How gold is priced in Bangladesh: BAJUS rates per bhori

Bangladesh sells gold per bhori (vori), a traditional unit of about 11.66 grams; the baggage rules, for example, treat 117 grams as 10 bhori. The Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) publishes the official selling rates per bhori for 22-carat, 21-carat, 18-carat and "traditional" gold, each taking effect from a stated time, and gives a reason for each change.

Behind the rate is a local wholesale price. Each afternoon, around 3 pm, the Bangladesh Poddar Association, the wholesale traders of Tanti Bazar in Old Dhaka, fixes a pure-gold price, and BAJUS's pricing committee sets the retail rate from it. That wholesale price reflects gold arriving through the baggage channel, old jewellery collected around the country and prices in Kolkata, as well as the world price. Today the bare international price works out to about 190,209 BDT per bhori of 24k gold.

VAT is now inside the BAJUS rate

Since 18 June 2026 BAJUS gold rates include VAT, and jewellers may not collect VAT separately. The Finance Act 2026 replaced the old 5% VAT on gold with a fixed amount: Tk 2,500 per bhori for gold and platinum (Tk 100 per bhori for silver). The making charge is separate and depends on the design. The same Finance Act set a 5% capital gains tax on profits from selling gold and jewellery. When you sell, ask about the deduction before you agree a price.

    Bringing gold into Bangladesh

Most of the country's gold arrives through the baggage route rather than through licensed commercial imports, which had dwindled by late 2025; Commerce Ministry figures put yearly demand at 20 to 40 tonnes, with about a tenth met by recycled jewellery. Under the baggage rules from June 2025, a passenger may bring one gold bar of up to 117 grams (10 bhori) once a year, paying Tk 5,000 duty per bhori, and up to 100 grams of gold jewellery duty-free, also once a year.

Where gold is sold, and what moves the price

There is no gold exchange. Tanti Bazar in Old Dhaka is the wholesale centre, and jewellery shops nationwide sell at the BAJUS rate. The bhori price moves with the wholesale pure-gold rate, the world price and the USD/BDT exchange rate: Bangladesh Bank now lets the market set the taka's rate and says it will still step in when needed. When the taka weakens, the bhori price rises even if gold in dollars is flat. See what moves gold prices.

Rules for gold traders in Bangladesh

In a 2012 press release, Bangladesh Bank said foreign currency may be bought or sold only through dealers or money changers it authorises, and called forex trading by anyone else "illegal and punishable". Check the legal position before using any trading platform.

    Trading hours in Bangladesh time

The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 19:00–23:00 Bangladesh time. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Bangladesh is on UTC+6 all year, so the overlap falls in the evening. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.

How this BDT gold price is calculated

Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 124.56 BDT. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.

    1. Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
    2. Price per gram in BDT = $130.92 × 124.56 = 16,308 BDT (24k, pure gold).
    3. Price per bhori = 16,308 × 11.6638 = 190,209 BDT.
    4. For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 22k = 0.9167, 21k = 0.875, 18k = 0.75.

The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. If you want to do the maths yourself, our guide to converting the gold price per gram, tola and kilo walks through every step with worked examples.

What this price does not include

The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Bangladesh, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:

    • Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
    • Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
    • Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
    • Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
    • Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.

When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate today in Bangladesh?

At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 16,308 BDT per gram and 190,209 BDT per bhori, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. In Bangladesh shops sell at the BAJUS rate per bhori, which since June 2026 includes VAT; the making charge is added on top.

What is the difference between 22k and 24k gold?

Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 22k is 91.67% gold (fineness 916); 21k is 87.5% gold (fineness 875); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 22k is worth 8.3% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. BAJUS publishes official rates for 22-carat, 21-carat, 18-carat and ‘traditional’ gold.

Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?

This page shows the international spot price converted into BDT, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds the fixed VAT of Tk 2,500 per bhori (already inside the BAJUS rate), a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.

Is it a good time to buy gold in Bangladesh?

We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the BDT exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.

Does the BAJUS gold rate include VAT?

Yes, since 18 June 2026. BAJUS gold rates now include VAT, which the Finance Act 2026 set at a fixed Tk 2,500 per bhori for gold instead of 5%, and jewellers may not charge VAT separately. The making charge is still added on top. The international price on this page includes neither.

How much gold can I bring into Bangladesh?

Under the baggage rules from June 2025: one gold bar of up to 117 grams (10 bhori) once a year, paying Tk 5,000 duty per bhori, and up to 100 grams of gold jewellery duty-free, also once a year.
