What is NFP?
NFP (nonfarm payrolls) is the number of jobs the US economy added or lost last month, excluding farm workers. It’s part of the Employment Situation report from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, and it’s one of the most watched economic releases in the world.
For gold, NFP matters because it shapes what the Federal Reserve does next. In 2026 the Fed is raising rates (it hiked to 3.75–4.00% in September), so a strong jobs market strengthens the case for another hike, while a weak one weakens it.
Release times around the world
The report comes out at 8:30 am New York time. The next one, for October, is due on Friday, November 6, 2026, the first jobs report after the US clocks change.
| City | Time (from Nov 1, 2026) |
|---|---|
| New York | 8:30 am |
| London | 1:30 pm (13:30 GMT) |
| Dubai | 5:30 pm |
| Mumbai | 7:00 pm |
| Singapore / Hong Kong | 9:30 pm |
| Sydney | 12:30 am (Saturday) |
During the northern summer, the release is one hour earlier in GMT and in cities that don’t use daylight saving. The Gold Market Hours tool converts it to your time zone automatically.
Look beyond the headline
The headline jobs number gets all the attention, but three other parts of the report often decide the real move:
- Average hourly earnings. Wage growth feeds inflation. Hot wages with a soft headline can still hurt gold.
- The unemployment rate. A rising rate signals a cooling labour market, which usually supports gold.
- Revisions. The previous two months are revised every time. A big upward revision can cancel out a weak headline.
Always compare each number with the forecast, not with last month. The market reacts to the surprise.
Three common scenarios
| Scenario | What it means for the Fed | Typical gold reaction |
|---|---|---|
| Strong jobs + hot wages | More hikes likely; yields and dollar up | Gold falls, often sharply |
| Weak jobs + rising unemployment | Hikes less likely; cuts come back into view | Gold rises |
| Mixed (for example strong headline, soft wages) | Unclear | Spike both ways, then a slower move as traders digest the details |
These are tendencies, not rules. If gold has already moved a lot into the release, the reaction can be smaller or even reversed.
An NFP-day routine
The day before - Note the forecast for payrolls, unemployment and wages. - Mark key levels: the week’s high and low, the prior day’s high and low, and round numbers like $4,100 and $4,200. - Check what else is coming. In November 2026, the jobs report lands in the same week as the US midterm elections.
30 minutes before - Decide what to do with open trades: close, reduce or hold with a stop you can afford to see slip. - Write down your two plans: “If the data is hot, I watch X. If it’s weak, I watch Y.”
The first 5–15 minutes - Don’t chase the first candle. Spreads can widen many times over, and the first spike often reverses. - Watch the US 2-year yield and the dollar index alongside gold. If they all agree, the move is more likely to last.
After the dust settles - Look for price to break and hold beyond a level you marked, or to sweep it and reject. Our breakout and retest strategy and liquidity sweep guide explain both. - Trade smaller than usual. The same stop distance carries more risk on a volatile day.
Risk rules for NFP
- Size from your stop. If you need a $15 stop instead of $6, your lot size must shrink. On a 100 oz contract, 0.10 lots with a $15 stop risks $150. Use the position size calculator.
- Expect slippage. Stops can fill several dollars away from where you set them.
- Avoid tight stops just beyond obvious levels. That’s where stop runs happen.
- No trade is fine. Watching one NFP closely teaches more than gambling on it.

Frequently asked questions
What time is NFP released?
8:30 am New York time, usually on the first Friday of the month. From November 1, 2026 that is 13:30 GMT, 5:30 pm in Dubai, 7:00 pm in India, 9:30 pm in Singapore and 12:30 am Saturday in Sydney. The October 2026 report is due on Friday, November 6.
Does gold go up or down on a strong jobs report?
Usually down. Strong hiring and wage growth make further Fed rate hikes more likely, which lifts Treasury yields and the dollar. A weak report usually helps gold. But revisions, the unemployment rate and wages can change the reaction.
Should beginners trade NFP?
Many experienced traders avoid the first few minutes. Spreads widen, price can spike both ways and stops can fill far from where they were placed. Waiting 15–30 minutes for the market to settle, or sitting out entirely, is a sensible choice.
