    GoldBod's official purchase price

Since 1 July 2026 the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has set an official domestic gold purchase price twice a day: one at 10:30 based on the London (LBMA) morning price, and one at 15:00 based on the LBMA afternoon price, each converted into cedis at the Bank of Ghana reference rate. The price is binding: licensed buyers may not buy gold at any other price, and doing so is an offence under the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140). GoldBod quotes it per "pound", a local trade unit. For comparison, the bare international price today works out to about 1,533 GHS per gram of 24k gold.

GoldBod: the sole buyer of small-scale gold

Act 1140 was passed on 29 March 2025 and signed on 2 April 2025. GoldBod is now the sole buyer, seller, assayer and exporter of gold from licensed artisanal and small-scale miners, and since 1 May 2025 buying or dealing in gold without a GoldBod licence is an offence. From 1 January to 20 October 2026 GoldBod exported 85.4 tonnes of small-scale gold worth US$11.6 billion, and in 2026 it bought 1.8 tonnes of large-scale miners' gold, worth US$224 million, and delivered it to the Bank of Ghana for the reserves.

    Taxes on gold in Ghana

The VAT Act, 2025 (Act 1151) came into force on 1 January 2026 with a 15% VAT rate, and two levies of 2.5% each (NHIL and GETFund) stay on top; the old 3% flat-rate scheme for retailers was removed. None of the Act's exempt, zero-rated or relief schedules lists gold or jewellery, so in our reading a registered jeweller's sales are taxed at the standard rate. Separately, a 2025 amendment abolished the 1.5% withholding tax on small-scale miners' gold, and a levy on mining companies rose from 1% to 3% of gross production, extended to 2028.

    Buying gold safely in Ghana

We found no national hallmarking scheme for jewellery: the Hallmarking Convention's profile of Ghana lists no legal fineness standards and no assay office. So buy from licensed dealers, ask for the gold to be tested and for a receipt that states weight and purity, and treat offers far below the converted price on this page as a warning sign. The Bank of Ghana launched a Ghana Gold Coin in September 2024, of 99.99% gold in 1, ½ and ¼ ounce sizes, sold through commercial banks in cedis at a price based on the London price.

What moves the cedi gold price

The official purchase price is the LBMA price times the Bank of Ghana rate, so a stronger cedi lowers the cedi price of gold and a weaker cedi raises it. Watch the dollar price and the exchange rate separately; this page shows both. See what moves gold prices.

Rules for gold traders in Ghana

The Securities and Exchange Commission Ghana licenses capital-market firms and runs a public licensee search. Its 2025 and 2026 notices warn against unlicensed trading platforms and fraudulent schemes, and it publishes a list of entities operating without a licence.

Our country guides explain how to check a firm before you open an account.

Trading hours in Greenwich Mean Time

The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 13:00–17:00 GMT. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Ghana is on GMT (UTC+0) all year, the same as London in winter, so the overlap falls in the afternoon. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.

How this GHS gold price is calculated

Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 11.707 GHS. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.

    1. Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
    2. Price per gram in GHS = $130.92 × 11.707 = 1,533 GHS (24k, pure gold).
    3. Price per 10 grams = 1,533 × 10 = 15,326 GHS.
    4. For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 22k = 0.9167, 18k = 0.75.

The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. If you want to do the maths yourself, our guide to converting the gold price per gram, tola and kilo walks through every step with worked examples.

What this price does not include

The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Ghana, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:

    • Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
    • Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
    • Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
    • Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
    • Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.

When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate today in Ghana?

At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 1,533 GHS per gram and 15,326 GHS per 10 grams, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. In Ghana the official benchmark is GoldBod’s purchase price for raw gold, set twice a day from the London price and the Bank of Ghana rate; jewellers set their own retail prices.

What is the difference between 22k and 24k gold?

Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 22k is 91.67% gold (fineness 916); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 22k is worth 8.3% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. We found no national hallmarking scheme for jewellery in Ghana, so ask for the purity to be tested and written on the receipt.

Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?

This page shows the international spot price converted into GHS, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds 15% VAT plus 5% in levies on taxable sales, a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.

Is it a good time to buy gold in Ghana?

We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the GHS exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.

How does GoldBod set the gold price in Ghana?

Since 1 July 2026 the Ghana Gold Board sets an official purchase price twice a day: at 10:30 from the LBMA morning price and at 15:00 from the LBMA afternoon price, converted at the Bank of Ghana reference rate. Licensed buyers may not buy at any other price.

Is there VAT on gold jewellery in Ghana?

In our reading, yes. The VAT Act, 2025, in force since 1 January 2026, sets VAT at 15% with two 2.5% levies on top, and its exempt and zero-rated schedules do not list gold or jewellery, so a registered jeweller’s sales are taxed at the standard rate. This page shows the international price with no tax.
