What time does gold move the most?
Gold moves most in the hour after US economic data and the New York open. Across 11,443 one-hour bars of COMEX gold futures from 30 Oct 2024 to 30 Oct 2026, the busiest hour in New York time was 09:00–10:00 (average high-low range $27.28). In IST the busiest hour was 19:30–20:30 IST ($26.67) and in GMT 14:00–15:00 ($26.67), about 2.4 times the quietest GMT hour, 04:00–05:00 ($10.92). The figures differ slightly because each zone groups the bars by its own clock, which shifts with daylight saving.
The quiet stretch is late in the New York afternoon and the hours around the Asian lunch break: in GMT the three quietest hours were 04:00–05:00 ($10.92), 21:00–22:00 ($12.28), 20:00–21:00 ($12.88). Use the selector above to see every hour in your own time zone; the chart re-buckets the raw bars in that zone's local clock, so daylight saving changes are handled bar by bar.
Most and least volatile hours in IST (India)
| Rank | Busiest hour (IST) | Avg range | Quietest hour (IST) | Avg range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 19:30–20:30 | $26.67 | 09:30–10:30 | $10.92 |
| 2 | 18:30–19:30 | $26.31 | 02:30–03:30 | $12.28 |
| 3 | 20:30–21:30 | $23.01 | 01:30–02:30 | $12.88 |
| 4 | 06:30–07:30 | $22.96 | 08:30–09:30 | $13.38 |
| 5 | 17:30–18:30 | $21.78 | 00:30–01:30 | $14.48 |
India does not change its clocks, but the US and UK do, so US data lands at 18:00 IST in the US summer and 19:00 IST in the US winter. Because the IST buckets are built from each bar's real time, both halves of the year are in this table; that is why the top IST hours (19:30, 18:30, 20:30) all sit in the window when US data and the New York open arrive.
Most and least volatile hours in GMT
| Rank | Busiest hour (GMT) | Avg range | Quietest hour (GMT) | Avg range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 14:00–15:00 | $26.67 | 04:00–05:00 | $10.92 |
| 2 | 13:00–14:00 | $26.31 | 21:00–22:00 | $12.28 |
| 3 | 15:00–16:00 | $23.01 | 20:00–21:00 | $12.88 |
| 4 | 01:00–02:00 | $22.96 | 03:00–04:00 | $13.38 |
| 5 | 12:00–13:00 | $21.78 | 19:00–20:00 | $14.48 |
Measured as a share of the price instead of dollars (gold rose from about $2,792 to $3,990 during the window, which inflates later dollar ranges), the ranking barely changes: the busiest GMT hours were 14:00–15:00 (0.68%), 13:00–14:00 (0.67%), 15:00–16:00 (0.58%) and the quietest 04:00–05:00 (0.28%), 21:00–22:00 (0.31%), 20:00–21:00 (0.32%).
Is the pattern stable? In the most recent 26 weeks alone (from 1 May 2026), the three busiest GMT hours were 13:00, 12:00, 14:00, against 14:00, 13:00, 15:00 over the full two years (2 of 3 the same). The US data hours stay on top; the exact order moves around as the news flow changes.
Sessions and weekdays
By session, the average London session (08:00–17:00 UK time) covered $60.36 from high to low, New York (08:00–17:00 New York time) $59.11 and Asia (09:00–18:00 Tokyo) $51.61. The London–New York overlap is short, so its total range ($50.26) is smaller, but it packs the most movement into each hour: $24.84 of range per hour against $16.47 in Asia.
By weekday, Thu had the widest average trading day ($91.89) and Fri the narrowest ($84.00). The gap between weekdays is far smaller than the gap between hours, so the hour you trade matters more than the day.
How to read the chart
- Average high-low range: how far gold travelled inside the hour, on average. This is what a stop placed inside the hour has to survive.
- Average open-to-close move: the absolute distance from the hour's open to its close. A big range with a small move means price whipped both ways.
- Range as % of price: the same range divided by the hour's opening price, which removes the effect of gold's higher price later in the window.
- The time on each bar is the start of the hour in the zone you picked. India's half-hour offset means IST bars start at :30.
Method and data source
We downloaded every one-hour bar of the continuous COMEX gold futures contract (GC=F) from Yahoo Finance for 30 Oct 2024 to 30 Oct 2026 (11,443 bars, 482 full trading days), dropped the bar still forming, and averaged high minus low and |close − open| for each hour of the day. Each bar is converted to the chosen zone with the official time-zone database, so US, UK and Australian daylight saving is applied on the exact dates. Sessions use each city's own clock: Asia = 09:00–18:00 Tokyo, London = 08:00–17:00 UK time, New York = 08:00–17:00 New York time, and the overlap = the hours inside both. Weekdays follow the CME trading day, which starts at 18:00 New York the evening before; days with fewer than 20 hourly bars (holidays) are left out. Futures track spot XAUUSD closely, but your broker's ranges can differ slightly. The data is refreshed weekly.
What traders can do with it
- Pick your hours. Breakout and momentum methods need the active hours; range methods often work better in the quiet ones. Our London vs New York sessions guide and the best time to trade gold in India (IST) explain the trade-offs.
- Size the stop for the hour. A $5 stop inside the busiest hour sits well inside its average range. Set the distance with the ATR stop-loss calculator and the size with the position size calculator.
- Know when news lands. The busiest hours are the release hours; check the gold economic calendar before each session.
- Compare with today. The gold volatility (ATR) tool shows the current daily range and a 60-day weekday-by-hour heatmap, and gold market hours shows which session is open right now.
Timing and sizing only help if the method itself holds up. Our gold trading strategies, tested and gold indicator settings, tested hubs show how named strategies and indicator settings actually performed on real XAUUSD data with costs, including the losing streaks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most volatile time for gold in IST?
The three busiest IST hours were 19:30–20:30 ($26.67), 18:30–19:30 ($26.31), 20:30–21:30 ($23.01), all in the Indian evening when US data and the New York open arrive.
When is gold quietest?
In GMT the quietest hours were 04:00–05:00 ($10.92), 21:00–22:00 ($12.28), 20:00–21:00 ($12.88): late New York afternoon and the Asian lunch hours. In IST that is 09:30, 02:30, 01:30.
Which day of the week is gold most volatile?
Thu had the widest average trading day over the last two years ($91.89), Fri the narrowest ($84.00). The difference between days is small compared with the difference between hours.
Does daylight saving change the best time to trade gold?
Yes, in most of the world. US data is fixed at 8:30 am New York time, so in IST it moves from 18:00 in the US summer to 19:00 in the US winter, and in the UK it is 13:30 most of the year but 12:30 for a few weeks in March and late October when the two countries change clocks on different dates. This tool converts every bar at its real time, so the hours you see already include those shifts.
Where does the data come from?
One-hour bars of COMEX gold futures (GC=F) from Yahoo Finance, 30 Oct 2024 to 30 Oct 2026, refreshed weekly. Futures track spot XAUUSD closely, but exact ranges at your broker can differ slightly.
