time)

Saudi Arabia stays on UTC+3 all year, so the gold sessions shift by an hour when the UK and US change their clocks.

Session Northern summer Northern winter What usually happens
Asian session 02:00โ€“10:00 03:00โ€“11:00 Quieter, smaller ranges
London open 10:00 11:00 Volatility picks up
US data (8:30 New York) 15:30 16:30 Often the biggest moves of the day
Londonโ€“New York overlap 15:00โ€“19:00 16:00โ€“20:00 Deepest liquidity
Daily break (5 pm New York) 00:00 01:00 Spreads widen

Our market hours tool shows today’s exact times in your time zone.

What this means for your day

Saudi traders get the busiest gold window in the afternoon, after midday prayers and well before late evening. That’s convenient: you can plan in the morning and watch the US data window without staying up past midnight.

Position sizing in riyals

Gold moves a lot. Over the 20 sessions to 19 October 2026, the average daily high-to-low range was about $77 (see how much gold moves per day). On a standard 100-ounce lot, that’s $7,700.

A simple rule: risk 1% or less of your account per trade.

Hypothetical example: with SAR 20,000 (about $5,330 at 3.75 riyals per dollar), 1% is about $53. With a $10 stop, that’s 5.3 ounces, or about 0.05 lot. Use our position size calculator for your own numbers.

Common scams and red flags in Saudi Arabia

  • “Guaranteed” daily or monthly returns. Real trading has losing months.
  • Fake celebrity or official endorsements. Saudi authorities specifically warned about ads using photos of well-known figures.
  • Account managers on WhatsApp or Telegram who trade “for you”. See Telegram signal red flags.
  • Withdrawal fees or “taxes” before you can withdraw. Legitimate firms don’t ask for more money to release yours.
  • Pressure to recruit friends for bonuses.

If you think you’ve been targeted, stop sending money, keep records, and report it to the authorities. Don’t pay “recovery agents” who promise to get your money back for a fee; that’s a common second scam.

Getting started safely: a step-by-step checklist

  1. Learn the basics: what moves gold prices and risk management.
  2. Decide on your route: ETF, physical gold, or listed shares through a CMA-licensed broker.
  3. Check every firm on the CMA and SAMA lists.
  4. Practise on paper or a demo first, and keep a trading journal.
  5. Never risk money you need for living costs.

Educational content only, not financial advice. Trading gold with leverage carries a high risk of loss. Laws change; check the CMA’s and SAMA’s current guidance before you trade.
