How to calculate gold pip value
Gold is priced in US dollars per troy ounce. So the only two things that decide your profit or loss are the price move and how many ounces you control.
- Ounces = lots × ounces per lot. At 100 oz per lot, 0.10 lot = 10 oz.
- Value of a $1 move = ounces. 10 oz gains or loses $10 for every $1.00 gold moves.
- Pip value = ounces × pip size. With a $0.10 pip, 10 oz × $0.10 = $1 per pip.
- Profit or loss = (exit − entry) × ounces for a buy, (entry − exit) × ounces for a sell, minus costs.
Example: buy 0.10 lot at $4,000.00, sell at $4,008.00. Move = $8.00 = 80 pips (with a $0.10 pip). 10 oz × $8 = $80 before costs. A $0.30 spread costs 10 × $0.30 = $3, so about $77 after spread.
Why "pips" confuse gold traders
Forex traders are used to a pip being the fourth decimal (0.0001). Gold has only two decimals, so brokers and educators label pips differently. The dollars never change, only the label. If your platform shows a "points" value, check whether 10 points = 1 pip.
- A $5 stop is 50 pips with a $0.10 pip, 500 points with a $0.01 pip, or 5 pips with a $1.00 pip.
- Gold often moves tens of dollars in a day. Check today's typical range on our gold volatility (ATR) page before you pick a stop.
- Size the trade from your risk first, with the position size calculator, then use this page to check the pip value.
Frequently asked questions
What is a pip in gold (XAUUSD)?
There is no single official pip size for gold. Most brokers quote XAUUSD with two decimals, and many platforms and educators call $0.10 one pip. Some call $0.01 a pip (a point), and some call a full $1.00 move a pip. This calculator lets you choose your broker’s definition.
How much is 1 pip on gold for 0.01 lot?
With a 100-ounce standard lot and a $0.10 pip, 0.01 lot = 1 ounce, so one pip is worth $0.10. With a $0.01 pip it is $0.01, and with a $1.00 pip it is $1.00. The dollar result of a price move is the same whatever you call a pip.
How much is 1 pip on gold for 1 standard lot?
For a 100-ounce lot: $10 per pip if a pip is $0.10, $1 if a pip is $0.01, and $100 if a pip is $1.00. In every case a $1.00 move in gold changes the value of 1 lot by $100.
Why do different websites give different pip values for gold?
Because they use different pip definitions and sometimes different contract sizes. The safest way is to think in dollars: profit or loss = price move × ounces. The ounces are lots × your broker’s contract size.
Does a pip calculator include spread and commission?
This one subtracts the spread you enter as a cost. It does not include commission, swaps (overnight financing) or slippage, which can make the real result different.
Is my account currency important?
XAUUSD profit and loss is calculated in US dollars. If your account is in another currency, your broker converts the result at its own rate.
