US Retail Sales and Gold: How the Consumer Report Moves XAUUSD (Next Release Tue 17 Nov 2026)

US retail sales tell you how much American shoppers spent last month. For gold, the number matters because strong spending can keep the Fed raising rates, which lifts Treasury yields and the dollar. The October 2026 report comes out on Tuesday 17 November at 8:30 am New York time, which is 13:30 GMT and 19:00 IST. This guide explains the report in plain words, shows how gold moved in the last 12 release hours in our own data and gives a simple plan for the day.

The short answer

US retail sales for October 2026 come out on Tuesday 17 November 2026 at 8:30 am New York time: 13:30 GMT, 17:30 in Dubai, 19:00 in India and 21:30 in Singapore. The Census Bureau’s September report confirms the date and time.

How it moves gold: strong spending tends to push US Treasury yields and the dollar up, because it gives the Federal Reserve more reason to keep raising rates. Higher yields make a metal that pays no interest less attractive, so gold often dips on a strong report and firms on a weak one. But the link is loose. On 15 October 2026 the headline beat forecasts and gold still rose, because yields fell and the more important “control group” missed. This guide shows how to read the report the way the market does.

What the retail sales report is, in plain words

Every month the Census Bureau asks a sample of about 4,800 retail and food service companies how much they sold. It then scales the answers up to represent more than three million US businesses. The result is an estimate of how much Americans spent in shops, at petrol stations, online, at car dealers and in restaurants last month.

Three details matter for traders:

  1. It is “advance”. It is the first estimate, published about two weeks after the month ends. Each report also revises the previous two months, and the revisions can be large enough to change the story.
  2. It is in dollars, not in goods. The Census Bureau adjusts the figures for seasonal patterns, holidays and trading days, but not for price changes. So if fuel gets 10% more expensive, petrol station sales go up even if people buy the same amount of fuel. That is a big deal in 2026, when energy prices have been high.
  3. It has a margin of error. September’s +0.8% headline came with a 90% confidence range of ±0.4 points. A small change can be statistically the same as zero.

Consumer spending is about two-thirds of the US economy: personal consumption was 67.6% of GDP in the third quarter of 2026, according to BEA data on FRED. That is why the market treats this report as a quick check on the health of the economy.

The four numbers to read, in order

The headline is the number you see first on every screen, but professionals usually look past it.

Line What it includes Why it matters
Headline (total retail and food services) Everything First reaction, but noisy
Excluding autos Removes car and parts dealers Car sales swing a lot month to month
Excluding autos and gasoline Also removes petrol stations Strips out fuel price swings
Control group Also removes building materials and food services Closest to the spending used in GDP

The control group is not a line the Census Bureau prints. Analysts calculate it by taking the total and removing autos, gasoline stations, building materials and food services. Because it feeds most directly into the GDP estimate of consumer spending, it often decides the second, more lasting reaction.

The last report: September 2026

The Census Bureau published September’s figures on Thursday 15 October 2026.

Measure (September 2026) Month on month Year on year
Total retail and food services +0.8% ($745.0 billion) +6.3%
Excluding autos +0.9% +7.2%
Excluding gasoline stations +0.2% n/a
Excluding autos and gasoline +0.2% +5.0%
Gasoline stations +6.4% +28.1%
Control group (our calculation from Census Table 1) about +0.1% n/a

Forecasts had been about +0.3% for the headline, so it looked like a big beat. But almost all of it came from petrol stations, where sales rose 6.4% in one month and 28.1% in a year. September CPI, published the day before, showed gasoline prices up 9.1% in the month (seasonally adjusted) and 34.2% over the year, according to the BLS. Without fuel, spending grew only 0.2%, and the control group grew about 0.1%, below the roughly 0.3% analysts had expected. TD Economics estimated that sales grew only about 0.1% after adjusting for prices.

The August headline was also revised up, from +1.1% to +1.3%.

What gold did that day

Kitco reported spot gold at $4,154.16, up 1.20%, near the day’s highs after the release, and its morning report said the 10-year yield had fallen towards 5.08%, its lowest in about three weeks, while the dollar index eased to about 102.1 from an 18-month high the day before. In our own COMEX futures data, the release hour (shared that day with PPI and jobless claims) moved +$7.2 and the full session closed +1.58% (+$65.2).

That is the key lesson: a “strong” headline does not automatically mean gold falls. The market read through to the weak control group and the fuel-driven price effect, and yields went down. Gold followed yields, not the headline.

Two months earlier, on 14 August 2026, July’s sales fell 0.6% against an expected +0.1%, and Kitco reported gold up about 0.6% as the odds of a September Fed hike dropped from nearly 50% to about a third. That case behaved the way the textbook says.

Why retail sales move gold

Gold does not react to shoppers directly. It reacts through a chain:

  1. Strong spending suggests the economy can handle higher rates, and that demand may keep pushing prices up.
  2. The Fed is then more likely to hike, or to hike again.
  3. Treasury yields rise, especially the 2-year, and real yields (yields minus expected inflation) tend to rise with them.
  4. The dollar often strengthens.
  5. Gold, which pays no interest and is priced in dollars, tends to come under pressure.

A weak report runs the chain in reverse. Our guides on gold and Fed rate hikes, real yields and gold and gold versus the dollar index explain each link in more detail.

