Chuk kam gold and the tael
Hong Kong prices gold per tael (leung), the traditional Chinese weight, and by the gram. Purity marks are set by law: under the Trade Descriptions (Marking) (Gold and Gold Alloy) Order, the mark 足金 (chuk kam) may be used only on gold of at least 999 parts per thousand, and an invoice for gold of that purity must describe it as 足金. Today the bare international price works out to about 38,416 HKD per tael and 1,026 HKD per gram of pure gold.
Since 7 July 2026 a new "HAU" price ticker has been meant to give Hong Kong a reference gold price of its own.
The Hong Kong Gold Exchange
The former Chinese Gold and Silver Exchange Society became the Hong Kong Gold Exchange on 1 January 2025, and its traditional 99 Tael Gold contract is still tracked in official statistics under the new name. On 7 July 2026 Hong Kong also started a trial gold central clearing system, run by a wholly government-owned company, for gold settled between dealers in international-standard bars, and began linking it with the Shanghai Gold Exchange. The government plans more vault and refining capacity and new gold investment products.
No sales tax, but dealer rules
Hong Kong has no VAT, GST or sales tax, so gold is not taxed at the till, and mainland China's November 2025 gold VAT change does not apply here; the World Gold Council noted prices in Hong Kong may be lower as a result. Since 1 April 2023, dealers in precious metals and stones that deal in transactions of HK$120,000 or more must register with the Customs and Excise Department under anti-money-laundering rules. The price on this page excludes the dealer's margin and any workmanship fee.
A currency linked to the dollar
Under the Linked Exchange Rate System, running since 17 October 1983, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority keeps the Hong Kong dollar between 7.75 and 7.85 per US dollar. With so little currency movement, the HKD gold price follows XAUUSD almost exactly. See what moves gold prices.
Rules for gold traders in Hong Kong
The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) regulates the securities and futures markets and non-bank retail leveraged forex. It says that trading in bullion or Loco London gold, and spot precious-metal trading, is not regulated by the SFC, so a gold product is under SFC oversight only when it falls inside a regulated activity such as leveraged forex or futures.
Our guide to trading gold in Hong Kong covers the legal routes in more detail.
Trading hours in Hong Kong Time
The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 21:00–01:00 HKT. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Hong Kong is on HKT (UTC+8) all year, so the overlap falls late in the evening. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.
How this HKD gold price is calculated
Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 7.8396 HKD. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.
- Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
- Price per gram in HKD = $130.92 × 7.8396 = 1,026 HKD (24k, pure gold).
- Price per tael = 1,026 × 37.429 = 38,416 HKD.
- For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 18k = 0.75.
The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. What this price does not include
The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Hong Kong, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:
- Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
- Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
- Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
- Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
- Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.
When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

Frequently asked questions
What is the gold rate today in Hong Kong?
At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 1,026 HKD per gram and 38,416 HKD per tael, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. Hong Kong has no sales tax on gold; a new ‘HAU’ price ticker, launched in July 2026, is meant to give the city its own reference gold price.
What is the difference between 18k and 24k gold?
Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 18k is worth 25.0% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. Under Hong Kong law the mark 足金 (chuk kam) may only be used on gold of at least 999 fineness.
Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?
This page shows the international spot price converted into HKD, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds the dealer’s margin (Hong Kong has no sales tax), a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.
Is it a good time to buy gold in Hong Kong?
We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the HKD exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.
What does 足金 (chuk kam) mean on Hong Kong gold?
It is a legal purity mark. Under Hong Kong’s Trade Descriptions (Marking) (Gold and Gold Alloy) Order, 足金 may be used only on gold of at least 999 parts per thousand, and an invoice for such gold must describe it as 足金.
Is spot gold trading regulated in Hong Kong?
Not by the SFC. The Securities and Futures Commission says trading in bullion, Loco London gold and spot precious metals is not regulated by it; gold products come under the SFC only when they fall inside a regulated activity, such as leveraged forex or futures. Dealers in precious metals do have to register with Customs under anti-money-laundering rules.
