Only 18-carat jewellery, with a customs hallmark

In Morocco, only 18-carat (750) gold jewellery may be sold. In a 2025 case reported by Hespress, a 21-carat piece shown on a live-stream sale led to a customs search and an investigation. Before it can be sold, each piece needs its "sales permit": the hallmark (poinçon) applied by the customs guarantee service, which shows the standard and lets the piece circulate legally. Since January 2024 traders record items on customs' digital BADR system before taking them to the hallmark office, replacing the old paper declaration. Customs reported a rise in fake hallmarks in 2025.

Gold is priced per gram in dirhams, following the international price. Today the bare international price works out to about 958 MAD per gram of 18k and 1,277 MAD per gram of 24k gold.

    Taxes and duties

Customs charge a hallmark (garantie) duty per gram on gold they inspect and authorise; we could not confirm today's rate from a current official source. Morocco's standard VAT rate is 20%, with a reduced rate of 10%; we could not confirm how VAT applies to retail jewellery. The making charge and the jeweller's margin come on top. None of these is included on this page.

    Where gold is sold

Gold is sold by jewellers in the old medinas and in modern shops, and increasingly through social-media sales, which customs now watches. Imports of industrial gold rose 51% from 2023 to 2024, to 0.9 billion dirhams, according to customs data.

A basket peg with a wide band

The dirham is not fixed to the dollar alone. Since 13 April 2015 Bank Al-Maghrib has set it against a basket of 60% euro and 40% US dollar (it was 80/20 before), and lets it move within a band around a central rate: widened to ±2.5% on 15 January 2018 and to ±5% on 9 March 2020. So USD/MAD moves when the euro moves against the dollar: a stronger euro firms the dirham and softens the dirham gold price. See what moves gold prices.

    Trading hours in Morocco time

The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 13:00–17:00 Morocco time. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. The time shown follows Morocco's own clock, which changes during Ramadan. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.

How this MAD gold price is calculated

Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 9.7545 MAD. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.

    1. Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
    2. Price per gram in MAD = $130.92 × 9.7545 = 1,277 MAD (24k, pure gold).
    3. Price per 10 grams = 1,277 × 10 = 12,771 MAD.
    4. For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 18k = 0.75.

The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. What this price does not include

The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Morocco, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:

    • Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
    • Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
    • Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
    • Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
    • Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.

When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate today in Morocco?

At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 1,277 MAD per gram and 12,771 MAD per 10 grams, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. Moroccan jewellers price 18-carat gold per gram from the international price; the customs hallmark duty and the making charge come on top.

What is the difference between 18k and 24k gold?

Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 18k is worth 25.0% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. Only 18-carat (750) gold jewellery may be sold in Morocco, and each piece needs the customs hallmark first.

Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?

This page shows the international spot price converted into MAD, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds the customs hallmark duty and VAT where it applies, a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.

Is it a good time to buy gold in Morocco?

We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the MAD exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.

Which gold purity can be sold in Morocco?

Only 18-carat (750) gold jewellery is authorised for sale, and each piece must first receive the customs guarantee service’s hallmark (poinçon), its ‘sales permit’. A gram of 18k is worth 75% of the 24k gram price on this page, before the making charge, duties and the shop’s margin.

Is the Moroccan dirham pegged to the euro?

To a basket: since 13 April 2015, 60% euro and 40% US dollar, with a fluctuation band of ±5% since 9 March 2020 (Bank Al-Maghrib). So the dirham moves partly with the euro against the dollar, which affects the dirham gold price.
