The short answer
US CPI (the Consumer Price Index) is the main monthly measure of US inflation. It moves gold because it changes what traders expect the Federal Reserve to do with interest rates. A hotter-than-expected CPI usually lifts Treasury yields and the dollar and pushes gold lower in the short term; a cooler one often does the opposite.
The key word is expected. Gold reacts to the surprise, not the number. The next report, for October, lands on Tuesday, November 10, 2026 at 8:30 am New York time (13:30 UTC).
Why inflation data moves gold so much
Gold pays no interest. When rates and real yields (yields after inflation) rise, holding gold costs more in missed interest, and the dollar often strengthens too. Both weigh on XAUUSD. Inflation data changes rate expectations, so it hits gold through two channels at once:
- Rates: hot inflation raises the odds that the Fed keeps rates high or hikes.
- The dollar: higher expected US rates attract money into dollars, making gold more expensive in other currencies.
Over the long run, inflation can also support gold as a store of value. But on release day, the rate effect usually wins. You can follow both drivers on our real yields and dollar tool.
The surprise matters more than the number
Markets price in the consensus forecast before the release. What moves price is the gap:
| CPI result vs forecast | Likely first reaction in rates | Typical first reaction in gold (not guaranteed) |
|---|---|---|
| Much hotter | Hike odds jump, yields up | Sharp drop |
| Slightly hotter | Modest rise in yields | Small drop, may reverse |
| In line | Little change | Quick spike both ways, then back to the trend |
| Slightly cooler | Yields dip | Small rise |
| Much cooler | Hike odds fall, yields down | Sharp rally |
Watch four numbers: headline and core, each month on month and year on year. A headline beat with a soft core can produce a confusing, two-way reaction.
A real example: October 14, 2026
The September 2026 CPI report showed why this matters:
- Headline CPI rose to 3.7% year on year, up from 3.4% in August, against a forecast of 3.6%. On the month it rose about 0.6%, with energy a big driver.
- Core CPI came in at 2.6% year on year, also above forecasts.
- Market odds of a Fed hike at the October meeting jumped from roughly 22% to around 40% shortly after the release.
- Spot gold fell to about $4,086, its lowest since October 7, according to CNBC, as the dollar rose.
Then the story changed. Over the following days, an AI-led stock sell-off pushed money into bonds, yields eased, and gold recovered toward $4,160–4,175 by Friday. The CPI move was real, but it wasn’t the end of the story: that’s typical of data days.
Inflation and gold in 2026: the monthly picture
Our US CPI and gold tracker lines up each month’s CPI with gold’s monthly change (COMEX futures). A selection:
| Month | CPI y/y | Core y/y | Gold that month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sep 2026 | 3.7% | 2.6% | −6.58% |
| Aug 2026 | 3.4% | 2.5% | +9.12% |
| Jun 2026 | 3.5% | 2.6% | −12.07% |
| May 2026 | 4.2% | 2.9% | −0.79% |
| Mar 2026 | 3.3% | 2.6% | −11.44% |
| Feb 2026 | 2.4% | 2.5% | +10.60% |
There’s no neat monthly pattern, because gold also responds to the Fed, oil, geopolitics and positioning. What the table shows is that inflation re-accelerating in 2026 came alongside some of gold’s worst months, consistent with rates being the dominant driver this year.
A CPI-day routine for gold traders
The day before
- Find the release time in your zone on our news calendar. After the US clock change on November 1, 8:30 am New York is 13:30 UTC.
- Write down the forecasts for headline and core, month on month and year on year.
- Mark key levels: the previous day’s high and low, plus the current range. In mid-October 2026 that was roughly $4,100–4,200.
- Decide your plan: flat into the release, reduced size, or a setup only after the first move.
30 minutes before
- Check open positions. If you hold a trade, is the stop at a level you accept even if it fills with slippage?
- Expect spreads to widen just before and after 8:30.
- Don’t place tight pending orders right around the price; they can fill in the spike.
The release and the first 15 minutes
- Read, don’t react. Compare actual with forecast for all four numbers.
- Let the first spike settle. The initial move is often partly reversed as traders digest core vs headline.
- Watch yields and the dollar. If the 10-year yield and the dollar index keep moving in the same direction as the first reaction, the move has more support.
The rest of the session
- Look for structure. A clean break and retest of the pre-release range is more useful than the first candle. Our gold news trading strategy lesson covers setups in detail.
- Mind the next event. CPI is often followed by PPI, retail sales or Fed speakers. In the Fed blackout, there are no speakers to soften the data.
CPI minutes can bring slippage, wide spreads and fast reversals. A stop is not a guarantee in a spike. Many traders simply stay flat for the release. If you do trade, use smaller size and check the risk with the position size calculator.
Worked example: sizing for a CPI day
This is a hypothetical example.
- Account: $5,000; risk rule: 1% per trade = $50.
- Normal day: stop $10 away → 5 oz → 0.05 lot.
- CPI day: you expect bigger swings, so you widen the stop to $25 → $50 ÷ $25 = 2 oz → 0.02 lot.
The dollar risk stays the same; only the size shrinks to match the volatility. Our gold pip calculator shows what each move is worth at any lot size.
CPI vs the other big three
| Event | Usual time (New York) | Why it moves gold |
|---|---|---|
| CPI | 8:30 am, mid-month | Inflation → rate expectations |
| NFP (jobs) | 8:30 am, usually first Friday | Labour market and wages → rates (NFP guide) |
| FOMC decision | 2:00 pm, eight times a year | The rate decision itself (Fed day guide) |
| PCE inflation | 8:30 am, end of month | The Fed’s preferred inflation gauge |
Key takeaways
- CPI moves gold mainly through rate expectations, yields and the dollar.
- The surprise against the forecast matters more than the number itself; check headline and core.
- On October 14, 2026, a hotter CPI sent gold to about $4,086 before it recovered later in the week.
- Plan before the release, let the first spike settle, and size from a wider stop.

Frequently asked questions
How does CPI affect the gold price?
CPI changes what markets expect the Fed to do with interest rates. A hotter-than-expected reading tends to push Treasury yields and the dollar up and gold down in the short term, because higher rates make non-yielding gold less attractive. A cooler reading tends to do the opposite. Over long periods, persistent inflation is also one reason investors hold gold.
What time is US CPI released?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases CPI at 8:30 am New York time. The October 2026 CPI is due on Tuesday, November 10, 2026 at 13:30 UTC, which is 19:00 in India, 17:30 in Dubai and 21:30 in Singapore.
Why did gold fall after the September 2026 CPI?
Headline CPI rose to 3.7% year on year against expectations of 3.6%, and the monthly rise was large. Traders increased their bets on a Fed rate hike, the dollar rose, and spot gold fell to about $4,086, its lowest since October 7, according to CNBC.
Which matters more for gold, headline or core CPI?
Both, but many traders and the Fed focus on core CPI, which excludes food and energy, because it shows underlying inflation. In 2026, energy-driven headline inflation has also mattered because it fed directly into rate-hike expectations.
Should I trade gold during the CPI release?
Release minutes bring wide spreads, slippage and fast two-way moves. Many traders stay flat into the number or cut size, then trade only after the first move settles. Decide your approach before the release and size from your stop.
