Why other central banks matter for gold
Gold is priced in US dollars, so the Federal Reserve gets most of the attention. But the dollar is always quoted against other currencies: when the ECB, the Bank of England or the Bank of Japan surprises, the euro, pound or yen moves, the dollar index moves with it, and gold often follows within the hour. This page tracks ECB, BoE, BoC, RBA in one place, with every time converted to your own time zone. Across the 76 fixed-time decisions in our hourly data, the median decision-hour move in gold was $6.2, much smaller on average than a US CPI or jobs report hour (see the event centre).
How to read the gold tables
- Decision hour: the change in COMEX gold futures from the close of the hour before the announcement to the close of the hour that contains it. For an ECB decision at 14:15 Frankfurt time in winter (13:15 GMT), this is the 13:00–14:00 GMT bar.
- Next 4 hours: from the close of the decision hour to the close four hours later, which shows whether the first move held or reversed, often around the press conference.
- No data: a decision whose hour is missing from our data (for example a market holiday) is left out, never estimated.
Why there are no forecasts or consensus figures
Economists' expectations come from commercial surveys whose terms do not allow republishing, and we do not guess them. Each bank's own statement and the market's reaction are what matter; the history above shows how large those reactions have been, not which way the next one will go.
How traders use it
- Check the week. The "next 7 days" strip shows every decision coming up; combine it with US releases on the event centre and the economic calendar.
- Know your session. RBA decisions land in the Asian session, Bank of England and ECB decisions in the London session, the Bank of Canada in the New York session. See gold market hours.
- Size for the event. Use the ranges above with the position size calculator, and read how Bank of England decisions affect gold.
Method and sources
Meeting dates, announcement times and policy rates are taken from each central bank's own website and checked by hand (links and the last-checked date are under each bank). The Swiss National Bank, Bank of Japan, Reserve Bank of India and the PBoC's Loan Prime Rate are not shown: their websites' terms do not clearly allow commercial reuse or republishing of their data, so we link to them instead: SNB, BoJ meeting schedule, RBI. Gold prices are COMEX gold futures 1-hour bars from Yahoo Finance; futures trade a few dollars above spot XAUUSD but the moves are almost identical. Everything is recalculated on every site update.
Frequently asked questions
Which central banks does this page cover?
ECB, BoE, BoC, RBA. The US Federal Reserve is covered on the event centre and the Fed decision pages.
Are the times shown in my time zone?
Yes. Every decision time and countdown converts to the zone your device uses, daylight saving included, and you can pick another zone from the menu.
How much does gold usually move on an ECB or Bank of England decision?
Usually less than on a US CPI, jobs or Fed hour, but surprises can move the dollar and gold sharply. The tables show the actual moves for the recent decisions in our data.
Why are the Bank of Japan and the Swiss National Bank not listed?
Their websites’ terms allow reuse of their content only for non-commercial purposes, so we do not republish their schedules and rates. Their own websites have the official dates.
Does this page forecast rate decisions?
No. It shows official dates, current rates, past decisions and how gold reacted. There are no forecasts, consensus figures or trading signals.
Educational page only. Not financial advice and not a signal. Past price reactions do not predict future prices. See our risk disclaimer.
