Gold price in Japan: per gram in yen

Japan prices gold per gram in yen, tax included, and the daily retail prices published by the major bullion houses are the reference everyone uses; those prices include the 10% consumption tax and a buy–sell spread. Bars and coins are 99.99% pure, and jewellery is usually K18 (18k) or K24, with the karat written as "K" plus the number. Today's conversion gives ¥20,220 per gram for pure gold before tax; the published retail selling price will be higher, and the buy-back price a little lower than its selling counterpart.

Consumption tax and the weak yen

Japan is unusual in that consumption tax (10%) applies to gold bars and coins as well as jewellery, which is why quoted prices include it and why, when you sell, the buyer pays you the tax back as part of the price. The bigger story of recent years is the yen: its slide against the dollar pushed the yen gold price to successive records even in months when the dollar price was flat, and Japanese households that had held gold for decades found themselves with large gains. Gains on gold are taxable, with the treatment depending on how long it was held; check the rules with a tax adviser.

Who buys gold in Japan

Japanese demand is weighted to bars, coins and accumulation plans (junkin tsumitate), where savers buy a fixed yen amount of gold every month through bullion houses, securities firms or department stores. Jewellery demand is steady but not festival-driven as in South Asia; platinum has historically been as popular as gold for rings. Japan was a net seller of gold for many years as older holders cashed in, and switched back to net buying when the yen weakened and inflation returned. Gold ETFs on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and futures on the Osaka Exchange complete the picture.

What moves the yen gold price

Two things: the dollar price and USD/JPY. The yen is driven above all by the gap between Japanese and US interest rates, so Bank of Japan decisions and US Treasury yields move it, and official intervention can jolt it by several percent in a day. The dollar gold price responds to US rate expectations, real yields, central-bank buying and geopolitical risk. Because a weaker yen often coincides with a stronger dollar, which pressures gold, the two effects partly offset, but over the past years the yen has dominated. Read what moves gold prices.

Trading hours in Japan Standard Time

Tokyo is on JST (UTC+9) all year. The Asian session is the local day, London opens in the late afternoon and the London–New York overlap, the busiest window, falls today at about 21:00–01:00 JST, late in the evening and overnight. Gold futures trade on the Osaka Exchange (which took over the former TOCOM contracts in 2020), and retail forex and gold CFDs are offered by firms regulated by the Financial Services Agency, with leverage limits set by the regulator. The market hours tool shows every session in your time, and our country guides cover the wider region.

How this JPY gold price is calculated

Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,010.0 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 156.84 JPY. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.

  1. Price per gram in USD = $4,010.0 ÷ 31.1035 = $128.92.
  2. Price per gram in JPY = $128.92 × 156.84 = 20,220 JPY (24k, pure gold).
  3. Price per 10 grams = 20,220 × 10 = 202,205 JPY.
  4. For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 22k = 0.9167, 21k = 0.875, 18k = 0.750.

The gold price comes from COMEX gold futures, which track spot XAUUSD closely but are not identical to it. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. What this price does not include

The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Japan, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The retail or "jeweller" price adds some or all of these on top:

  • Import duty or customs charges, where the country imports most of its gold.
  • Sales tax, GST or VAT, which may apply to jewellery, to bars and coins, or to both, depending on local law.
  • Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
  • Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
  • Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.

When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

Education only. This page shows a converted international price for learning and comparison. It is not a quote, not a recommendation to buy or sell, and not financial advice. Prices change constantly and your local dealer's rate will differ.

Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate today in Japan?

At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 20,220 JPY per gram and 202,205 JPY per 10 grams, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. Local retail rates published by jewellers’ associations and bullion dealers will be higher because they add 10% consumption tax, premiums and making charges.

What is the difference between 22k and 24k gold?

Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths. 24k is pure gold (99.9% or more), 22k is 91.67% gold (fineness 916), 21k is 87.5% (875) and 18k is 75% (750). The rest is other metals such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, 22k gold costs about 8.3% less per gram than 24k, and 18k costs 25% less. Bars and coins are usually 24k; jewellery is usually 22k, 21k or 18k so that it does not bend or scratch easily.

Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?

This page shows the international spot price converted into JPY. A jeweller’s rate adds 10% consumption tax, a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery, and the shop’s own margin. It may also be based on a local association rate set once or twice a day rather than the live international price, so it lags on volatile days. A difference of a few percent is normal; a very large gap deserves questions.

Is it a good time to buy gold in Japan?

We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the JPY exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.

Does the gold price in Japan include consumption tax?

Published retail prices from Japanese bullion houses do: they include the 10% consumption tax. The price on this page does not; it is the international spot price converted to yen with nothing added. When you sell bars or coins to a dealer, the price you receive includes the tax portion, which is why Japanese prices are quoted the way they are.

What does K18 mean on Japanese jewellery?

K18 is 18-karat gold, 75% pure (fineness 750). K24 is pure gold and K14 is 58.5%. The ‘K’ prefix is simply the Japanese convention for writing karat. The gold value of a K18 piece is 75% of the per-gram price for pure gold on this page, before making charges and tax.
