Gold price in the US: dollars per troy ounce

Gold has one international price, and it is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. That makes the United States the one market where no exchange rate stands between the world price and the local price: the spot price at the top of this page, about $4,041.6 an ounce at the last update, is the US gold price. Traders call the same number XAUUSD. Per gram it is the ounce price divided by 31.1035 ($129.94), and per kilogram it is 1,000 times the gram price ($129,940).

    Spot price vs futures price

Two US-dollar gold prices are quoted side by side. The spot price is the price for gold delivered now, and it is the one shown live on this page. The futures price is the price on COMEX, the CME Group exchange in New York, for gold delivered on a later date. Because whoever holds gold until then pays financing and storage, the nearby futures contract usually trades a few dollars above spot, and contracts further out trade higher still. Charts that show "gold futures" or the ticker GC are therefore a little above the spot figure here; the two move together almost tick for tick.

    How US traders access gold

    • COMEX gold futures (GC): 100 troy ounces per contract, traded on margin through a futures broker. At today's spot price one contract controls roughly $404,160 of gold.
    • Micro Gold futures (MGC): 10 troy ounces per contract, a tenth of GC, which makes position sizing easier on smaller accounts. CME Group has also listed a 1-ounce gold contract; check the exchange's own specifications for what your broker supports.
    • Options on gold futures, for traders who want a defined maximum loss on the premium paid.
    • Gold ETFs, which trade like shares through an ordinary stock brokerage account. Some hold physical bars in a vault, others hold futures; the fund's prospectus says which, and what it charges each year.
    • Physical bullion and coins from dealers and mints, priced at spot plus a premium. US Mint American Eagle gold coins are 22k and American Buffalo coins are 24k.

Futures and options on futures are regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), and futures firms must be members of the National Futures Association (NFA); ETFs and stock brokers fall under the SEC and FINRA. Our guide to trading gold in the USA covers each route, the tax treatment and how to check a firm on NFA BASIC or FINRA BrokerCheck.

Why gold CFDs are not available to US retail traders

Most XAUUSD content online assumes a CFD (contract for difference) account. That does not apply in the United States: CFDs are not available to US retail traders. US commodity law, enforced by the CFTC, requires leveraged commodity transactions with retail customers to take place on regulated exchanges, and CFDs are off-exchange contracts (CFDs on securities would fall under the SEC). CFD providers therefore do not accept US residents, and a firm that offers gold CFDs to US retail clients is generally operating outside US rules. US traders who want leveraged exposure to the gold price use exchange-traded futures such as GC and MGC instead.

Sales tax and what the spot price leaves out

The figures on this page are the bare spot price. What you pay a dealer adds a premium over spot, usually larger on small bars and coins, and jewellery adds the retailer's markup on top of its gold content. Sales tax is set state by state: many states exempt investment bullion and coins, others tax them, and some exempt only purchases above a threshold, while jewellery is generally taxed as an ordinary retail sale. Check your own state's revenue department before a purchase; we do not list rates here because they change and differ by locality.

Gold market hours in US time

Gold trades from Sunday 6:00 pm to Friday 5:00 pm New York time, with a daily break from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The busiest stretch is the London–New York overlap, today about 08:00–12:00 ET, when major US data such as CPI and payrolls is released at 8:30 am ET. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone, and the gold events pages show how gold reacted to each US release.

Size a gold trade in dollars

A $1 move in gold is worth $100 on one GC contract (100 oz), $10 on one MGC contract (10 oz) and $1 on a 1-ounce contract. The same arithmetic drives every gold calculator on this site: the gold pip calculator shows the dollar value of a move, the position size calculator turns a dollar risk and a stop distance into a size, and the lot size by account size table gives a starting point for common balances. The calculators work in XAUUSD lots of 100 oz, so 0.10 lot equals one MGC contract.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the gold price today in the US?

At the last update the spot gold price was about $4,041.6 per troy ounce, which is $129.94 per gram and $129,940 per kilogram for pure (24k) gold. The figures at the top of this page refresh every few seconds while the market is open.

Is the US gold price the same as XAUUSD?

Yes. XAUUSD is the spot price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars, which is exactly how gold is priced in the United States. COMEX gold futures (GC) trade a few dollars above spot because they settle at a later date.

Can US residents trade gold CFDs?

No. CFDs are not available to US retail traders. Under US commodity law, enforced by the CFTC, leveraged commodity trades with retail customers must go through regulated exchanges, and CFDs are off-exchange contracts. US traders use COMEX gold futures (GC, MGC), options on futures, gold ETFs or physical gold instead.

How big are COMEX gold futures contracts?

The standard COMEX gold contract (GC) is 100 troy ounces and Micro Gold (MGC) is 10 troy ounces. CME Group has also listed a 1-ounce gold contract. A $1 move in gold is worth $100 on GC and $10 on MGC.

Do I pay sales tax on gold in the US?

It depends on the state. Many states exempt investment bullion and coins from sales tax, some tax them, and some exempt only larger purchases; jewellery is generally taxed. Check your state’s revenue department, because the rules differ and change.

Why is the price at a coin dealer higher than the spot price?

Dealers sell at spot plus a premium that covers minting, distribution and their margin, and the premium is usually larger per ounce on small coins and bars. When you sell back, dealers usually pay below spot. The gap between the two is the real cost of owning physical gold.
