How gold is priced in Tanzania

The Bank of Tanzania buys gold from miners and dealers at the London price of the day and pays within 24 hours, and its daily exchange-rate table includes a gold buying and selling rate. Small-scale miners sell at designated mineral and gem houses and buying stations. Today the bare international price works out to about 346,343 TZS per gram of 24k gold.

    The 20% domestic set-aside

Since 1 July 2024 (Government Notice 539C of 2024), authorised miners and licensed dealers must set aside at least 20% of their gold for sale inside Tanzania: to local refineries, smelters, jewellers, or the government through the Bank of Tanzania, which has the first right to buy. No export permit is issued to a miner or dealer who has not set the gold aside. The Mining Commission applied the rule to gold exporters from 1 October 2024, with the set-aside gold going to refineries in Dodoma and Mwanza.

    The Bank of Tanzania's gold

In a news release from around July 2026, the Bank of Tanzania said it had bought and stored about 28 tonnes of gold over 18 months, worth about US$3.68 billion, and had helped miners and dealers open more than 4,000 bank accounts. It says the aim is to strengthen the foreign-exchange reserves, support the shilling and support financial stability.

    Taxes and buying safely

VAT is 18% in mainland Tanzania (15% in Zanzibar). Imports of precious minerals for refining, or for sale at designated mineral and gem houses, are VAT-exempt. Other imports follow the East African Community tariff bands plus a 2% railway levy and a 1% inspection fee; we could not confirm the band for gold jewellery. Because licensed buyers pay close to the London price, raw gold offered far below the conversion on this page is a warning sign of fake or illegal gold, and exporting gold needs a permit.

What moves the shilling gold price

The shilling price of gold is the London price times USD/TZS. A weaker shilling raises the local price even when gold is flat in dollars; the central bank's gold buying is partly meant to support the shilling. See what moves gold prices.

Trading hours in East Africa Time

The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 16:00–20:00 EAT. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Tanzania is on EAT (UTC+3) all year, so the overlap falls in the late afternoon and evening. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.

How this TZS gold price is calculated

Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 2,645.43 TZS. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.

    1. Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
    2. Price per gram in TZS = $130.92 × 2,645.43 = 346,343 TZS (24k, pure gold).
    3. Price per 10 grams = 346,343 × 10 = 3,463,429 TZS.
    4. For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 22k = 0.9167, 18k = 0.75.

The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. If you want to do the maths yourself, our guide to converting the gold price per gram, tola and kilo walks through every step with worked examples.

What this price does not include

The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Tanzania, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:

    • Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
    • Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
    • Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
    • Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
    • Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.

When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate today in Tanzania?

At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 346,343 TZS per gram and 3,463,429 TZS per 10 grams, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. The Bank of Tanzania buys gold at the London price of the day and shows a daily gold buying and selling rate in its exchange-rate table; jewellers set their own retail prices.

What is the difference between 22k and 24k gold?

Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 22k is 91.67% gold (fineness 916); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 22k is worth 8.3% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. We found no national hallmarking rule for jewellery in Tanzania, so ask the dealer to test the piece and write the purity on the receipt.

Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?

This page shows the international spot price converted into TZS, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds 18% VAT where it applies, a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.

Is it a good time to buy gold in Tanzania?

We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the TZS exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.

Must Tanzanian miners sell gold to the central bank?

They must set gold aside for the local market. Since 1 July 2024 (GN 539C of 2024), miners and licensed dealers must keep at least 20% of their gold for sale inside Tanzania, to refineries, smelters, jewellers or the government through the Bank of Tanzania, which has the first right to buy. Without the set-aside, no export permit is issued.

What price does the Bank of Tanzania pay for gold?

The London gold price of the day, paid within 24 hours of the sale. The bank says it bought and stored about 28 tonnes over 18 months (to about mid-2026) to build reserves and support the shilling.
