Gold by the qian and the tael
Taiwan weighs gold in qian (錢, also written cian) of 3.75 grams, with ten qian making a Taiwanese tael of 37.5 grams, the units the Taiwan Futures Exchange uses in its gold contract. Today the bare international price works out to about 16,124 TWD per qian and 4,300 TWD per gram of 24k gold.
Gold passbooks
Many Taiwanese hold gold through a gold passbook at a bank. The state-owned Bank of Taiwan posts passbook selling and buying prices per gram in New Taiwan dollars; it says the quotes are for reference only, the confirmed price is the one set when a deal is made, and it may change prices and spreads when markets move sharply. After-hours passbook trading on its e-banking runs from 16:00 to 20:00 on banking days, and the bank publishes its daily closing passbook prices as yearly open-data files.
Business tax: gold exempt, labour taxed
Taiwan's business tax (its VAT) is normally 5%. But under article 8(1)(30) of the Business Tax Act, gold bars, blocks, sheets and coins, and pure gold jewellery and ornaments, are exempt. The seller must still issue a tax-exempt uniform invoice for the gold, and the labour (processing) fee is a taxable service that needs its own taxable invoice. Platinum is not exempt. The Ministry of Finance repeated this on 7 November 2025, with the example of a wedding set: a tax-exempt invoice for the pure gold, and a taxable one for the processing fee.
Where gold trades in Taiwan
The Taiwan Futures Exchange lists a New Taiwan dollar gold futures contract of one tael (37.5 g), quoted per qian. It is cash-settled, but holders can apply to deliver or receive physical gold registered with the Taipei Exchange, and it trades in a day session (08:45–16:15) and an after-hours session (17:25–05:00).
What moves the Taiwan dollar gold price
The local price is the dollar price of gold times USD/TWD: a stronger Taiwan dollar trims local gains and a weaker one adds to them. Passbook prices also move with the bank's spreads. See what moves gold prices.
Rules for gold traders in Taiwan
Check that any firm offering leveraged gold or forex products is licensed by Taiwan's Financial Supervisory Commission before you trade; the exchange-listed gold futures above are the regulated route.
Our country guides explain how to check a firm before you open an account.
Trading hours in Taiwan time
The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 21:00–01:00 Taiwan time. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Taiwan is on UTC+8 all year, so the overlap falls late in the evening, inside TAIFEX's after-hours session. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.
How this TWD gold price is calculated
Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 32.843 TWD. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.
- Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
- Price per gram in TWD = $130.92 × 32.843 = 4,300 TWD (24k, pure gold).
- Price per qian = 4,300 × 3.75 = 16,124 TWD.
- For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 18k = 0.75.
The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. If you want to do the maths yourself, our guide to converting the gold price per gram, tola and kilo walks through every step with worked examples.
What this price does not include
The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Taiwan, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:
- Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
- Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
- Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
- Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
- Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.
When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

Frequently asked questions
What is the gold rate today in Taiwan?
At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 4,300 TWD per gram and 16,124 TWD per qian, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. The Bank of Taiwan posts gold passbook buying and selling prices per gram in New Taiwan dollars, for reference; deals are confirmed at the price set when they are made.
What is the difference between 18k and 24k gold?
Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 18k is worth 25.0% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. Taiwan’s business-tax exemption covers pure gold jewellery and ornaments; the labour fee is taxed separately, and platinum is not exempt.
Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?
This page shows the international spot price converted into TWD, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds the labour fee and its tax, a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.
Is it a good time to buy gold in Taiwan?
We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the TWD exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.
How many grams is a qian of gold in Taiwan?
One qian is 3.75 grams, and ten qian make a Taiwanese tael of 37.5 grams, the units used in TAIFEX’s gold futures. Multiply the per-gram price on this page by 3.75 for one qian of 24k gold.
Is gold taxed in Taiwan?
Gold itself is not: under article 8(1)(30) of the Business Tax Act, gold bars, blocks, sheets, coins and pure gold jewellery and ornaments are exempt, on a tax-exempt invoice. The labour fee on jewellery is a taxable service on a separate invoice, and platinum is not exempt (Ministry of Finance, 7 November 2025).
