How gold is priced in New Zealand

New Zealand dealers price gold from the international price in New Zealand dollars. Today it works out to about 7,347 NZD per ounce and 236.22 NZD per gram of pure gold, before a premium. For tax, what matters is purity: Inland Revenue defines fine metal as gold with a fineness of not less than 99.5% (silver 99.9%, platinum 99%).

GST: fine metal exempt, jewellery 15%

The sale of fine metal by a dealer, or by anyone importing it, is an exempt supply for GST, so investment bars and coins of 99.5% or more carry no GST. Newly refined fine metal sold by the refiner to a dealer as an investment item is zero-rated, and exported fine metal is zero-rated too. Gold below 99.5%, including jewellery, is taxed like other goods at the standard 15% GST. That is why bars are priced close to the international price while jewellery costs much more.

Leverage rules: proposed, not yet confirmed

The Financial Markets Authority (FMA) licenses derivatives issuers. In June 2024 it noted that New Zealand had no leverage limits, and that some issuers set their own caps anywhere from 30:1 to 500:1. Its consultation that month proposed retail limits like Australia's and Europe's, including 20:1 on gold, plus stronger suitability checks; submissions closed on 7 August 2024. We could not confirm whether the limits have been made final.

    New Zealand's official gold

In a 2023 Official Information Act reply, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand said that about $14 million of gold was sold around 1989–1990. We could not confirm whether it holds any gold today.

What moves the kiwi gold price

The New Zealand-dollar price is the US-dollar price of gold times USD/NZD, so a weaker kiwi lifts the local price on its own and a stronger one trims it. This page shows both numbers. See what moves gold prices.

Rules for gold traders in New Zealand

Check that any provider of leveraged gold products holds a derivatives issuer licence from the FMA, and read its own leverage terms, because a final national cap was not confirmed when this page was written.

Trading hours in New Zealand time

The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 02:00–06:00 NZ time. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. New Zealand is on NZST (UTC+12), and NZDT (UTC+13) in summer, one of the first places to see the market open each week; the overlap falls in the middle of the night. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.

How this NZD gold price is calculated

Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 1.8043 NZD. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.

    1. Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
    2. Price per gram in NZD = $130.92 × 1.8043 = 236.22 NZD (24k, pure gold).
    3. Price per troy ounce = 236.22 × 31.1035 = 7,347.16 NZD.
    4. For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 18k = 0.75, 14k = 0.585, 9k = 0.375.

The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. What this price does not include

The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in New Zealand, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:

    • Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
    • GST (goods and services tax), where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
    • Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
    • Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
    • Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.

When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate today in New Zealand?

At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 236.22 NZD per gram and 7,347.16 NZD per troy ounce, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. New Zealand dealers price fine metal from the international price in NZ dollars, and gold of 99.5% or more carries no GST when a dealer sells it.

What is the difference between 18k and 24k gold?

Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750); 14k is 58.5% gold (fineness 585); 9k is 37.5% gold (fineness 375). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 18k is worth 25.0% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. For GST, only gold of at least 99.5% fineness counts as ‘fine metal’; jewellery and other lower-purity gold pay 15% GST.

Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?

This page shows the international spot price converted into NZD, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds 15% GST on jewellery, a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.

Is it a good time to buy gold in New Zealand?

We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the NZD exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.

Is there GST on gold in New Zealand?

Not on fine metal: gold of at least 99.5% fineness sold by a dealer or imported is an exempt supply (and a refiner’s first sale of newly refined fine metal to a dealer is zero-rated). Jewellery and other gold below 99.5% pay the standard 15% GST. The price on this page excludes GST.

Does New Zealand cap leverage on gold CFDs?

Not as of June 2024, when the FMA said there were no leverage limits and some issuers offered up to 500:1. Its consultation proposed a 20:1 limit on gold for retail clients, but we could not confirm that the limits are final, so check the provider’s licence and terms.
