Gold scalping course: sessions, costs, setups and honest tests
Scalping is the most cost-sensitive way to trade gold, and our own tests of simple 1, 5 and 15-minute strategies lost money. This course teaches the sessions, execution and cost maths first, then the setups, the test results and the limits that protect your account.
This free gold scalping course is for traders thinking about M1 to M15 trading on XAUUSD. It starts with whether scalping fits your day, then the London and New York sessions, order types, spreads, slippage and the stop-hunting problems that are really execution problems. Only then does it reach the scalping setups, followed by what happened when we tested simple 1, 5 and 15-minute strategies and the New York opening range on real gold data: every one lost after costs. It ends with daily loss limits and a journal that tells you, within a few weeks of demo trading, whether your own plan survives costs.

Module 5 What the tests showed
We tested simple, popular intraday rules on real gold data with realistic costs. None made money; read why before you scalp with real money.
- Tested on real data · 8 min readGold 1-Minute Scalping Strategy: An EMA Pullback Scalp Tested, and What Costs Do to ItData: M1, 21 trading days (Oct 2026). Result: 343 trades: −$144. Lost $0.12 a trade before costs; a $0.30 cost tripled the loss and $0.60 made it $247. On M1 the spread is most of the result. Verdict: Lost.Quiz passed
- Tested on real data · 7 min readGold 5-Minute Scalping Strategy: The EMA 50/200 and RSI(7) Pullback, Tested on XAUUSDData: M5, 50 trading days + H1 2 years. Result: 147 trades: −$60. Negative before costs, halves disagreed, and the same rules lost $744 on two years of hourly data. Verdict: Lost.Quiz passed
- Tested on real data · 7 min readGold 15-Minute Intraday Strategy: A Session Momentum Breakout Tested on XAUUSDData: M15, 50 trading days + H1 2 years. Result: 119 trades: −$263. Every version lost in both halves; the 200 EMA filter made it worse. A trailing exit, not a time stop, is what made hourly breakouts pay elsewhere. Verdict: Lost.Quiz passed
- Tested on real data · 7 min readNew York Opening Range Breakout on Gold: 15 and 30-Minute ORB Tested, With Time Zones Done RightData: M5, 49 sessions + H1 proxy 2 years. Result: OR15 2R: −$114. 15 and 30-minute ranges lost at 2R; 1R broke even. The 9:30 New York anchor is 13:30 GMT in US summer and 14:30 in winter. Verdict: Lost.Quiz passed
Practice task: Compare your setup with the tested ones. What does yours do differently, and how will you know whether that difference helps?
Module 6 Risk for scalpers
Many small trades amplify both costs and mistakes. Fixed risk, expectancy maths, daily limits and staying out of news straddles.
- Lesson · Intermediate · 13 min readTrading Math for Gold Traders: R-Multiples, Expectancy, Drawdowns and Position SizingQuiz passed
- Tested on real data · 7 min readGold News Straddle Strategy: Why Straddling NFP and CPI Blows Accounts, Tested on Real ReleasesData: 44 real releases, H1 + M5/M1 checks. Result: $5 straddle: −$231 with slippage. Both sides were touched in 30 of 44 release hours; with realistic news slippage every version lost and losses ran up to 1.8x to 2.5x the planned risk. Verdict: Blows accounts.Quiz passed
Practice task: Set a daily loss limit, a maximum number of trades and a rule for stopping after consecutive losses. Write them at the top of your plan.
Module 7 Journal and review
Scalping produces a lot of trades quickly, which makes it easy to measure, if you record them.
- Lesson · Beginner · 9 min readGold Trading Journal Templates: What to Record and How to ReviewQuiz passed
- Lesson · Beginner · 15 min readTrading Psychology for Gold: Fear, Greed, FOMO, Tilt and the Routines That Protect YouQuiz passed

Practise in the community
Reading teaches the ideas; feedback is what makes them stick. Inside the XAUUSD Global community, pods of 5 to 8 traders post a plan at the stand-up before the London session (06:30 UTC) and before New York (12:30 UTC), then review each other's trades in one format: screenshot, thesis, invalidation and outcome. Bring each module's practice task to your pod and ask traders on your level to check your markings and your sizing. How a trading pod works explains the routine.
The courses are free and stay free. The community is optional: the first month is free, then $19.99 a month, cancel any time.
Finish with the quizzes and certificate
Each of the 13 academy lessons in this course ends with a five-question quiz. Score 4 of 5 and the lesson ticks itself here and on the academy's learning path. Passed quizzes also count toward the free XAUUSD Foundations certificate, which unlocks when all 51 academy lessons are passed. It is a self-study certificate, not a regulated qualification, and it can't show trading results; your journal does that.

Frequently asked questions
Is scalping gold profitable?
It can be for a small number of traders with low costs, fast execution and strict discipline, but it is the hardest style to make pay. Our tests of simple 1, 5 and 15-minute rules on real gold data all lost money after costs. Treat scalping as something to prove on a demo with your own costs first.
What is the best time to scalp gold?
Usually the London open, the London and New York overlap and the hour after major US data, when gold moves most. The hour before the 5 pm New York rollover is the worst: little movement and wider spreads. Our volatility tool shows the average range by hour in your time zone.
What timeframe should I scalp gold on?
M1 and M5 for entries are common, with M15 or H1 for direction. The lower the timeframe, the larger the spread is compared with each target, which is why our M1 test was dominated by costs.
How much money do I need to scalp gold?
Enough to risk 1% or less per trade at your broker’s minimum lot with a stop wide enough to survive the spread. At 0.01 lot a $1 move is about $1, so a $3 stop risks about $3 plus costs. Small accounts can practise on a demo, but they cannot absorb many losing trades.
Do I need the beginner course first?
Yes, or equivalent experience. Scalping magnifies every basic mistake, from wrong lot sizes to moving stops, so you need sizing and order types to be automatic before you start.
Educational content only, not financial advice. Trading gold with leverage carries a high risk of loss.
