How to Trade Gold in Kenya: XAUUSD Rules, CMA-Licensed Forex Brokers, Leverage and Best Hours in EAT

Kenya is one of the few African countries with a dedicated licensing regime for online forex brokers, and gold (XAUUSD) is one of the most traded instruments on those platforms. This guide explains what the Capital Markets Authority licenses, how to check a firm, and the best gold hours in East Africa Time.

Can Kenyans trade spot gold (XAUUSD)?

XAUUSD is the price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars. If you’re new to it, read what XAUUSD is first.

Yes. Kenya has a clear legal route. The Capital Markets (Online Foreign Exchange Trading) Regulations, 2017 (Legal Notice 226 of 2017, in force from 1 September 2017) gave the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) power to license online forex brokers. The first licence went to Execution Point Limited in 2018. Today, CMA-licensed brokers typically offer XAUUSD alongside currency pairs.

The CMA regulates brokers, not individual traders. So the most important thing you can do is make sure your provider is on the CMA’s list.

Route What you own Regulated in Kenya? Notes
XAUUSD with a CMA-licensed online forex broker A contract on the gold price Yes Leveraged; check the licence type and current status
Physical gold Bars, coins, jewellery Dealers vary Check purity, premiums and resale price
Offshore platforms not licensed by the CMA Contracts on the gold price No No local protection if things go wrong

The regulator: Capital Markets Authority (CMA)

The CMA (cma.or.ke) regulates Kenya’s capital markets. Under the 2017 regulations it issues three kinds of online forex licence:

  • Dealing online foreign exchange broker: the firm can take the other side of your trades (market maker).
  • Non-dealing online foreign exchange broker: the firm passes your orders to other liquidity providers.
  • Money manager: manages trading on behalf of clients.

The regulations also set capital requirements; Business Daily reported a minimum of Sh50 million for an online forex broker licence. The regulations were amended in 2023 (Legal Notice 160 of 2023), so check the current text on Kenya Law.

How to check a firm

  1. Open the CMA’s Licensees / Market Players page and find the online forex broker list.
  2. Match the exact company name and website to the licence.
  3. Check the licence type (dealing or non-dealing) and that it’s current.
  4. Be careful with “introducing brokers” and social media “mentors” who aren’t licensed themselves.

Leverage

Several Kenyan sources put the leverage limit for licensed online forex brokers at 1:400. Because the rules were amended in 2023, confirm the current figure with the CMA and your broker.

High leverage is not a benefit. On gold, 1:400 means a $100 account can open a position worth $40,000, about 0.1 lot at today’s prices. With gold’s average daily range around $77 in October 2026, an ordinary day could move that position by $770, many times the account. Read lot sizes for small accounts before you choose a position size.

What this means for your day

The busiest gold hours fall in the Kenyan afternoon. If you work office hours, a lunch-time plan plus pending orders, or an after-work review, fits well. See our guide to trading gold with a full-time job.

Position sizing in shillings

Risk a small, fixed share of your account on each trade: 1% or less is a common rule.

Hypothetical example: an account of KSh 50,000 (around $385 at 130 shillings per dollar). 1% is about $3.85. With a $5 stop, you can risk only about 0.77 ounces, which rounds down to 0.01 lot, and even that risks $5 (1.3%). Small accounts have very little room on gold, which is exactly why oversized positions blow up so many new traders. Our position size calculator does the maths.

Common scams and red flags in Kenya

  • “Account managers” who trade for you and ask for login details or M-Pesa transfers to personal numbers.
  • Guaranteed returns, like “10% a week”.
  • Platforms not on the CMA list, especially ones that only exist on Telegram, WhatsApp or Instagram.
  • Withdrawal blocks until you pay a “tax” or “verification fee”.
  • Recruitment bonuses for bringing in friends.

If something feels wrong, stop depositing, keep screenshots and transaction records, and report the firm to the CMA. Beware of “fund recovery” services that charge upfront fees.

Getting started safely: a step-by-step checklist

  1. Learn the basics: what moves gold, lot sizes and risk management.
  2. Shortlist only CMA-licensed brokers and check them on the CMA website.
  3. Practise on a demo account for at least a few weeks.
  4. Start with the smallest size and a stop-loss on every trade.
  5. Keep a journal and review it every week.

Educational content only, not financial advice. Trading gold with leverage carries a high risk of loss. Check the CMA’s current rules and licensee list before you trade.

Frequently asked questions

Is forex and gold trading legal in Kenya?

Yes, through licensed firms. Since the Capital Markets (Online Foreign Exchange Trading) Regulations, 2017, the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) licenses online forex brokers in Kenya. The CMA regulates the brokers, not individual traders, so the key step is checking that your provider holds a current CMA licence.

What licences does the CMA issue for online forex?

The regulations set out three licence types: dealing online foreign exchange broker, non-dealing online foreign exchange broker, and money manager. The CMA publishes its current licensees on its website under licensees and market players.

What is the maximum leverage in Kenya?

Several Kenyan sources report a leverage limit of 1:400 for CMA-licensed online forex brokers. The regulations were amended in 2023, so confirm the current limit with the CMA and your broker. High leverage doesn’t protect you; it only lets a small move do more damage.

What is the best time to trade gold in Kenya?

Kenya stays on East Africa Time (UTC+3) all year. The London open is 10:00 EAT during the northern summer and 11:00 in winter. Major US data lands at 15:30 EAT in summer and 16:30 in winter.

Can I fund a forex account with M-Pesa?

Some licensed brokers accept mobile money. Whatever the method, make sure you’re paying the licensed company itself, never an individual’s number or an ‘account manager’.

Do I pay tax on trading profits in Kenya?

It depends on your situation, including whether trading amounts to a business. Check guidance from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and a qualified tax adviser.
