    Fineness marks in Sweden

Under Sweden's law on trade in precious-metal articles (1999:779, in force since 1 January 2000), an article must be at least 375 parts per thousand (9 karat) to count as gold, and the stated fineness may be at most 5 thousandths too high. Gold articles offered for sale must carry two responsibility marks: a fineness mark and the maker's or importer's name mark (the name mark can be left out if the piece has an official control mark). Official control marking is voluntary.

Today the bare international price works out to about 40,275 SEK per ounce and 1,295 SEK per gram of pure gold.

VAT: investment gold exempt, jewellery 25%

Sweden's VAT Act (Mervärdesskattelag 2023:200) has a special scheme for investment gold in chapter 21: the supply, intra-EU acquisition and import of investment gold are exempt from VAT. It follows the EU rules, under which investment gold means bars of at least 995 fineness and qualifying gold coins of at least 900 fineness. Jewellery is not investment gold and pays the standard 25% VAT, which is why a gram of gold in a ring costs far more than a gram in a bar.

    The Riksbank

Sweden's central bank, the Riksbank, was founded in 1668 and describes itself as the world's oldest central bank. The krona price of gold is the dollar price times USD/SEK, so when the krona weakens the local price rises faster than the dollar price, and the reverse is also true. See what moves gold prices.

Rules for gold traders in Sweden

Sweden is an EU state, so the EU's 2018 baseline for retail CFDs applies: leverage of at most 20:1 on gold, a margin close-out at 50%, negative-balance protection and a standard risk warning. Those EU measures were temporary and national regulators have since adopted their own permanent rules, so check a firm's authorisation with Finansinspektionen.

Our country guides explain how to check a firm before you open an account.

Trading hours in Central European Time

The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 14:00–18:00 CET/CEST. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Sweden is on CET (UTC+1), and CEST (UTC+2) in summer, so the overlap falls in the afternoon. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.

How this SEK gold price is calculated

Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 9.8905 SEK. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.

    1. Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
    2. Price per gram in SEK = $130.92 × 9.8905 = 1,295 SEK (24k, pure gold).
    3. Price per troy ounce = 1,295 × 31.1035 = 40,275 SEK.
    4. For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 18k = 0.75, 14k = 0.585, 9k = 0.375.

The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. What this price does not include

The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Sweden, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:

    • Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
    • Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
    • Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
    • Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
    • Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.

When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate today in Sweden?

At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 1,295 SEK per gram and 40,275 SEK per troy ounce, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. Swedish dealers price investment gold from the international price in kronor, with no VAT on investment gold.

What is the difference between 18k and 24k gold?

Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750); 14k is 58.5% gold (fineness 585); 9k is 37.5% gold (fineness 375). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 18k is worth 25.0% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. Swedish law sets 375 thousandths (9 karat) as the minimum for an article to be sold as gold, and gold articles must carry a fineness mark and a name mark.

Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?

This page shows the international spot price converted into SEK, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds 25% VAT on jewellery, a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.

Is it a good time to buy gold in Sweden?

We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the SEK exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.

    Is gold VAT-free in Sweden?

Investment gold is: under chapter 21 of the VAT Act (2023:200), its supply, intra-EU acquisition and import are exempt, following the EU definition (bars of at least 995 fineness and qualifying coins of at least 900). Jewellery pays the standard 25% VAT.

What is the minimum purity for gold in Sweden?

375 parts per thousand (9 karat), under the law on trade in precious-metal articles (1999:779). Gold articles for sale must carry a fineness mark and a name mark, and the stated fineness may be at most 5 thousandths too high.
