    Hallmarking in Israel

Israel has been a member of the international Hallmarking Convention since 2005. The competent authority is the Jewellery Division of the Ministry of Economy and Industry, and gold is assayed by the Precious Metals Section of the Standards Institution of Israel. The legal gold finenesses are 999, 916, 875, 750, 585 and 375, and Israel recognises the Convention's Common Control Mark.

Today the bare international price works out to about 418.04 ILS per gram of pure gold and 13,003 ILS per troy ounce.

18% VAT, including on investment gold

Israel raised its standard VAT from 17% to 18% on 1 January 2025. We found no VAT exemption for investment gold: according to Nefesh B'Nefesh, customs charge VAT on the gold and silver content of bars and coins brought into Israel, with 0% customs duty and 0% purchase tax. Jewellery adds workmanship and the shop's margin. None of these is included on this page.

    Diamonds, not gold

Israel is a centre of the diamond trade: the Israel Diamond Exchange in Ramat Gan runs rough and polished diamond trading halls and hosts the government's diamonds and jewellery administration. It is not a gold market.

What moves the shekel gold price

The shekel price of gold is the dollar price times USD/ILS, so a weaker shekel lifts the local gold price even when gold in dollars is flat, and a stronger one trims it. This page shows both numbers. See what moves gold prices.

Rules for gold traders in Israel

The Israel Securities Authority regulates trading platforms. In March 2016 it banned binary options outright, and in 2019 it announced a plan for leverage limits along European lines; we could not confirm the rules now in force, so check a firm's licence and terms.

Our country guides explain how to check a firm before you open an account.

    Trading hours in Israel time

The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 15:00–19:00 Israel time. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Israel is on IST (UTC+2), and IDT (UTC+3) in summer, so the overlap falls in the afternoon and early evening. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.

How this ILS gold price is calculated

Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 3.1931 ILS. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.

    1. Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
    2. Price per gram in ILS = $130.92 × 3.1931 = 418.04 ILS (24k, pure gold).
    3. Price per 10 grams = 418.04 × 10 = 4,180.44 ILS.
    4. For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 22k = 0.9167, 18k = 0.75, 14k = 0.585, 9k = 0.375.

The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. If you want to do the maths yourself, our guide to converting the gold price per gram, tola and kilo walks through every step with worked examples.

What this price does not include

The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Israel, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:

    • Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
    • Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
    • Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
    • Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
    • Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.

When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate today in Israel?

At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 418.04 ILS per gram and 4,180.44 ILS per 10 grams, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. We found no official daily gold rate in Israel; dealers price from the international price in shekels and add 18% VAT.

What is the difference between 22k and 24k gold?

Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 22k is 91.67% gold (fineness 916); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750); 14k is 58.5% gold (fineness 585); 9k is 37.5% gold (fineness 375). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 22k is worth 8.3% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. Israel’s legal gold finenesses are 999, 916, 875, 750, 585 and 375, and gold is assayed by the Standards Institution of Israel.

Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?

This page shows the international spot price converted into ILS, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds 18% VAT, a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.

Is it a good time to buy gold in Israel?

We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the ILS exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.

Is VAT charged on gold in Israel?

Israel’s standard VAT is 18% since 1 January 2025, and we found no exemption for investment gold: customs charge VAT on the gold content of imported bars and coins (with 0% duty and purchase tax), according to Nefesh B’Nefesh. The price on this page is the international price with no VAT or other costs added.

Who tests gold purity in Israel?

The Precious Metals Section of the Standards Institution of Israel, under the Ministry of Economy and Industry’s Jewellery Division. Israel’s legal gold finenesses are 999, 916, 875, 750, 585 and 375, and it has been a Hallmarking Convention member since 2005.
