Can South Africans trade spot gold (XAUUSD)?
Yes. South African residents can trade gold legally. XAUUSD is the price of one ounce of gold in US dollars. New to the term? Read what XAUUSD is first.
There are several ways to get gold exposure:
| Product | What you own | Leverage | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold CFDs (XAUUSD) | A contract on the gold price | Yes, set by the provider within the rules | Short-term trading, long or short |
| JSE-listed gold ETFs and ETNs | Securities tracking the gold price, some backed by bullion | None, unless you borrow | Longer-term exposure in rand |
| JSE-listed gold mining shares | Company shares | None | Indirect exposure plus company risk |
| Exchange-traded derivatives | Listed contracts, where available on the JSE or abroad | Set by the exchange and broker | Experienced traders |
| Physical gold | Krugerrands, other coins and bars | None | Long-term holding, storage and insurance costs |
Most XAUUSD traders use contracts for difference (CFDs). You never own the metal; you trade the price change and can go long or short. JSE-listed gold products give exposure in rand on a local exchange without leverage. The list of products changes, so check the JSE website for what’s currently listed.
The regulator: FSCA
The Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) regulates the conduct of financial institutions in South Africa. Visit it at fsca.co.za.
Firms that give advice or act as intermediaries in financial products generally need to be authorized financial services providers (FSPs) under the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services (FAIS) Act. Each authorized FSP has an FSP number. Firms that issue over-the-counter derivatives such as CFDs may need further authorization under the Financial Markets Act. Ask the firm exactly which authorizations it holds, then check them.
How to verify a broker with the FSCA
- Ask for the firm’s full legal name and FSP number. A legitimate provider shows these clearly, usually in the website footer.
- Search for the firm on the FSCA website using its FSP search.
- Confirm the authorization is active, the legal name matches exactly, and the product categories cover what the firm is offering you, such as derivatives.
- Check that the website, phone numbers and email domain match the details on record. Clone firms often copy real FSP numbers.
- Search the FSCA’s warnings and press releases for the firm’s name. The FSCA regularly warns the public about unregistered entities.
- Find out which ombud handles complaints about the firm, and whether you’d have access to it as a client.
An FSP number on a website proves nothing until you’ve checked it yourself on the FSCA’s site. Scammers routinely paste real FSP numbers onto fake websites.
Questions to ask any provider before you deposit
- Which legal entity will hold my account, and which regulator supervises that entity?
- Is my money held in a segregated client account, separate from the company’s own funds?
- What are the spreads, commissions and overnight swap charges on XAUUSD?
- How long do withdrawals take, and are there any withdrawal fees?
- Do you offer negative balance protection, and at what level does a margin call or stop-out happen?
- How do I lodge a complaint, and which ombud can I escalate to?
Get the answers in writing. A provider that dodges these questions is telling you something.
Leverage and offshore providers
Leverage on CFDs from local providers is set by the provider within the applicable rules. Check current limits with the FSCA and in your provider’s documents rather than relying on a number from an advert.
Many South Africans are approached by offshore brokers offering very high leverage. Be careful:
- If a firm isn’t authorized by the FSCA, you have little local protection if it refuses a withdrawal or disappears.
- Exchange control rules administered through the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) and your bank apply to money sent offshore. Allowances and reporting requirements change, so check with your bank, resbank.co.za and a qualified adviser.
High leverage doesn’t change your risk per trade; your stop loss and position size do. With gold near $4,150, every $1 move on 1.00 lot (100 oz) is worth $100. Our margin calculator shows how leverage affects margin, and the risk management guide covers the rest.
Tax overview (general terms only)
Tax on gold trading in South Africa depends on your circumstances. In general terms:
- The South African Revenue Service (SARS) may treat profits as income (taxed at your marginal rate) if you trade frequently or with a profit-making intention, or as capital gains in other cases.
- Losses are treated according to the same classification.
- Trading in US dollars means exchange rate movements may affect your rand gains and losses.
- Tax-free savings accounts have their own rules about which products are allowed.
Keep records of every trade, swap, commission and deposit. A trading journal helps a lot. For general guidance see sars.gov.za, then consult a registered tax practitioner or licensed tax adviser about your situation.
Best gold trading hours in South Africa (SAST)
South Africa uses South African Standard Time (SAST, UTC+2) all year, with no daylight saving. But London and New York do change their clocks, so gold’s key times shift by one hour twice a year in SAST.
| Event | Northern winter (Nov to mid-March) | Northern summer (late March to October) |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly open | Mon 01:00 | Mon 00:00 |
| Asian session | 02:00โ11:00 | 01:00โ10:00 |
| London open | 10:00 (08:00 GMT) | 09:00 (07:00 GMT) |
| LondonโNY overlap | 15:00โ19:00 | 14:00โ18:00 |
| US data (8:30 am New York) | 15:30 | 14:30 |
| LBMA gold price (PM) | 17:00 | 16:00 |
| Fed decision (2:00 pm New York) | 21:00 | 20:00 |
| Daily break | 00:00โ01:00 | 23:00โ00:00 |
| Weekly close | Sat 00:00 (midnight Fri) | Fri 23:00 |
Mismatch weeks. The UK and US change clocks on different dates. In late October (for example, October 25 to November 1, 2026) and for about two weeks in March, the London open follows the left column while US data follows the right, or vice versa. The Gold Market Hours tool shows the exact times for any date.
