How gold is sold in Oman

Oman sells gold per gram in rials. We found no official body that publishes a national daily retail rate; shops price from the international rate. Today the bare international price is about 50.339 OMR per gram of 24k gold and 44.046 OMR for 21k.

Gold is controlled by the Law on the Control of Precious Metals (Royal Decree 109/2000), and hallmarking is done by the ministry's Directorate-General for Standards and Metrology. In January 2018 it reported hallmarking more than 2,928 kg of gold in the last quarter of 2017, and it urged buyers to look for the Arabic hallmark figures.

5% VAT on jewellery, 0% on investment gold

Oman's VAT Law (Royal Decree 121/2020) has applied since 16 April 2021, at 5% (article 36). Investment gold, silver and platinum are zero-rated, not exempt (article 51(3)); the Executive Regulations define them as metal of at least 99% purity that can be traded on world markets. Jewellery is not on the zero-rate list, so it pays the standard 5%. Most goods from outside the Gulf also pay 5% customs duty on their value. The making charge and the shop's margin come on top; this page includes none of them.

What moves the rial gold price

The rial gold price is the dollar price of gold times the USD/OMR exchange rate shown on this page. We could not re-check the Central Bank of Oman's peg on 7 November 2026, so watch that rate: when it does not move, the rial price follows the dollar gold price one for one. Rules for gold traders in Oman

The Financial Services Authority supervises the capital-market and insurance sectors. It publishes an Unauthorised Companies List and a form to report unauthorised firms, so check both before you trade.

Our country guides explain how to check a firm before you open an account.

Trading hours in Gulf Standard Time

The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 17:00–21:00 Gulf time. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Oman is on Gulf Standard Time (UTC+4) all year, the same as Dubai, so the overlap falls in the late afternoon and evening. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.

How this OMR gold price is calculated

Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 0.3845 OMR. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.

    1. Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
    2. Price per gram in OMR = $130.92 × 0.3845 = 50.34 OMR (24k, pure gold).
    3. Price per 10 grams = 50.34 × 10 = 503.39 OMR.
    4. For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 22k = 0.9167, 21k = 0.875, 18k = 0.75.

The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. If you want to do the maths yourself, our guide to converting the gold price per gram, tola and kilo walks through every step with worked examples.

What this price does not include

The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Oman, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:

    • Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
    • Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
    • Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
    • Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
    • Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.

When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate today in Oman?

At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 50.34 OMR per gram and 503.39 OMR per 10 grams, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. We found no official daily gold rate in Oman; shops price from the international rate and add 5% VAT on jewellery, a making charge and their margin.

What is the difference between 22k and 24k gold?

Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); 22k is 91.67% gold (fineness 916); 21k is 87.5% gold (fineness 875); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 22k is worth 8.3% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. Gold in Oman is hallmarked by the Directorate-General for Standards and Metrology under the 2000 precious-metals law, so look for the hallmark figures before you buy.

Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?

This page shows the international spot price converted into OMR, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds 5% VAT on jewellery (investment gold is zero-rated), a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.

Is it a good time to buy gold in Oman?

We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the OMR exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.

Is there VAT on gold in Oman?

Gold jewellery pays Oman’s 5% VAT, in force since 16 April 2021. Investment gold, silver and platinum are zero-rated under article 51(3) of the VAT Law: metal of at least 99% purity that can be traded on world markets. The making charge and the shop’s margin are added on top of the gold value.

    Who hallmarks gold in Oman?

The Ministry’s Directorate-General for Standards and Metrology, under the Law on the Control of Precious Metals (Royal Decree 109/2000). It urges buyers to check for the Arabic hallmark figures on a piece before they buy.
