Chart Replay: call the move on real event days

10 real Fed, NFP and CPI days in hourly gold candles. Watch them print one by one, call up, down or flat at the key moments, and see how often the first move fades.

Scenario

Pick a real event day

Choose a scenario above, then press Start. Candles appear one at a time; at three moments you call the next move.

A game for learning, not a signal. Nothing here predicts prices or tells you to buy or sell. Past prices do not predict future prices.

How Chart Replay works

Chart Replay lets you relive real gold event days one hourly candle at a time and call the next move before you see it. Pick a Fed decision, a US jobs report (NFP) or a US CPI day. The chart starts six hours before the release; the candles then print one by one, and three times the replay stops and asks you: up, down or flat?

  1. The release candle. Can you call the first reaction to the numbers?
  2. The next candle. After the release candle has finished, does the move continue or snap back?
  3. The rest of the session. Where is gold by the 5 pm New York close (or, on Fed days, by the next morning in Asia)?

At the end you get your score, the real numbers and the pattern of the day computed from the candles: extended, partly faded, reversed or whipsaw, with the lesson that goes with it. Your best score per scenario is saved in this browser.

Where the candles come from

One-hour COMEX gold futures (GC=F) bars from Yahoo Finance, the same hourly data behind when gold moves the most. The release dates are rows of the per-release tables in our gold after Fed decisions, gold on NFP days and gold on CPI days studies. US releases come out at 8:30 am New York (12:30 GMT in US summer time, 13:30 in winter); Fed decisions at 2:00 pm New York.

The lesson behind the game

Across 25 NFP releases with hourly data, the first-hour move often did not survive to the close, and the same is true of many CPI days. That is why the FOMC, NFP and CPI day playbooks all start with the same rule: let the first candle finish. If you trade event days, size the position for a wider stop with the ATR stop-loss calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real gold charts?

Yes. Every candle is a real one-hour COMEX gold futures (GC=F) bar from Yahoo Finance, on a real release day taken from our FOMC, NFP and CPI studies. Nothing is simulated or smoothed, and times are shown in GMT.

How is a call scored?

Each call compares the close at the moment you answer with the close at the end of the question’s window. A move smaller than 0.15% of the price counts as flat; otherwise it is up or down. Three calls per scenario, one point each.

What does 'the first move faded' mean?

That the move made in the release candle was partly or fully given back later in the session. It is common on news days, which is why event-day playbooks say to let the first candle finish before acting.

Can I practise news trading with this?

You can practise reading the reaction, not trading it. Real news trading also involves spreads that widen, slippage and stops that fill far from their price; see our news straddle test before trying anything live.

Will you add more event days?

Yes. There are 10 scenarios now; new ones are added from the same hourly data after future releases, and only for releases that appear in our study tables.
