Gold trading problems, solved
Stops hit without price touching them, spreads that jump at rollover, Monday gaps, missing symbols and MT5 errors: the 15 problems XAUUSD traders search for most, each answered in one line and explained in full, with real data where it helps.
Most gold trading problems are not bad luck or a broken platform. They come from a handful of mechanics that charts don't show: the gap between the bid and the ask, the daily break at 5:00 pm New York time, the weekend, contract sizes and margin, and how fast gold moves compared with currency pairs. Find your problem below, read the short answer, and open the full page for the fix.
Orders & stops
Why a stop, target or order didn't behave the way the chart suggested.
| Problem | Short answer |
|---|---|
| My stop-loss was hit but price didn't touch it | Charts show the bid; a short's stop triggers on the ask, which sits above it by the spread. |
| My order filled at a different price | Market and stop orders fill at the next available price; in news hours gold can jump several dollars between quotes. |
| How do I set a stop-loss and take-profit in MT5? | Enter them as prices in the order screen, or modify the position later; 'invalid stops' means too close or the wrong side. |
| Why did my gold trade close by itself? | SL or TP hit on the spread, a margin stop-out, an expiry, broker rules or an EA. The History tab shows which. |
Prices & spreads
Why the price you see isn't always the price you get.
| Problem | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Why is the buy price higher than the sell price? | You buy at the ask and sell at the bid; the gap is the spread, and each cent of it costs $1 per lot. |
| Why does the spread widen at rollover? | 5 pm New York is the thinnest moment of the day: the hour before it had a median range of $7.60, against $13.00 for an average hour. |
| Why is the price different on my broker and TradingView? | Different feeds, bid vs mid, spot vs futures and different candle times. Trade off your broker's own price. |
Platforms & symbols
Finding gold, setting up charts and fixing platform errors.
| Problem | Short answer |
|---|---|
| What is the gold symbol on MT4, MT5 and TradingView? | XAUUSD or GOLD, often with a suffix; on TradingView TVC:GOLD, COMEX:GC1! or your broker's own feed. |
| How do I add gold to MT4 or MT5? | Market Watch, then Symbols (Ctrl+U), search XAU, Show. Still missing? Check the suffix, server and account type. |
| How do I set up a gold chart on TradingView? | Your broker's feed, a matched time zone, session breaks, three timeframes and the levels our tests support. |
| What do MT5 errors like 'invalid volume' mean? | Wrong lot step, too little margin, market shut, wrong symbol or login, stops too close, or the price moved. |
Market hours & volatility
When gold trades, when it jumps, and why it moves so much.
| Problem | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Why can't I trade gold right now? | The weekend, the 5 to 6 pm New York daily break, a holiday or a clock change, or your symbol and login. |
| How big are gold's Monday gaps? | Median $4.70 over 109 weekends since June 2024, $15.80 in 2026 so far; the largest was $116.30 on 1 March 2026. |
| Why does gold have big wicks and spikes? | News, thin liquidity, stop runs and headlines; NFP and CPI hours had a median largest wick of $15.10. |
| Why does gold move so fast? | Its median daily range over the past year was 2.19% of the price, about five times EURUSD's 0.42%. |

The quietest hour is the riskiest for tight stops. On two years of hourly gold futures data, the hour before the 5 pm New York break had a median range of $7.60, against $13.00 for an average hour and $23.20 for the busiest hour (9 to 10 am New York). Price barely moves, but liquidity is thin and spreads widen.
Weekend gaps have grown. Across 109 normal weekends since June 2024 the median Monday gap was $4.70, but it was $15.80 in 2026 so far, and six weekends gapped $50 or more.
Gold is a fast market. Over the past year its median daily range was 2.19% of the price (about $96), against 0.42% for EURUSD. The same lot size carries roughly twenty times the daily swing.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most common gold trading problem?
Being stopped out by the spread rather than by price. MT4 and MT5 charts show the bid, but a short trade’s stop-loss is checked against the ask, which is higher. When the spread widens at the 5 pm New York rollover, the Sunday open or around news, stops close to price get hit even though the chart candle never reaches them.
Why does my gold trade behave differently from the chart?
Usually one of three reasons: the chart shows a different price type (bid instead of ask), a different feed (another broker, a spot index or futures), or different candle times. Your orders are always filled at your own broker’s bid and ask.
Where do the numbers on these pages come from?
From real market data: COMEX gold futures (GC=F) hourly bars from 30 October 2024 to 30 October 2026, weekend gaps measured from June 2024, and Yahoo Finance daily bars for gold and four major currency pairs. Worked examples with spreads, balances and lot sizes are illustrative and labelled as such.
Do these fixes work on every broker and platform?
The principles do. Menu names, symbol suffixes, stop-out levels, minimum stop distances and trading hours vary by broker and platform version, so always confirm the details in your symbol’s Specification and your account terms. We never name or recommend brokers.
Can I get help with a problem that isn't listed?
Yes. Inside the XAUUSD Global community traders share screenshots of errors, fills and charts and help each other work out what happened. The first month is free, then $19.99 a month.
