How to Trade Gold in the Philippines: XAUUSD Rules, SEC Advisories, Legal Gold Options and Best Hours in PHT

Forex and gold CFD ads target Filipino investors every day, but the Philippine SEC has repeatedly said these platforms are not authorised to offer them locally. This guide explains what the SEC says, the legal ways to get gold exposure, and when gold is most active in Philippine time.

Can Filipinos trade spot gold (XAUUSD)?

XAUUSD is the price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars. New to it? Read what XAUUSD is.

The Philippines is one of the stricter countries on online forex and CFDs. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has said it does not allow the registration of forex in the nature of commodity or financial futures contracts and contracts for difference (CFDs), because the relevant rules remain suspended. It has told the public to stop investing in foreign-registered platforms offering commodity futures, CFDs, indices and binary options.

The SEC has also named specific platforms. In April 2024 it said one large offshore forex brand was not authorised to sell or offer securities to the public in the Philippines, and in December 2025 it issued similar warnings about two more, noting that they used social media and mobile apps to target Filipino investors and offered CFDs on commodities, among other products.

So most XAUUSD trading apps advertised to Filipinos are not authorised locally. If something goes wrong, you have little or no local protection.

Route What you own Allowed locally? Notes
Physical gold Bars, coins, grains, jewellery Yes Buy from reputable dealers and banks; check purity and buy-back terms
Gold mining shares on the PSE Company shares Yes, via licensed stockbrokers Indirect: miners can move differently from gold
Offshore forex and CFD platforms Contracts on the gold price The SEC has warned against them No local protection

The regulators

Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)

The SEC (sec.gov.ph) registers securities and licenses brokers, dealers and salesmen. It publishes advisories on entities that are not authorised, which you can search by name.

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP)

The BSP regulates banks and foreign exchange. It’s also a major buyer of locally mined gold, and has sold gold grains to the public in small packs at its offices in the past; check the BSP’s current programmes before relying on that.

How to check a firm

  1. Search the firm’s exact name on the SEC website, including its advisories.
  2. Check whether it is registered and licensed for the activity it offers, not just registered as a company.
  3. Be wary of influencers and “agents”: the SEC has warned that promoters of unregistered securities can face criminal liability under Section 28 of the Securities Regulation Code, with fines up to โ‚ฑ5 million, prison up to 21 years, or both.

Common scams and red flags in the Philippines

  • Promises of fixed daily or weekly profits.
  • “Mentors” and influencers pushing a specific app with a referral link.
  • Payments to personal e-wallet or bank accounts instead of the company.
  • Fake “SEC registered” claims: a company registration is not a licence to sell securities.
  • Pressure to deposit more to unlock withdrawals.

See our guide to Telegram signal red flags.

If you’ve been targeted, stop sending money, keep records and report it to the SEC. Be careful of “recovery” offers that ask for upfront fees.
