How gold is sold in Qatar
Qatar sells gold per gram in riyals. We found no official body that publishes a national daily retail rate, so shops price from the international rate and then add a making charge and their margin. Today the bare international price works out to about 476.55 QAR per gram of 24k gold, 436.86 QAR for 22k and 416.98 QAR for 21k.
Hallmarks: no gold sold without a stamp
Gold is controlled by Law No. 4 of 1978 on the control, testing and hallmarking of precious metals. Under it, gold articles may not be sold, displayed or held for sale unless they carry the hallmark of the Government of Qatar or of a recognised foreign government. The legal gold standards are 23.5, 22, 21, 18, 16, 14 and 12 karat, and an article must contain at least 12 karats of gold (500 parts per thousand) to count as gold.
Testing and stamping are done by the Central Laboratories of the Qatar General Organisation for Standards and Metrology. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) advises buyers to check that the karat is marked on the piece and that the invoice shows it. On 16 September 2026 the Cabinet approved a draft law to replace the 1978 law and sent it to the Shura Council; it would strengthen the standards body's role.
No VAT, but customs duty on imported jewellery
Qatar charges no VAT or sales tax (PwC, reviewed September 2026). A Gulf-wide VAT, expected at 5%, has been discussed, but no start date has been announced. Goods from outside the Gulf normally pay 5% customs duty, and jewellery trade guides list the same 5% for imported gems and jewellery, so duty is part of a shop's cost. The price on this page includes none of these costs.
Shop checks and where gold is sold
MoCI enforces quality. In late 2024 it took gold samples from shops across the country for testing, and selling, displaying or advertising faulty gold can bring up to two years in prison and fines from QAR 3,000 to 1,000,000. In October 2025 its inspectors visited about 94 gold shops and recorded nine violations: shops had hidden gold and held back sales to influence prices, against the Consumer Protection Law. Complaints go to MoCI's call centre on 16001.
In Doha, the Gold Souq in Souq Najada, beside Souq Waqif, opened in July 2018 with about 50 shops under one roof. The Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition, organised by Qatar Tourism, is the year's high-end showcase; the 2026 edition ran from 28 September to 3 October at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre.
What moves the riyal gold price
The riyal is pegged to the US dollar at 3.64; even during the 2017 market stress, the Qatar Central Bank kept supplying dollars at up to 3.6415 under its peg. So the riyal gold price is the dollar price times a constant, and almost every move you see comes from gold itself. Read what moves gold prices for the global drivers.
Rules for gold traders in Qatar
Investment firms are supervised by the Qatar Financial Markets Authority and the Qatar Central Bank, and firms in the Qatar Financial Centre by the QFC Regulatory Authority. All three have issued public warnings about unlicensed firms, so check a platform's licence before you trade.
Our country guides explain how to check a firm before you open an account.
Trading hours in Arabia Standard Time
The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 16:00–20:00 AST. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Qatar is on AST (UTC+3) all year, so the overlap falls in the late afternoon and evening. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.
How this QAR gold price is calculated
Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 3.6400 QAR. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.
- Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
- Price per gram in QAR = $130.92 × 3.6400 = 476.55 QAR (24k, pure gold).
- Price per 10 grams = 476.55 × 10 = 4,765.53 QAR.
- For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 22k = 0.9167, 21k = 0.875, 18k = 0.75, 14k = 0.585.
The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. If you want to do the maths yourself, our guide to converting the gold price per gram, tola and kilo walks through every step with worked examples.
What this price does not include
The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Qatar, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:
- Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
- Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
- Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
- Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
- Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.
When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

Frequently asked questions
What is the gold rate today in Qatar?
At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 476.55 QAR per gram and 4,765.53 QAR per 10 grams, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. We found no official daily gold rate in Qatar; shops price from the international rate and add a making charge and their margin, with no VAT.
What is the difference between 22k and 24k gold?
Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 22k is 91.67% gold (fineness 916); 21k is 87.5% gold (fineness 875); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750); 14k is 58.5% gold (fineness 585). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 22k is worth 8.3% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. Qatar’s hallmarking law sets legal gold standards of 23.5, 22, 21, 18, 16, 14 and 12 karat, and gold may not be sold unless it is hallmarked.
Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?
This page shows the international spot price converted into QAR, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds the shop’s margin and the 5% customs duty on imported jewellery (Qatar has no VAT), a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.
Is it a good time to buy gold in Qatar?
We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the QAR exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.
Is there VAT on gold in Qatar?
No. Qatar charges no VAT or sales tax, so gold jewellery, bars and coins carry no sales tax. Imported jewellery does pay the usual 5% customs duty on goods from outside the Gulf, and the shop adds a making charge and its margin. This page shows the international price with none of these.
How do I check the purity of gold in Qatar?
Look for the hallmark and the karat. Under Law No. 4 of 1978, gold may not be sold unless it carries the Qatar government’s hallmark or a recognised foreign one, and the legal standards run from 23.5 down to 12 karat. MoCI advises checking that the karat is marked on the piece and on the invoice; complaints go to 16001.
