How to Trade Gold in the UAE and Dubai: XAUUSD Regulators, Hours in GST and Safe First Steps

Dubai is one of the world's great gold cities, from the gold souk in Deira to the bullion vaults of DMCC. Trading XAUUSD from the UAE is common, but the country has three different financial regulators, and many brokers that target UAE residents are licensed by none of them. Here's how to tell the difference.

The short answer

Yes, UAE residents can trade spot gold (XAUUSD). It’s legal and widely available. The key is choosing a firm licensed by the right UAE regulator for the entity you actually sign up with.

Ways to get gold exposure in the UAE:

Product What it is Leverage Key point
CFDs on XAUUSD Contracts tracking the gold price Yes, set by regulator Check the firm’s UAE license
Exchange-traded gold contracts Gold futures on a regulated exchange such as DGCX Yes, exchange margin Standardized contracts
Gold ETFs and funds Listed products tracking gold No (unless on margin) Through a securities account
Physical gold Bars, coins and jewelry No Dubai is a major physical hub

Your regulators: three systems in one country

The UAE has an onshore regulator and two financial free zones with their own independent regulators.

Regulator Covers Official site
SCA (Securities and Commodities Authority) Onshore UAE securities and commodities firms sca.gov.ae
DFSA (Dubai Financial Services Authority) Firms in the DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre) dfsa.ae
FSRA (Financial Services Regulatory Authority) Firms in ADGM (Abu Dhabi Global Market) adgm.com/fsra

The Central Bank of the UAE supervises banks, and some banks offer gold accounts and products too.

A company being registered in a UAE free zone isn’t the same as being licensed to offer trading. Many companies have a trade license or an office in a free zone but no financial services license. What matters is the regulator’s register.

How to verify a broker

  1. Find the exact legal entity name and license number on the broker’s website and in the client agreement.
  2. Search the right register: - DFSA: the DFSA public register - FSRA: the ADGM FSRA public register on adgm.com - SCA: the licensed companies list on sca.gov.ae
  3. Check the license covers dealing in investments or the relevant activity, and whether it permits retail clients.
  4. Compare the website, email domain and phone numbers with the ones on the register.
  5. Check each regulator’s alerts or warnings pages for firms impersonating licensed companies.
  6. Confirm which entity will hold your money. Many global groups route Gulf clients to an offshore entity, even if they have a UAE-licensed company.

Leverage limits

Retail leverage limits for gold CFDs are set by the regulator and can differ between the SCA, DFSA and FSRA. We won’t quote a number here because rules differ and change. Check current limits with the regulator and in your broker’s terms.

A simple rule: if a firm offers 1:500 or 1:1000 leverage to a retail client in the UAE, ask which entity you’re dealing with. It’s often an offshore company outside UAE regulation.

Leverage doesn’t change how much a gold move costs you. On 1.00 lot, every $1 move is still $100. See the gold margin calculator to understand margin, and size by risk, not margin.

Dubai’s physical gold market

Dubai is one of the world’s leading centers for physical gold trading.

  • DMCC (Dubai Multi Commodities Centre) is a free zone and a major hub for gold, precious metals and commodities trading. It’s home to refiners, vaults and the UAE Good Delivery standard for gold bars.
  • The Dubai Gold Souk in Deira is one of the best-known gold markets in the world, popular with residents and tourists for jewelry, bars and coins.
  • The Dubai Gold & Commodities Exchange (DGCX) has listed gold contracts. Check its website for current products.
  • Gold jewelry and bars are a traditional store of value across the Gulf and among the UAE’s large South Asian communities, with demand often rising around weddings, Eid, Diwali and Dhanteras.

Physical gold prices in the souk are set from the international spot price plus making charges. The same global drivers covered in what moves gold prices move both.

A general note on tax

This is general information, not tax advice:

  • The UAE generally doesn’t levy personal income tax on individuals.
  • UAE corporate tax applies to businesses, which may matter if you trade through a company.
  • VAT applies in the UAE, with specific rules for investment-grade gold and for jewelry.
  • If you’re a citizen or tax resident of another country, that country may tax your trading profits. This is common for expatriates.

Tax rules change and depend on your status. Consult a licensed tax adviser in the UAE and, if relevant, in your home country.

Best gold trading hours in Gulf Standard Time

The UAE uses Gulf Standard Time (GST), UTC+4, with no daylight saving. But London and New York change their clocks, so gold’s sessions shift by one hour in Dubai twice a year.

  • Winter (from early November to mid-March): London on GMT, New York on EST.
  • Summer (from late March to late October): London on BST, New York on EDT.
Event GST winter GST summer
Weekly open Mon 03:00 Mon 02:00
Asian session ~04:00โ€“12:00 ~04:00โ€“11:00
London open (08:00 GMT winter / 07:00 GMT summer) 12:00 11:00
US data (8:30 am New York) 17:30 16:30
Londonโ€“New York overlap 17:00โ€“21:00 16:00โ€“20:00
LBMA gold price (PM) 19:00 18:00
Fed decision (2:00 pm New York) 23:00 22:00
Daily break 02:00โ€“03:00 01:00โ€“02:00
Weekly close Sat 02:00 Sat 01:00

Watch the mismatch weeks. From October 25 to November 1, 2026, London is on winter time but New York isn’t yet. The London open is at 12:00 GST, but US data is at 16:30 GST. A similar gap happens in March 2027, when the US changes first (March 14) and the UK follows (March 28).

UAE traders are well placed. The London open falls at midday and the US session runs through the evening, which suits many work schedules. Start with:

Position sizing in dirhams

The UAE dirham is pegged to the US dollar at about AED 3.6725 per $1. That makes conversion simple. Your broker’s conversion rate may differ slightly, and the numbers below are rounded examples.

