Gold price in Australia: per ounce and per gram

Australia quotes gold per troy ounce in Australian dollars, with per-gram prices for small bars and jewellery. The country is one of the world's largest gold producers, and The Perth Mint, owned by the Western Australian government, refines much of it and sells the Kangaroo coin and cast bars that are the local standard. Today's conversion gives A$5,705.78 per ounce and A$183.45 per gram for pure gold. Jewellery is usually 9ct and 18ct, and Australian consumer law requires purity claims to be accurate even though there is no compulsory hallmarking system.

GST-free bullion, taxable jewellery

Precious metal in investment form, meaning gold of at least 99.5% purity in bars, coins or wafers, is GST-free when sold by a dealer, so bullion is bought at spot plus a premium of a few percent. Jewellery and collectible coins attract 10% GST and carry making costs. Profits on gold held as an investment are generally subject to capital gains tax, with a discount for assets held longer than twelve months under current rules; check the treatment with a tax adviser before relying on it. The prices on this page exclude GST and premiums.

Where Australians buy and hold gold

Bullion is bought from the Perth Mint, from private dealers in the capital cities and online, and stored at home, in private vaults or through the Mint's own depository and certificate programmes. Listed gold is huge too: the ASX hosts major producers and physically backed ETFs. Jewellery demand peaks at Christmas and around weddings. Because the country exports most of what it mines, local supply does not push retail prices away from the international price, and premiums are competitive by global standards.

What moves the Australian dollar gold price

The Aussie dollar is a commodity and risk currency: it rises with iron ore, Chinese growth and global risk appetite and falls when the US dollar strengthens. Gold in US dollars often moves against the greenback, so the two effects partly cancel, and the AUD gold price tends to be steadier than the USD one, while hitting records of its own when the Aussie is weak. Reserve Bank of Australia decisions and China data move the currency; US rate expectations, real yields, central-bank buying and geopolitics move gold. See what moves gold prices.

Trading hours in Australian time

Australia opens the global gold week: Sydney's Monday morning is the first liquid trading of the week. The Asian session is the local day, London opens in the evening and the London–New York overlap, the busiest window, falls today at about 23:00–03:00 Sydney time, in the small hours; Perth is two or three hours earlier depending on daylight saving. Retail gold CFDs are regulated by ASIC with leverage capped at 1:20; the Australia gold trading guide covers the rules. The market hours tool shows every session in your city.

How this AUD gold price is calculated

Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,010.0 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 1.4229 AUD. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.

  1. Price per gram in USD = $4,010.0 ÷ 31.1035 = $128.92.
  2. Price per gram in AUD = $128.92 × 1.4229 = 183.45 AUD (24k, pure gold).
  3. Price per troy ounce = 183.45 × 31.1035 = 5,705.78 AUD.
  4. For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 22k = 0.9167, 21k = 0.875, 18k = 0.750.

The gold price comes from COMEX gold futures, which track spot XAUUSD closely but are not identical to it. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. What this price does not include

The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Australia, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The retail or "jeweller" price adds some or all of these on top:

  • Import duty or customs charges, where the country imports most of its gold.
  • Sales tax, GST or VAT, which may apply to jewellery, to bars and coins, or to both, depending on local law.
  • Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
  • Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
  • Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.

When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

Education only. This page shows a converted international price for learning and comparison. It is not a quote, not a recommendation to buy or sell, and not financial advice. Prices change constantly and your local dealer's rate will differ.

Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate today in Australia?

At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 183.45 AUD per gram and 5,705.78 AUD per troy ounce, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. Local retail rates published by jewellers’ associations and bullion dealers will be higher because they add GST on jewellery, premiums and making charges.

What is the difference between 22k and 24k gold?

Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths. 24k is pure gold (99.9% or more), 22k is 91.67% gold (fineness 916), 21k is 87.5% (875) and 18k is 75% (750). The rest is other metals such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, 22k gold costs about 8.3% less per gram than 24k, and 18k costs 25% less. Bars and coins are usually 24k; jewellery is usually 22k, 21k or 18k so that it does not bend or scratch easily.

Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?

This page shows the international spot price converted into AUD. A jeweller’s rate adds GST on jewellery, a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery, and the shop’s own margin. It may also be based on a local association rate set once or twice a day rather than the live international price, so it lags on volatile days. A difference of a few percent is normal; a very large gap deserves questions.

Is it a good time to buy gold in Australia?

We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the AUD exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.

Is there GST on gold in Australia?

Not on investment-grade precious metal: gold of at least 99.5% purity in bars, coins or wafers is GST-free. Jewellery, collectibles and lower-purity items attract 10% GST. The prices on this page are the international spot price in Australian dollars and exclude GST, dealer premiums and making charges.

Why is the AUD gold price at a record when the USD price is not?

Because the Australian dollar has fallen against the US dollar. The AUD price is the USD price multiplied by USD/AUD, so a weaker Aussie lifts the local price on its own. Australian holders are exposed to both gold and the exchange rate.
