How gold is priced in Nepal: FENEGOSIDA rates per tola

Nepal prices gold per tola; Radio Nepal, the state broadcaster, gives the tola as 11.66 grams. The Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers' Association (FENEGOSIDA), which is authorised to publish the reference gold price for the domestic market, publishes daily per-tola rates for fine gold, tejabi gold and silver, and shops across the country use them. Today the bare international price works out to about 230,005 NPR per tola of 24k gold.

A word on tejabi. The Kathmandu Post describes tejabi as 22-carat jewellery gold, about 92% pure, but FENEGOSIDA's published tejabi rate sits only slightly below the fine-gold rate (about 0.2% in 2026), far less than the 8% gap a 22-carat alloy would show. So do not read the tejabi rate as the value of the gold in a 22-carat piece; ask the shop how it prices jewellery.

Customs duty: 20% since the 2026 budget

Nepal imports its gold, and customs duty is built into the FENEGOSIDA rate. The FY 2026/27 budget, presented on 29 May 2026, doubled the duty from 10% to 20% (silver too); the duty had been cut from 20% to 10% in November 2024. On the first trading day after the budget the gold rate jumped, and FENEGOSIDA linked the rise to the duty change.

Imports through banks and a daily quota

Gold reaches Nepal through banks, under a daily import quota set by Nepal Rastra Bank, which raised it to 25 kg a day in October 2025. In 2017 the banks switched from importing 99.50% gold to 99.99% gold. Hallmarking: in 2014 the Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology approved an "NS mark" hallmark for gold and silver jewellery, voluntary at first; we could not confirm how it works today.

    The Indian rupee peg

The Nepalese rupee is fixed to the Indian rupee at 1.60 NPR per INR, a peg in place since 1993; Nepal Rastra Bank publishes the INR rate under the heading "Fixed by Nepal Rastra Bank". So the NPR moves against the US dollar exactly as the Indian rupee does, and Nepali gold prices follow the dollar gold price, the Indian rupee and Nepal's own import duty. Trading hours in Nepal time

The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 18:45–22:45 NPT. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Nepal is on UTC+5:45, one of the few time zones with a 45-minute offset, so the overlap falls in the evening. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.

How this NPR gold price is calculated

Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 150.62 NPR. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.

    1. Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
    2. Price per gram in NPR = $130.92 × 150.62 = 19,720 NPR (24k, pure gold).
    3. Price per tola = 19,720 × 11.6638 = 230,005 NPR.
    4. For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 22k = 0.9167, 18k = 0.75.

The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. What this price does not include

The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Nepal, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:

    • Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
    • Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
    • Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
    • Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
    • Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.

When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate today in Nepal?

At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 19,720 NPR per gram and 230,005 NPR per tola, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. Shops across Nepal use the FENEGOSIDA rate per tola, which already includes the 20% customs duty on imported gold.

What is the difference between 22k and 24k gold?

Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 22k is 91.67% gold (fineness 916); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 22k is worth 8.3% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. FENEGOSIDA publishes rates for fine (24-carat) gold and tejabi gold, the name used for 22-carat jewellery gold, and a voluntary ‘NS mark’ hallmark scheme was approved in 2014.

Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?

This page shows the international spot price converted into NPR, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds a 20% customs duty (already inside the FENEGOSIDA rate), a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.

Is it a good time to buy gold in Nepal?

We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the NPR exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.

What is the difference between fine gold and tejabi gold in Nepal?

Fine gold is 24-carat (also called hallmark gold). Tejabi is the name used for 22-carat jewellery gold, about 92% pure. FENEGOSIDA publishes a per-tola rate for each, but its tejabi rate is set only slightly below the fine-gold rate, so it is not a measure of the gold inside a 22-carat piece.

Why did gold prices in Nepal jump in May 2026?

Because the FY 2026/27 budget, presented on 29 May 2026, doubled the customs duty on gold imports from 10% to 20%. Nepal imports its gold, so FENEGOSIDA’s per-tola rate rose on the next trading day, and the association linked the rise to the duty change.