The formula:

Lots = Risk in $ รท (Stop distance in $ ร— 100)

Example:

  • Account: AED 20,000
  • Risk per trade: 1% = AED 200
  • AED 200 รท 3.6725 = about $54
  • Stop distance: $6 of gold price
  • Lots = $54 รท ($6 ร— 100) = 0.09 lots
Account 1% risk In $ $6 stop $12 stop
AED 5,000 AED 50 ~$13.6 0.02 lots 0.01 lots
AED 20,000 AED 200 ~$54 0.09 lots 0.04 lots
AED 50,000 AED 500 ~$136 0.22 lots 0.11 lots

If your account is in a currency other than AED or USD, convert using your platform’s live rate.

Let the position size calculator do the maths, and read the pip value guide if your broker talks in pips.

CFDs, exchange contracts or physical gold?

Many UAE residents hold physical gold and trade XAUUSD at the same time. They do different jobs:

If you… Consider Why
Want to trade short-term moves, long or short CFDs Small sizes from 0.01 lots (1 oz)
Want standardized, exchange-cleared contracts Exchange-traded gold futures Transparent pricing; exchange margin rules
Want long-term savings in gold Physical gold or gold ETFs No leverage, no margin calls
Want to buy jewelry Souk or jeweler Making charges mean it’s not an efficient investment

Practical points:

  • Overnight costs. CFD positions held overnight usually incur swaps or, on swap-free accounts, admin fees. Check both before holding trades for days.
  • Physical spreads. The gap between the buy and sell price on bars and coins matters if you trade in and out often.
  • Don’t confuse the two. A trading account isn’t a savings account for gold. Leverage means losses can be fast.

Common mistakes UAE traders make

  • Choosing a broker by its Dubai office. An office address says nothing about which regulator, if any, licenses the entity you sign with.
  • Forgetting the clock change. UAE time doesn’t change, but gold’s sessions do. US data moves from 16:30 to 17:30 GST in November.
  • Overtrading the evening. The overlap runs to 21:00 GST in winter, followed by thinner trading and the Fed late at night.
  • Using maximum leverage because it’s offered. Size by risk, not by available margin.
  • Copying signal groups without knowing the provider’s stop size or pip definition. Read the pip value guide to avoid sizing errors.

Scams and red flags in the UAE

The UAE’s reputation as a financial center makes it a popular backdrop for scams. Watch for:

  • Unlicensed firms with a free zone trade license or a smart office address, but no SCA, DFSA or FSRA license.
  • Impersonation of licensed firms, using similar names or copied license numbers.
  • WhatsApp and Telegram signal groups promising daily gold profits, often linked to a single broker.
  • “Account managers” who call you, push you to deposit more and discourage withdrawals.
  • Extreme leverage offers for retail clients.
  • “Islamic accounts” marketed as risk-free or guaranteed. Swap-free doesn’t mean loss-free.
  • Fake prop firms with unclear payout rules. Compare them with our prop firm gold trading guide.
  • Withdrawal fees, “taxes” or “release charges” demanded before you can access your funds.

Trading gold with leverage carries a high risk of loss. Gold can move $20 to $50 or more in a single session on major news, and leverage magnifies every dollar of that. Only trade money you can afford to lose.

Islamic and swap-free accounts

Many brokers serving the Gulf offer swap-free accounts, which don’t charge or pay overnight interest. Some replace swaps with a fixed admin fee after a number of days. Whether a particular product is Sharia-compliant is a question for qualified scholars, and views differ. Read the terms and ask a scholar you trust.

Frequently asked questions

Is gold trading legal in the UAE?

Yes. UAE residents can trade gold through brokers licensed by the Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA), the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) in the DIFC, or the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) in ADGM. You can also buy physical gold or trade exchange-listed gold products. Always check the broker’s license on the regulator’s own register.

Which regulator should my UAE gold broker have?

It depends on where the firm operates. Onshore UAE firms are generally licensed by the SCA, firms in the Dubai International Financial Centre by the DFSA, and firms in Abu Dhabi Global Market by the FSRA. Check that the specific entity you are signing up with is licensed for dealing with retail clients.

What leverage is allowed for gold trading in the UAE?

Retail leverage limits are set by each regulator and can differ between the SCA, DFSA and FSRA. Check the current limits with the regulator and in your broker’s client agreement. Very high leverage offers often mean you are dealing with an offshore entity rather than a UAE-licensed one.

What time is the best time to trade gold in Dubai?

The London open (12:00 GST in winter, 11:00 GST in summer) and the Londonโ€“New York overlap (17:00โ€“21:00 GST in winter, 16:00โ€“20:00 in summer) are usually the most active. Major US data is released at 17:30 GST in winter and 16:30 GST in summer.

Do I pay tax on gold trading profits in the UAE?

The UAE generally does not levy personal income tax on individuals, but rules can change and your home country may still tax you if you are a citizen or tax resident elsewhere. VAT rules on physical gold also have specific conditions. Consult a licensed tax adviser about your situation.

Does the UAE change its clocks for daylight saving?

No. Gulf Standard Time is UTC+4 all year. But gold’s sessions are set by London and New York, which do change their clocks, so gold trading times in Dubai shift by one hour twice a year.

Are Islamic swap-free gold accounts halal?

Swap-free accounts remove overnight interest charges, but whether a specific product is Sharia-compliant is a question for qualified scholars. Some brokers replace swaps with admin fees. Read the account terms carefully and seek advice from a scholar you trust.