Why does this matter more than usual in November 2026? The Fed raised rates in September, held at 3.75% to 4.00% on 28 October in a 10 to 2 vote with two officials wanting a hike, and meets again on 8 to 9 December. After the strong October jobs report (165,000 jobs, unemployment 4.1%), markets priced roughly a three-in-four chance of a December hike. Retail sales on 17 November will be one of the last big pieces of data before that meeting, after CPI on 10 November and PPI on 13 November.

What gold did in the last 12 retail sales hours

These figures come from our COMEX gold futures one-hour bars, the same data behind the retail sales event page. The release-hour move runs from the close of the hour before 8:30 am New York to the close of the release hour. “Day” is the session close against the previous session close.

Wed 16 Sep 2026 +$5.6 $15.1 −$30.9
Fri 14 Aug 2026 +$5.1 $22.2 +$25.0
Thu 16 Jul 2026 −$47.7 $54.5 −$87.0

Wed 14 Jan 2026 PPI −$3.1 $18.5 +$39.5
Tue 16 Dec 2025 NFP +$19.3 $23.9 −$2.1

What this tells you:

  • The median release-hour range was about $27, from $15.1 to $66.1. That is calmer than CPI hours (median about $41 in the same data) but still enough to hit a tight stop.
  • The median absolute release-hour move was about $11. Eight of the 12 hours closed higher and four lower.
  • The full day usually moved much more than the release hour. The median session range was about $95. Retail sales often set the tone, and other news finishes the day.
  • The biggest hours came when retail sales shared the slot with a bigger report (NFP in March) or produced a clear surprise (July’s $54.5 range).

Past reactions do not predict the next one. Use them to size your position, not to guess direction.

Worked example: what $27 means for your account

Example with made-up account numbers. Priya has a $1,000 account and risks 1% per trade: $10. Retail sales hours in our data had a median range of about $27.

  • With 0.01 lots (1 ounce), every $1 move in gold is $1. A $27 swing is $27, or 2.7% of the account. A $15 stop costs $15, which is already more than the planned $10.
  • To keep the risk at $10 with a $15 stop, she would need about 0.0067 lots, which is below most platforms’ minimum of 0.01. So the honest answer is: with this account and this stop, the trade is too big on a news hour. She can wait for the release hour to finish and use a tighter, structure-based stop afterwards, or skip the trade.
  • On a 1:2 plan with a $10 stop at 0.01 lots, risk is $10 and the target is $20 away.

Our position size calculator does this maths for any account and stop.

How to read the 17 November report: a five-step routine

  1. Before: write down the consensus for the headline, ex-autos and the control group, and note what CPI on 10 November showed for fuel prices. If gasoline prices fell in October, a weak petrol-station line could drag the headline down even if people spent more elsewhere. The AAA national average was $4.10 a gallon on 5 November, down from $4.37 a month earlier.
  2. At 8:30 am New York: read the headline, then the control group, then the revisions to September. A strong headline with a weak control group (like September) is a mixed signal.
  3. Watch the 2-year yield and the dollar index, not just the gold chart. Gold usually follows them within minutes. The markets board shows them side by side.
  4. Wait for the first hourly candle to close. The first spike often fades once the details are read.
  5. Check the bigger picture: the gold cheat sheet for this week’s levels and the gold strength meter to see whether gold is moving against the dollar only or against every currency.

Spreads often widen in the minutes around 8:30 am New York, and stops can fill at a worse price than you set. Our guide on why the gold spread widens on news explains what to expect and how to protect yourself.

Common mistakes on retail sales day

Mistake Better way
Treating the headline as the whole story Read the control group and revisions too
Forgetting the data is not adjusted for inflation Check fuel prices and CPI before judging “strong” spending
Assuming strong data always means gold down Watch yields and the dollar; gold follows them
Using the normal position size on a news hour Size from a stop that allows for a $25 to $30 swing, or wait
Ignoring what else is out that day Check the economic calendar for other releases at 8:30 am

Frequently asked questions

What time are US retail sales released on 17 November 2026?

The Census Bureau publishes the advance retail sales report for October 2026 on Tuesday 17 November at 8:30 am Eastern Time. That is 13:30 GMT, 14:30 in Frankfurt, 17:30 in Dubai, 19:00 in India and 21:30 in Singapore.

Do strong retail sales make gold go up or down?

Usually down at first, but not always. A strong report suggests the economy can handle higher interest rates, so Treasury yields and the dollar tend to rise, which works against gold. A weak report tends to do the opposite. The size of the surprise against forecasts and the revisions matter more than the headline alone.

What is the retail sales control group?

It is the part of retail sales that leaves out autos, gasoline stations, building materials and food services. Economists watch it because it is closer to the spending figures used in GDP. A big gap between the headline and the control group often decides the market’s reaction.

Are US retail sales adjusted for inflation?

No. The Census Bureau reports retail sales in current dollars, adjusted for seasonal swings but not for price changes. So a rise can come partly from higher prices, for example more expensive fuel, rather than people buying more goods.

How much does gold move on retail sales day?

In our COMEX futures data for the last 12 releases, the median high-to-low range in the release hour was about $27, smaller than the roughly $41 median for CPI hours. The biggest was $66, when retail sales came out with the jobs report in March 2026.
