How to use an economic calendar for gold

Gold is priced in US dollars and competes with interest-paying assets, so anything that changes the outlook for US interest rates or the dollar moves it. That is why a handful of US releases dominate the calendar: the Fed decision, inflation (CPI and PCE) and the jobs report. A stronger-than-expected number usually lifts yields and the dollar and pushes gold down for a while; a weaker number does the opposite. The size of the move depends on the surprise, not the number.

  1. Know the date and time in your zone. The list above converts for you. Mark it in your journal the day before.
  2. Check what is expected. The consensus forecast is the number the market has already priced. Gold moves on the gap between the result and that forecast.
  3. Size for the volatility. See today's ATR and widen your stop or reduce your lot size with the lot size calculator.
  4. Decide your plan before the release. Stand aside, trade the retest after the spike, or hold with a wider stop. Our news-trading lesson compares them.
  5. Review the reaction afterwards. The trackers on this page show how gold moved on every CPI and NFP release so you can compare your expectation with what happened.

Daily context lives on the gold news page, where we explain what moved the price today, and the live price page shows the levels being watched.

Frequently asked questions

Which economic events move gold the most?

In most years the three biggest scheduled movers are the FOMC rate decision, the US CPI inflation report and the US jobs report (NFP). Gold reacts to the surprise against the forecast, not to the headline number itself, and the size of the move depends on how much the result changes expectations for interest rates.

What time are FOMC, CPI and NFP released?

FOMC statements come at 2:00 pm New York time with a press conference at 2:30 pm. CPI and the jobs report are released at 8:30 am New York time. This page converts every time to your clock automatically.

Should beginners trade gold during news?

Most experienced traders either stand aside for the first minutes or trade only the move that follows the initial spike, with a stop sized for the day’s volatility. Spreads widen and slippage is common. Our news-trading lesson covers the choices honestly.

Where does the calendar data come from?

Dates are taken from the Federal Reserve, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the central banks’ own published schedules, and checked each month. See our editorial policy for how we verify data.

Does this page give trading signals?

No. XAUUSD Global is an education site. We explain what each event is, when it happens and how gold has reacted before, so you can plan your own trades.