Why SAST is a great time zone for gold
South Africa is in one of the best time zones for gold trading:
- The London open falls in your morning. It’s often gold’s first real move of the day. See the London session guide.
- US data and the overlap fall in your afternoon, the most active part of the day. See the New York session guide.
- The quieter Asian session happens overnight, so you don’t miss much while you sleep.
On big news days like the jobs report or a Fed decision, spreads can widen sharply. Plan ahead.
Gold in rand vs gold in dollars
South Africans have a twist that many traders elsewhere don’t: the price of gold in rand depends on two markets, not one. Gold is priced in US dollars, so:
Gold in rand = XAUUSD ร USD/ZAR
That creates three situations:
| What happens | XAUUSD | USD/ZAR | Gold in rand |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold rises, rand steady | Up | Flat | Up |
| Gold flat, rand weakens | Flat | Up | Up |
| Gold rises, rand strengthens | Up | Down | Can be flat or even down |
Why this matters for you:
- If you trade XAUUSD in a rand account, your result includes both the gold move and the currency move between when you open and close the trade.
- If you buy a JSE-listed gold product priced in rand, its price reflects gold in rand, not XAUUSD alone.
- If you hold Krugerrands or bars, the rand value of your gold depends heavily on the exchange rate.
Many global factors move both gold and the rand, including US interest rates and the dollar. Our guide to what moves gold prices explains the main drivers, and the live XAUUSD price page shows where gold is trading now.
Practical tip: keep your trading records in the currency of your account, and note the exchange rate on the day you deposit and withdraw. It makes it far easier to see whether your results come from trading skill or from the rand, and it helps at tax time.
Position sizing in rand
If your account is in ZAR, your XAUUSD profit and loss is calculated in USD and converted. Size every trade from your risk:
Lots = Risk in US$ รท (Stop distance in $ ร 100)
Worked example (hypothetical exchange rate):
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Account balance | R50,000 |
| Risk per trade (1%) | R500 |
| Hypothetical USD/ZAR rate | 18.00 (US$1 = R18.00) |
| Risk in US dollars | R500 รท 18 = US$27.78 |
| Stop distance | $5 on the gold price |
| Lots | 27.78 รท (5 ร 100) = 0.056, round down to 0.05 lots |
| Loss if stopped out | 5 oz ร $5 = US$25, about R450 |
The rand factor. The rand can move a lot. If it weakens, each US dollar of profit or loss is worth more rand; if it strengthens, less. Use the live rate on your platform when you size trades, or let the position size calculator do it. For small account examples see XAUUSD lot sizes for small accounts and gold pip value explained.
Leveraged gold trading carries a high risk of loss. Gold can move several dollars in seconds around US data, and an oversized position can wipe out an account quickly. Never trade money you need for rent, school fees or debt repayments.
Common scams and red flags in South Africa
The FSCA regularly warns the public about unregistered entities and investment scams. Watch out for:
- No FSP number, or an FSP number that belongs to a different firm.
- “Forex mentors” who show off cars and lifestyles on social media and push you to a specific broker or “investment package”.
- Account management schemes where someone trades your money for a share of “guaranteed” profits.
- Promised daily, weekly or monthly returns. No legitimate provider can guarantee profits.
- Pyramid-style referral rewards for bringing in friends and family.
- Pressure to pay “fees” or “taxes” before you can withdraw.
- Crypto-only deposits or payments into personal bank accounts.
- Requests for your trading login or remote access to your device.
If you’ve been scammed, contact your bank immediately and report it to the FSCA and the South African Police Service.

Frequently asked questions
Is gold trading legal in South Africa?
Yes. South African residents can legally trade gold through CFDs, JSE-listed gold-related products and physical coins such as Krugerrands. Firms that give advice or act as intermediaries in financial products generally need to be authorized by the FSCA, so check any provider on the FSCA’s register first.
Who regulates forex and gold brokers in South Africa?
The Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) regulates the conduct of financial institutions, including financial services providers (FSPs) that offer CFDs. Authorized FSPs have an FSP number you can check on the FSCA website.
How do I check if a broker is FSCA regulated?
Get the firm’s legal name and FSP number, then search for it on the FSCA website. Confirm the authorization is active, the categories cover the products offered, and the contact details match. Also check the FSCA’s warnings about unregistered entities.
What is the best time to trade gold in South Africa?
The London open is the first big window: 10:00 SAST during the northern winter and 09:00 SAST during the northern summer. US data then lands at 15:30 SAST in winter and 14:30 SAST in summer, during the busy London and New York overlap.
Do I pay tax on forex and gold trading in South Africa?
Generally, yes. SARS may treat trading profits as income or as capital gains depending on your circumstances, and the difference matters a lot. Declare your trading and consult a registered tax practitioner or licensed tax adviser.
Can I use an offshore broker from South Africa?
Some offshore brokers accept South Africans, but if a firm isn’t authorized by the FSCA you have little local protection. Sending money offshore is also subject to exchange control rules, so check with your bank and a qualified adviser.
How does the rand affect gold trading?
XAUUSD is priced in US dollars, so if your account is in rand, your profit and loss is converted at the current exchange rate. A weaker rand makes each US dollar of profit or loss worth more rand, and a stronger rand does the opposite.
