How gold is priced in Egypt: 21-karat per gram

Egypt sells gold per gram by karat, and 21-karat is the most commonly traded purity, which is why most local prices are quoted for it. 18-karat is the other main jewellery karat. Today the bare international price works out to about 6,175 EGP per gram of 21k and 7,057 EGP per gram of 24k gold.

A popular savings item is the gold pound coin (geneih dahab), which weighs 8 grams of 21-karat gold, worth about 49,398 EGP in gold content today.

    Testing and stamping

In Egypt, gold must be officially tested and stamped before it is sold, a process overseen by the Assay and Weights Authority. Check for the stamp, and for the karat, before you buy.

14% VAT on the making charge only

Egypt's standard VAT rate is 14% (VAT Law No. 67 of 2016). For gold jewellery, the head of the gold traders' division explains that the 14% is charged only on the making charge (masna'eya), not on the value of the gold, and only on stamped pieces, under a protocol signed in April 2022 by the Egyptian Tax Authority and the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce.

The Tax Authority publishes average making charges per gram for 21k and 18k gold, used for tax accounting. From 1 July 2026 to the end of June 2027 they are 10% higher than before. They do not necessarily match what a shop charges, which depends on the design. When you sell, shops pay the gold value minus a deduction, without refunding the making charge.

The floating pound and the gold price

On 6 March 2024 the Central Bank of Egypt said it would let the market set the exchange rate, and raised interest rates by 6 percentage points at an unscheduled meeting. The pound fell to a record low of about 52 per dollar that afternoon. Since then a move in USD/EGP shows up in the local gold price straight away, even when gold in dollars is flat. Trading hours in Egypt time

The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 15:00–19:00 Egypt time. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. The time shown follows Egypt's own clock, including its summer-time change. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.

How this EGP gold price is calculated

Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 53.901 EGP. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.

    1. Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
    2. Price per gram in EGP = $130.92 × 53.901 = 7,057 EGP (24k, pure gold).
    3. Price per 10 grams = 7,057 × 10 = 70,568 EGP.
    4. For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 21k = 0.875, 18k = 0.75.

The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. If you want to do the maths yourself, our guide to converting the gold price per gram, tola and kilo walks through every step with worked examples.

What this price does not include

The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Egypt, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:

    • Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
    • Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
    • Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
    • Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
    • Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.

When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate today in Egypt?

At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 7,057 EGP per gram and 70,568 EGP per 10 grams, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. Egyptian shops quote gold per gram, mostly for 21-karat, and add a making charge with 14% VAT on it.

What is the difference between 21k and 24k gold?

Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 21k is 87.5% gold (fineness 875); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 21k is worth 12.5% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. In Egypt 21-karat is the most commonly traded purity, and gold must be tested and stamped under the Assay and Weights Authority before it is sold.

Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?

This page shows the international spot price converted into EGP, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds 14% VAT on the making charge, a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.

Is it a good time to buy gold in Egypt?

We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the EGP exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.

Why is 21-karat gold quoted most in Egypt?

Because 21-karat (87.5% gold) is the most commonly traded purity in Egypt, so most local prices are quoted for it, and the Tax Authority publishes its average making charges for 21k and 18k. A gram of 21k is worth 87.5% of the 24k gram price before the making charge and VAT.

Is VAT charged on the full price of gold in Egypt?

No. In Egypt the 14% VAT is charged only on the making charge (masna’eya) of stamped pieces, not on the value of the gold itself, under the 2022 protocol between the Tax Authority and the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce. This page shows only the gold value converted from the international price.
