How gold is sold in Kuwait
Kuwait sells gold per gram in dinars. We found no official body that publishes a national daily retail rate; shops price from the international rate. Because the dinar is worth more than three US dollars, the numbers look small: today the bare international price is about 40.667 KWD per gram of 24k gold and 35.583 KWD for 21k.
Hallmarks, price labels and no cash
All gold for sale must be hallmarked by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, which supervises the trade and does the testing and stamping under Decree-Law No. 23 of 1980. Selling or holding for sale any unhallmarked article is prohibited, with penalties of up to six months in prison and a KD 5,000 fine, doubled for repeat offences. The legal gold standards are 24, 22, 21 and 18 karat (1000, 916.6, 875 and 750 parts per thousand). In the first half of 2025 the ministry's Precious Metals Department tested and hallmarked about 18 million grams of gold.
- Labels: since 9 May 2021, every gold piece's label must show the karat, the weight and the making charge, plus the company name, a barcode, the gold type and any gems, and each piece must carry a fixed price.
- No cash: under Decision No. 182/2025, reported in November 2025, firms dealing in gold, precious stones and precious metals may not take cash; buyers must pay by a non-cash method approved by the Central Bank of Kuwait.
No VAT, but 5% customs duty
Kuwait has no VAT. The Gulf VAT framework was signed in February 2017, but the national law is still under discussion in Parliament (PwC, July 2026). Imports pay 5% customs duty on their value under the Gulf's common tariff, and imported valuables are inspected and stamped by the ministry. The making charge and the shop's margin come on top; this page includes none of them.
Where gold is sold
Souq Mubarakiya, one of Kuwait City's oldest markets, about 120 years old and named after Amir Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah, sells gold jewellery among other goods. It was damaged in 1990 and in a fire in 2022, and still trades.
A basket peg, not a dollar peg
Since 20 May 2007 the Central Bank of Kuwait has pegged the dinar to an undisclosed weighted basket of the currencies of Kuwait's main trade and financial partners. Before that, from 2003 to 2007, it was pegged to the US dollar. Because the basket is not only the dollar, USD/KWD moves a little: the central bank lists an average of 306.4 fils per dollar for 2025. Day to day, the international gold price is still the bigger driver of the dinar gold price. See what moves gold prices.
Rules for gold traders in Kuwait
In August 2022 the Ministry of Commerce and Industry urged the public to avoid forex adverts that use celebrities' pictures to push unauthorised and fake platforms, calling forex a high-risk activity the Central Bank of Kuwait has warned about. Check any firm's licence with Kuwait's regulators before you trade.

Trading hours in Arabia Standard Time
The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 16:00–20:00 AST. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Kuwait is on AST (UTC+3) all year, so the overlap falls in the late afternoon and evening. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.
How this KWD gold price is calculated
Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 0.3106 KWD. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.
- Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
- Price per gram in KWD = $130.92 × 0.3106 = 40.67 KWD (24k, pure gold).
- Price per 10 grams = 40.67 × 10 = 406.67 KWD.
- For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 22k = 0.9167, 21k = 0.875, 18k = 0.75.
The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. If you want to do the maths yourself, our guide to converting the gold price per gram, tola and kilo walks through every step with worked examples.
What this price does not include
The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Kuwait, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:
- Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
- Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
- Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
- Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
- Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.
When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

Frequently asked questions
What is the gold rate today in Kuwait?
At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 40.67 KWD per gram and 406.67 KWD per 10 grams, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. We found no official daily gold rate in Kuwait; shops price from the international rate, and each piece’s label must show its karat, weight and making charge.
What is the difference between 22k and 24k gold?
Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 22k is 91.67% gold (fineness 916); 21k is 87.5% gold (fineness 875); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 22k is worth 8.3% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. Kuwait’s legal gold standards are 24, 22, 21 and 18 karat, and every piece for sale must carry the Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s hallmark.
Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?
This page shows the international spot price converted into KWD, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds the shop’s margin and the 5% customs duty on imported jewellery (Kuwait has no VAT), a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.
Is it a good time to buy gold in Kuwait?
We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the KWD exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.
Can I pay cash for gold in Kuwait?
No. Under Ministry of Commerce and Industry Decision No. 182/2025, reported in November 2025, firms dealing in gold, precious stones and precious metals may not take cash. Payment must be by a non-cash method approved by the Central Bank of Kuwait, and shops that break the rule can be closed.
Is the Kuwaiti dinar pegged to the dollar?
Not directly. Since 20 May 2007 the Central Bank of Kuwait has pegged the dinar to an undisclosed weighted basket of currencies. So USD/KWD is stable but not fixed (the bank lists an average of 306.4 fils per dollar for 2025), and small moves in it show up in the dinar gold price.
