Best Time to Trade Gold in India: XAUUSD Sessions in IST

Gold trades almost 24 hours a day, but for traders in India the useful hours are surprisingly specific. Here's when gold moves most in IST, when to be careful, and how the clock changes in Europe and the US shift everything twice a year.

Why timing matters more for gold than you think

India doesn’t change its clocks, but London and New York do. That means the gold sessions you trade move by an hour twice a year in IST, and many traders get caught out. The times below are given for both the northern summer (roughly late March to late October) and winter.

The Gold Market Hours tool does all of this automatically in your own time zone.

Gold session timings in IST

Session Summer (IST) Winter (IST) What gold usually does
Asian (Tokyo, Singapore) 5:30 am – 12:30 pm 5:30 am – 1:30 pm Quieter; builds a range
London open 12:30 pm 1:30 pm First real move of the day; often a fake-out of the Asian range
US data window 6:00 pm 7:00 pm CPI, jobs, PPI, retail sales: big, fast moves
London–New York overlap 5:30 – 9:30 pm 6:30 – 10:30 pm Highest volume of the day
Fed decision days 11:30 pm 12:30 am Very volatile
Late US session after 10:00 pm after 11:00 pm Activity fades
Daily break ~2:30 am ~3:30 am Spreads widen; avoid

Times are approximate and can vary slightly by broker.

The three best windows for Indian traders

1. The London open (12:30 or 1:30 pm IST). Liquidity jumps as European banks and the London bullion market come in. Gold often pushes through one side of the Asian range first, sometimes as a stop run, before choosing its real direction. Read the London session guide for the common setups.

2. The US data window (6:00 or 7:00 pm IST). Most high-impact US releases land at 8:30 am New York time. These create the biggest intraday moves, but spreads widen and price can spike both ways in the first minutes. Check the news and calendar every morning.

3. The London–New York overlap (evening IST). This is usually the busiest, most liquid part of the day: a good window if you can only trade after work.

Times to be careful

  • The daily break (around 2:30–3:30 am IST): spreads blow out as brokers roll over positions.
  • Monday open: price can gap from Friday’s close.
  • The first minutes after US data or the Fed: many experienced traders simply wait.
  • Late Friday and holidays: thin liquidity can produce sudden spikes.

What about MCX gold?

MCX gold follows the international XAUUSD price converted at the USD/INR rate, plus duties. It trades from 9:00 am to about 11:30 pm IST (to about 11:55 pm in the northern winter). That’s why MCX gold often barely moves in the morning and makes most of its daily range in the evening, when London and New York are active. If you trade MCX, watch USD/INR as well as XAUUSD.

Pick one window and own it

Trying to trade every session is a fast way to burn out. Choose the window that fits your day, learn how gold behaves in it, and keep a trading journal of what works there.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to trade gold in India?

For most intraday traders, the London open (around 12:30–1:30 pm IST) and the London–New York overlap (roughly 5:30–9:30 pm IST in the northern summer, an hour later in winter) offer the most movement and liquidity. Major US data at 6:00 or 7:00 pm IST adds big moves but also big risk.

What time does the gold market open in India on Monday?

Spot gold (XAUUSD) usually reopens early Monday morning in India, around 3:30 am IST in the northern summer and 4:30 am IST in winter, depending on your broker. MCX gold opens at 9:00 am IST.

Why do gold session times change during the year?

India doesn’t use daylight saving, but the UK and US do. When their clocks change in March and October/November, the London and New York sessions shift by one hour in IST.
