Gold price in the Philippines: per gram in pesos

Filipino jewellers quote gold per gram, and the purity most people ask for is 18k or 21k ("Saudi gold", named for the pieces brought home by overseas workers), with 24k for bars and coins and 14k in cheaper jewellery. There is no single national rate list; shops in Meycauayan in Bulacan, the centre of the jewellery industry, and in Manila's Chinatown set prices from the international price and the peso. Today's conversion gives 8,206 PHP per gram for 24k, 7,180 PHP for 21k and 6,154 PHP for 18k, before VAT and labour.

OFWs, pawnshops and where Filipinos buy

Gold reaches Filipino households in a particular way: a large share arrives as jewellery bought in the Gulf and carried home by overseas Filipino workers, which is why Middle Eastern purities are so familiar. At home, jewellery is bought for weddings, baptisms and graduations, and pawnshops are a major part of the market, because gold jewellery is the most common collateral for a short-term loan. Pawnshop appraisal rates (the peso value they lend per gram at each karat) are a useful local benchmark and are usually well below the spot conversion. Bars and coins are sold by a small number of dealers and banks.

The BSP, small-scale miners and tax

The Philippines is a gold producer, and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas buys gold from small-scale miners for the national reserves; a 2019 law made those sales to the BSP exempt from income tax and excise tax to pull the trade out of the informal market. For buyers, 12% VAT applies to jewellery sold in shops, and import duties affect pieces brought in commercially, while personal items carried home by travellers fall under customs allowances. None of these is included in the price on this page.

What moves the peso gold price

Two things: the international price and the USD/PHP rate. The peso tends to weaken when the dollar is strong and US rates are high, which is also when gold in dollars often struggles, so the two effects can partly offset each other; when the dollar falls, Filipinos can see gold rise in dollars but less in pesos. Remittance flows around Christmas support the peso seasonally. The global drivers, from Federal Reserve policy to central-bank buying, are explained in what moves gold prices.

Trading hours in Philippine time

The Philippines is on PHT (UTC+8) all year. The Asian session covers the local working day, the London open comes in the afternoon, and the London–New York overlap falls today at about 20:00–00:00 PHT, late in the evening, when US data moves the market. Online trading of XAUUSD is widely advertised; the SEC and BSP have warned about unregistered platforms, so check registration first. The Philippines gold trading guide explains the legal routes and the market hours tool shows every session in your time.

How this PHP gold price is calculated

Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,010.0 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 63.648 PHP. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.

  1. Price per gram in USD = $4,010.0 ÷ 31.1035 = $128.92.
  2. Price per gram in PHP = $128.92 × 63.648 = 8,206 PHP (24k, pure gold).
  3. Price per 10 grams = 8,206 × 10 = 82,058 PHP.
  4. For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 22k = 0.9167, 21k = 0.875, 18k = 0.750.

The gold price comes from COMEX gold futures, which track spot XAUUSD closely but are not identical to it. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. What this price does not include

The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in the Philippines, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The retail or "jeweller" price adds some or all of these on top:

  • Import duty or customs charges, where the country imports most of its gold.
  • Sales tax, GST or VAT, which may apply to jewellery, to bars and coins, or to both, depending on local law.
  • Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
  • Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
  • Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.

When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

Education only. This page shows a converted international price for learning and comparison. It is not a quote, not a recommendation to buy or sell, and not financial advice. Prices change constantly and your local dealer's rate will differ.

Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate today in the Philippines?

At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 8,206 PHP per gram and 82,058 PHP per 10 grams, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. Local retail rates published by jewellers’ associations and bullion dealers will be higher because they add 12% VAT where it applies, premiums and making charges.

What is the difference between 22k and 24k gold?

Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths. 24k is pure gold (99.9% or more), 22k is 91.67% gold (fineness 916), 21k is 87.5% (875) and 18k is 75% (750). The rest is other metals such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, 22k gold costs about 8.3% less per gram than 24k, and 18k costs 25% less. Bars and coins are usually 24k; jewellery is usually 22k, 21k or 18k so that it does not bend or scratch easily.

Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?

This page shows the international spot price converted into PHP. A jeweller’s rate adds 12% VAT where it applies, a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery, and the shop’s own margin. It may also be based on a local association rate set once or twice a day rather than the live international price, so it lags on volatile days. A difference of a few percent is normal; a very large gap deserves questions.

Is it a good time to buy gold in the Philippines?

We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the PHP exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.

What is 'Saudi gold' in the Philippines?

It is a nickname for 18k or 21k yellow gold jewellery of the kind sold in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, often brought home by overseas Filipino workers. The name describes the style and origin, not a special purity: 21k is 87.5% gold and 18k is 75%, wherever it was made. Check the karat stamp and ask the shop to test it.

Why do pawnshops value gold below the price on this page?

Pawnshops lend against gold, so they appraise it conservatively: they discount for purity, wear, stones and the risk that they will have to sell it. Their per-gram appraisal is a loan value, not a retail price. The spot conversion here is the international value of the pure gold content, which is the ceiling, not the price you receive.
