No compulsory hallmarking
Trinidad and Tobago has no mandatory hallmarking or assaying of gold jewellery. A 2016 survey by the University of Trinidad and Tobago and UWI St Augustine tested 16 pieces bought from local retailers: 13 had less gold than stated, and 9 were well below, 8 of them sold as 10k. The pieces were sold as 10k to 18k, mostly 10k. So ask for the karat and weight to be written on the receipt, and consider an independent test for an expensive piece.
Today the bare international price works out to about 885.79 TTD per gram of 24k gold and 369.38 TTD per gram of 10k.
VAT and a 30% duty on imported jewellery
VAT is charged at 12.5% (Board of Inland Revenue). Imported gold jewellery pays 30% customs duty, one of the few goods above the Caribbean common tariff's general 20% ceiling, plus 12.5% VAT worked out on the value including that duty. The copy of the VAT Act we could read lists no gold or jewellery among zero-rated or exempt items. Ask whether a price already includes VAT before you compare.
What moves the TT dollar gold price
There is no announced peg, but the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago has loosely targeted the exchange rate since 1997, selling US dollars to banks to keep it stable, so the local gold price follows the dollar price closely. The IMF noted in 2026 that those repeated dollar sales have lowered the country's foreign reserves. See what moves gold prices.

Trading hours in Atlantic Standard Time
The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 09:00–13:00 AST. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Trinidad and Tobago is on AST (UTC-4) all year, so the overlap falls in the morning and around midday. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.
How this TTD gold price is calculated
Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 6.7659 TTD. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.
- Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
- Price per gram in TTD = $130.92 × 6.7659 = 885.79 TTD (24k, pure gold).
- Price per 10 grams = 885.79 × 10 = 8,857.95 TTD.
- For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 22k = 0.9167, 18k = 0.75, 14k = 0.585, 10k = 0.417.
The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. What this price does not include
The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Trinidad and Tobago, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:
- Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
- Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
- Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
- Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
- Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.
When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

Frequently asked questions
What is the gold rate today in Trinidad and Tobago?
At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 885.79 TTD per gram and 8,857.95 TTD per 10 grams, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. We found no official daily gold rate in Trinidad and Tobago; jewellers set their own prices, which include 12.5% VAT and, on imported pieces, a 30% duty.
What is the difference between 22k and 24k gold?
Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 22k is 91.67% gold (fineness 916); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750); 14k is 58.5% gold (fineness 585); 10k is 41.7% gold (fineness 417). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 22k is worth 8.3% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. There is no compulsory hallmarking in Trinidad and Tobago, and a 2016 university survey found 13 of 16 pieces tested held less gold than stated, so ask for a test.
Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?
This page shows the international spot price converted into TTD, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds 12.5% VAT (and 30% duty on imported jewellery), a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.
Is it a good time to buy gold in Trinidad and Tobago?
We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the TTD exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.
Is gold jewellery hallmarked in Trinidad and Tobago?
No: there is no mandatory hallmarking or assaying. A 2016 university survey found that 13 of 16 pieces bought from local retailers held less gold than stated, mostly pieces sold as 10k. Ask for the karat and weight on the receipt and consider a test.
What duty is charged on imported gold jewellery?
30% customs duty, plus 12.5% VAT calculated on the value including the duty, according to the US government’s country guide and the Customs tariff. Jewellery is one of the few goods taxed above the Caribbean common tariff’s 20% ceiling.
