One gold price, many local prices
Gold has a single international price, quoted in US dollars per troy ounce and known to traders as XAUUSD. Every local gold rate in the world starts from that number. A jeweller in Karachi, a bullion dealer in London and a bank in Jakarta all take the same dollar price, convert it into their own currency at the going exchange rate, and then add whatever their market adds on top. This page does the first two steps for eighteen currencies and stops there, so you can see the pure converted price before any local costs.
That makes it useful for two things. First, comparison: if a local rate is 3% above the figure here, you know the local costs amount to about 3%. Second, understanding what moved: when the price in your currency jumps, the table tells you whether gold itself rose in dollars or your currency fell against the dollar, because both show up here separately.
How the prices are calculated
- International price. We take the latest price of COMEX gold futures, the most liquid gold contract in the world, in US dollars per troy ounce. Futures track spot XAUUSD closely, usually within a few dollars, but are not identical to it.
- Exchange rate. We convert at a published mid-market rate for each currency, updated daily. The rate is shown in the table so you can check it or substitute your own.
- Weight. One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams. The gram price is the ounce price divided by 31.1035; 10 grams, the tola (11.6638 grams, used in India and South Asia) and the kilogram follow from it.
- Purity. The table shows 24k (pure) gold. For 22k multiply by 0.9167, for 21k by 0.875 and for 18k by 0.750. The country pages show each karat separately.
What the prices exclude
Everything a local market adds: import duty where gold is imported (India is the clearest case), sales tax, GST or VAT (India's 3% GST, the Gulf states' VAT, Japan's consumption tax, VAT on jewellery across Europe), dealer premiums on bars and coins, making charges on jewellery, and the local premium or discount that opens when physical demand runs ahead of or behind supply, as it often does in China and India. Where a country exempts investment gold from tax, as the UK, the EU, Singapore, Canada and Australia do for high-purity bars and coins, the local price of bullion sits closer to the figure here; jewellery is taxed almost everywhere.
How often the numbers update
The gold price and exchange rates are refreshed on the server several times a day, and each page re-checks the latest data when it loads in your browser, so the figures you see are usually minutes to a few hours old. COMEX gold trades almost 24 hours a day from Sunday evening to Friday evening New York time; outside those hours the price shown is the last close. Exchange rates update once a day. For a live chart, today's range and the levels traders are watching, use the XAUUSD price page; for the busiest hours in your time zone, the gold market hours tool.
Frequently asked questions
What is the gold price today?
At the last update the international gold price was about $4,010.0 per troy ounce, which is $128.92 per gram. The strip at the top of this page refreshes automatically. The table converts that price into 18 currencies at the latest mid-market exchange rates.
How do I convert the gold price from ounces to grams?
Divide the price per troy ounce by 31.1035. For 10 grams multiply the gram price by 10, for a tola by 11.6638 and for a kilogram by 1,000. For 22k gold multiply the result by 0.9167, for 21k by 0.875 and for 18k by 0.750. Our conversion guide has worked examples.
Why is the local gold rate higher than the price on this page?
Because this page shows the international spot price converted at the exchange rate, with nothing added. Local rates include import duty where the country imports gold, sales tax, GST or VAT, dealer premiums and, on jewellery, making charges. Each country page explains which of those apply there.
Which exchange rate is used?
A published mid-market rate from a public exchange-rate feed, updated daily and shown in the ‘1 USD =’ column. Banks, money changers and dealers use their own rates, which include a margin, so a local quote can differ by a percent or two from this conversion for that reason alone.
How often does this page update?
The gold price and the exchange rates are fetched several times a day on the server, and the page re-checks the latest data each time it loads in your browser. The gold price comes from COMEX gold futures, which trade almost around the clock from Sunday evening to Friday evening New York time and track spot XAUUSD closely.
Is this page a recommendation to buy or sell gold?
No. It is an educational reference that shows how the one international gold price translates into local prices. We do not give buy or sell advice, we do not name or recommend brokers or dealers, and nothing here is a quote. Read our risk disclaimer and talk to a licensed adviser about your own situation.
