Gold by the baht-weight, 96.5% pure

Thailand has its own system. The standard purity is 96.5% gold, a little under 24k, and gold is sold by the baht-weight: 15.244 grams for bars (the weight the Thailand Futures Exchange uses in its gold contracts) and 15.16 grams for ornaments, the reference weights quoted with the association's prices. One baht of 96.5% bar gold therefore holds about 14.71 grams of pure gold. Today the bare international price works out to about 64,618 THB for one baht-weight of 96.5% bar gold.

The Gold Traders Association announces the domestic buying and selling prices for bars and ornaments, and its board charts them against spot gold and the baht; Thai news reports the association's prices every day. Members include bar manufacturers, and thousands of gold shops and goldsmiths operate across the country.

VAT: unworked gold exempt, ornaments taxed above the buy-back price

Thailand's VAT rate is 10% in law, currently cut to 7% until 30 September 2027. A VAT-registered trader who imports or sells gold not yet made into ornaments and at least 96.5% pure is exempt from VAT, provided it has told the Revenue Department and can show it is an importer or a member of a gold-trading association (Royal Decree No. 311). Gold imports and exports are VAT-exempt too.

Ornaments are taxed, but only on part of the price. The VAT base leaves out an amount equal to the association's announced buy-back price for ornaments on the day of sale, so VAT falls on the price above it, which is mostly the making charge and margin (Revenue Department VAT Notification No. 40, in force since 1 October 2001, for sellers that are VAT-registered and hold a second-hand goods licence).

    Where gold trades in Thailand

The Thailand Futures Exchange (TFEX) lists gold futures on 96.5% bullion in sizes of 10 baht and 50 baht, quoted in baht per baht-weight and settled in cash against the London price, with a day session and a night session from 18:50 to 03:00. It also lists gold contracts quoted in US dollars per ounce. Physical gold is centred on Yaowarat, Bangkok's Chinatown, with gold shops across the country.

    When Thais buy gold

Gold is a popular gift for newborns and weddings, and is bought both as an investment and as ornaments (Singapore Bullion Market Association). Habits are shifting with high prices: at Chinese New Year 2026, shops in one province told Thairath that buyers chose smaller pieces and many families now give cash in red envelopes instead of gold.

What moves the baht gold price

The baht price is the dollar price of gold times USD/THB, so a stronger baht trims local gains and a weaker baht adds to them. This page shows the dollar price and the exchange rate separately, so you can see which one moved. See what moves gold prices for the global side.

Rules for gold traders in Thailand

Thailand's Securities and Exchange Commission says it has no authority to supervise foreign exchange: under the currency law, foreign-currency deals must go through entities approved by the Finance Ministry, such as commercial banks and finance companies, and no one else has been given that right. The SEC has also warned that online operators offering CFDs, including on gold, are not licensed derivatives businesses in Thailand. TFEX gold futures and physical gold are the regulated routes.

Our guide to trading gold in Thailand covers the legal routes in more detail.

    Trading hours in Indochina Time

The international gold market trades almost around the clock, from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York. The busiest window, the London–New York overlap, falls today at about 20:00–00:00 ICT. That is when US data such as payrolls and inflation is released and the price usually moves most. Thailand is on ICT (UTC+7) all year, so the overlap falls in the evening, and TFEX's night session covers it. The gold market hours tool shows every session in your own time zone.

How this THB gold price is calculated

Three numbers decide everything on this page. First, the international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce: $4,072.1 at the last update. Second, the exchange rate: 1 USD = 33.552 THB. Third, the weight: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola is 11.6638 grams.

    1. Price per gram in USD = $4,072.1 ÷ 31.1035 = $130.92.
    2. Price per gram in THB = $130.92 × 33.552 = 4,393 THB (24k, pure gold).
    3. Price per baht-weight = 4,393 × 15.244 = 66,962 THB.
    4. For a lower purity, multiply by the fineness: 96.5% gold = 0.965, 18k = 0.75.

The gold price is the spot price of gold (XAUUSD) from a public real-time feed, refreshed every few seconds while the page is open; the 7-day table and the 30-session chart use COMEX gold futures closes, which usually sit a few dollars above spot. The exchange rate is a mid-market rate; the rate your bank or money changer gives you will be slightly different. If you want to do the maths yourself, our guide to converting the gold price per gram, tola and kilo walks through every step with worked examples.

What this price does not include

The figures above are the international spot price converted into local currency. They are the starting point for every retail price in Thailand, but they are not the price you will pay or receive at a shop. The shop price adds some or all of these on top:

    • Import duty or customs charges, where gold or jewellery is imported.
    • Sales tax or VAT, where the country charges one. Many countries tax jewellery but not investment bars; the sections above say what applies here.
    • Dealer premium: the margin a bullion dealer or bank adds to the spot price for bars and coins, usually larger on small pieces.
    • Making charges (labour) on jewellery, often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
    • Local supply and demand, which can push the physical price to a premium or a discount against the international price for weeks at a time.

When you sell, the buyer usually quotes below the spot-based number and deducts for purity testing, wear and sometimes stones. The gap between the buying and the selling price is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it varies a lot between shops, so it is worth asking several.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate today in Thailand?

At the last update, pure (24k) gold was about 4,393 THB per gram and 66,962 THB per baht-weight, based on the international price converted at the latest exchange rate. The numbers at the top of this page refresh automatically. Thai shops price from the Gold Traders Association’s announced prices, quoted per baht-weight for 96.5% bars and ornaments.

What is the difference between 96.5% gold and 24k gold?

Karat (k) measures purity in 24ths, and fineness in parts per thousand. 24k is pure gold (999 fineness or very close to it); Thai standard gold is 96.5% gold (fineness 965); 18k is 75% gold (fineness 750). The rest is other metals, such as copper or silver, which make the alloy harder. Because you pay for the gold content, a gram of 96.5% gold is worth 3.5% less than a gram of 24k before making charges. Thai bullion is 96.5% gold, the standard used in TFEX gold futures, and it is weighed by the baht of 15.244 grams.

Why is the price at my jeweller different from the price on this page?

This page shows the international spot price converted into THB, with nothing added. A jeweller’s price adds VAT on ornaments (unworked gold of at least 96.5% is VAT-exempt), a dealer premium, making charges on jewellery and the shop’s own margin. Shops may also change their board only a few times a day, so on fast-moving days it can lag the live price in either direction. How big the gap is depends on the taxes and duties explained on this page: ask the shop to show the gold rate, the making charge and the tax separately.

Is it a good time to buy gold in Thailand?

We cannot tell you that, and nobody can with certainty. The local price depends on two things that are both hard to forecast: the international gold price and the THB exchange rate. What you can do is compare today’s price with the 30-day chart and the 7-day table on this page, decide why you want gold (savings, a gift, a wedding, trading) and how long you plan to hold it, and avoid buying all at once if the timing worries you. This page is education, not financial advice.

How many grams is one baht of gold?

One baht-weight is 15.244 grams for gold bars and 15.16 grams for ornaments, and Thai gold is 96.5% pure. So one baht of bar gold contains about 14.71 grams of pure gold. The Gold Traders Association announces Thai gold prices per baht-weight.

Is there VAT on gold in Thailand?

Gold not yet made into ornaments, at least 96.5% pure, sold by a registered trader that meets the Revenue Department’s conditions, is VAT-exempt. Ornaments are taxed, but only on the price above the Gold Traders Association’s buy-back price for ornaments that day. The current VAT rate is 7%.
