How to Trade Gold in Indonesia: XAUUSD Rules, Bappebti and OJK, Licensed Futures Brokers and Best Hours in WIB

Gold is a favourite in Indonesia, from physical bars to online trading accounts. Oversight of derivatives has been changing, with part of it moving from Bappebti to OJK in 2025. This guide explains who supervises what, how to check a broker, and when gold is busiest in Western Indonesia Time.

Can Indonesians trade spot gold (XAUUSD)?

XAUUSD is the price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars. If you’re new to it, read what XAUUSD is.

Yes, through licensed firms. Indonesia has a long-standing commodity futures framework supervised by Bappebti (the Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency), with trades running through licensed futures brokers connected to the country’s futures exchanges. In 2025, part of this landscape moved to the Financial Services Authority (OJK), so it’s important to check which regulator covers the product you’re offered.

Route What you own Who supervises it Notes
Gold contracts via licensed futures brokers Exchange-linked contracts on gold Bappebti; brokers connect to JFX or ICDX Leveraged; check the broker’s licence

The regulators after the 2025 transfer

Bappebti

Bappebti (bappebti.go.id) supervises commodity futures trading, which can include gold. Futures brokers (pialang berjangka) need a Bappebti licence, and a Chambers & Partners legal guide notes that commodity futures, which may include digital gold, can be traded on a platform as long as it’s run by a licensed futures broker connected to JFX and ICDX.

OJK

On 10 January 2025, under Government Regulation No. 49 of 2024, oversight of digital financial assets (including crypto) and financial derivatives moved from Bappebti to the Financial Services Authority (OJK) (ojk.go.id). OJK issued POJK No. 1 of 2025 on financial derivatives with underlying securities. Licences and product registrations issued earlier by Bappebti in these areas stay valid. Bappebti now concentrates on commodity futures.

Because the split is recent, always ask a firm which regulator licenses it and check that regulator’s list yourself.

How to check a firm

  1. Find the broker on Bappebti’s list of licensed futures brokers (or OJK’s list, depending on the product).
  2. Check that it’s a member of JFX or ICDX.
  3. Match the company name, website and address exactly.
  4. Be wary of “partners” or “introducers” who aren’t licensed themselves.

What this means for your day

Gold’s busiest hours fall in the Indonesian evening, which suits people who work days. Set a fixed stop time so you don’t trade tired late at night.

Position sizing in rupiah

Risk 1% or less of your account per trade.

Hypothetical example: an account of Rp 20 million (about $1,210 at 16,500 per dollar). 1% is about $12. With a $10 stop, that’s just over 1 ounce, so 0.01 lot. Gold’s average daily range was about $77 in October 2026, which is why tiny sizes matter on small accounts. Use our position size calculator.

Common scams and red flags in Indonesia

  • Unlicensed “robot trading” schemes promising fixed daily profits; Indonesian authorities have acted against several in recent years.
  • Account managers who trade your money and pressure you to deposit more.
  • Fake licence claims: a company registration or a foreign licence isn’t a Bappebti or OJK licence.
  • Withdrawal blocks until you pay a fee.
  • Recruitment rewards for bringing in friends.

If you suspect a scam, stop paying, keep records and report it to Bappebti, OJK and the police. Beware of “fund recovery” offers that charge upfront.

Getting started safely: a step-by-step checklist

  1. Learn the basics: what moves gold and risk management.
  2. Decide on your route: licensed futures broker, digital gold or physical gold.
  3. Check the firm with the right regulator and exchange.
  4. Practise on a demo account first.
  5. Start with the smallest size, always use a stop-loss and keep a journal.

Educational content only, not financial advice. Trading gold with leverage carries a high risk of loss. Regulation is changing; check Bappebti’s and OJK’s current rules before you trade.
