    Gold as a financial asset

Brazilian law treats gold in two ways. Gold for the financial market or for exchange policy, traded with institutions of the National Financial System, is a financial asset (ouro ativo financeiro) from the moment it is mined, under Law 7,766 of 11 May 1989. Such gold pays only IOF, the tax on financial operations, at 1%, charged on its first acquisition by an authorised institution, which pays the tax. Gold sold as jewellery or as a commodity is taxed as ordinary goods. Today the bare international price works out to about 720.48 BRL per gram of pure gold.

    Tracing where gold comes from

Brazil has tightened the rules on proving where gold comes from. A 2013 law let buyers presume a seller's gold was legal on the seller's word; in April 2023 a Supreme Court justice suspended that presumption, and on 21 March 2025 the full court confirmed the decision unanimously, so Central Bank-authorised dealers must now check that the gold is legal. In 2023 the federal revenue service also created an electronic invoice for financial-asset gold (NF-e Ouro Ativo Financeiro), which authorised institutions issue for first acquisitions, domestic sales, imports and exports.

    Where gold trades in Brazil

B3, the São Paulo exchange, lists a gold futures contract, and on 21 October 2025 it launched a gold futures index that tracks it.

What moves the real gold price

The real price of gold is the dollar price times USD/BRL. A weaker real lifts the local gold price even on a flat day for gold, and a stronger real trims it. This page shows both numbers. See what moves gold prices.

Rules for gold traders in Brazil

Brazil's securities regulator, the CVM, says in its 2024 booklet on forex that no institution authorised in Brazil operates in the CFD market and no forex offer is registered with it. Only CVM-authorised institutions may publicly offer such products in Brazil, and CFDs offered by foreign brokers are outside Brazilian supervision.

    Trading hours in Brasília time

The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 10:00–14:00 Brasília time. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Brazil does not use summer time, so the overlap runs from mid-morning to early afternoon in Brasília. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.

How this BRL gold price is calculated

Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 5.5032 BRL. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.

    1. Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
    2. Price per gram in BRL = $130.92 × 5.5032 = 720.48 BRL (24k, pure gold).
    3. Price per 10 grams = 720.48 × 10 = 7,204.83 BRL.
    4. For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 18k = 0.75.

The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. If you want to do the maths yourself, our guide to converting the gold price per gram, tola and kilo walks through every step with worked examples.

What this price does not include

The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Brazil, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:

    • Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
    • Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
    • Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
    • Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
    • Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.

When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate today in Brazil?

At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 720.48 BRL per gram and 7,204.83 BRL per 10 grams, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. In Brazil, gold bought as a financial asset is traded through authorised institutions and pays only a 1% IOF, and B3 lists gold futures; jewellers set their own retail prices.

What is the difference between 18k and 24k gold?

Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 18k is worth 25.0% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. We found no official source on karat marking in Brazil, so check the stamp (750 means 18k) and keep a receipt that states the purity.

Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?

This page shows the international spot price converted into BRL, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds the ordinary taxes on jewellery sales, a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.

Is it a good time to buy gold in Brazil?

We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the BRL exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.

Is there tax when you buy investment gold in Brazil?

Gold traded as a financial asset through authorised institutions pays only IOF, at 1%, under Law 7,766 of 1989. The tax is charged on the first acquisition of the gold by an authorised institution, which pays it. Jewellery and commodity gold are taxed as ordinary goods.

Can I trade gold CFDs in Brazil?

Not through a Brazilian-authorised firm. The CVM’s 2024 forex booklet says no institution authorised in Brazil operates in the CFD market and no forex offer is registered with it, and that CFDs offered by foreign brokers are outside Brazilian supervision. B3 gold futures are the regulated exchange route.
